To all whom 2'25 may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL SKELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improven'ients in Guards for Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved guard for heaters, and more particularly to a guard for detachably securing to the upper section or portion of what are commonly termed coal oil heaters.

The invention has for its principal objects to provide a guard which is capable of being detachably secured to the heater, enabling the same to be moved with the heater; one wherein a handle is provided in connection with the guard and through which the guard and heater are moved as 'a unit; one wherein the guard is attached in such man; ner to the heater that on the opening of the heater to fill the oil reservoir thereof it is not necessary to remove the guard but said opening and closing movement causes the movement of the guard with the upper or heating portion of the heater.

With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

To more fully comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a heater, partly in section, with the preferred embodiment of'my guard illustrated in section and attached thereto.

Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the guard removed from the heater.

Referring more particularly to the views of the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, the numeral 1 indicates a heater base adapted for containing a lamp or other heating medium, not shown, and to the upper edge of Specification of Letters Patent.

said base is hinged, as at 2, the lower end ofa suitable heating chamber 3 of the well known type, said chamber being provided at its lower edge with a flange 1 for resting on the upper peripheral surface of the wall of the member 1, and said heating chamber is maintained in a vertical position on said base 1 by a catch 5 passing through an opening 6 in the flange 1.

My improved guard is preferably circular in cross section and comprises a circular side wall 7 closed at its top by a suitable flat top wall 8, the outer edge of said wall 8 and wall 7 being reinforced by a member 9. The walls 7 and S are formed of any suitable mesh material, preferably heavy mesh wire, to insure rigidity of the guard and to enable the same to withstand any blows or jars imparted to the same. The member 7 is of a diameter slightly larger than that of the heating chamber 3 to insure the spacing of the wall 7 from the wall of the chamber 3, and is also of a height to enable the top wall 8 to lie in spaced relation above the top of the chamber 3 when the guard is properly positioned on the heater.

The preferred means for detachably securing the guard to the upper hinged chamher 3 of the heater, comprises an annular reinforcing member 10 provided at intervals with parallel downwardly inclined portions 11 terminating at their lower ends in an inwardly projecting hook 12, said hooks being preferably four in'number and arranged circumferentially of the lower edge of the guard and are adapted to yieldably engage the peripheral surface of the flange 1.

It is apparent that by attaching the guard 7 to the flange a, as above set forth, the catch 5 is readily accessible to permit the swing-- ing of the heating chamber 3 of the heater on the base 1 when it is desired to open the heater to permit access to be had to the lamp thereof.

My improved guard is provided adjacent its upper end at opposite sides with suitable bail receiving members 13 of any suitable construction and attached in any suitable manner to the wall 7, and said bail receiving portions are each preferably formed with an opening 14: for receiving the hooked end 15 of a bail 16, preferably formed with a wire handle engaging portion 1.7.

The bail employed is preferably the same one which has been removed from the heater when the guard was inserted thereon, and is slightly spread to permit the securing of the same to the guard.

My improved guard, constructed as above described, is capable of attachment to a heater without in any manner altering the heater other than removing the bail therefrom, and is of such construction as to readily protect the heater and prevent the contact therewith of curtains and the like, and also to prevent children from becoming burned by contacting directly with the surface of the heating chamber 8.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a heater having a base for receiving a heat producing element, and an upper section provided with a flange hinged to the base and adapted to be moved relative thereto to permit access to be had to the interior of the base, of a guard handle connected with the guard for the purpose described.

2. The combination with a heater having a base section adapted to receive a heat producing means, an upper section hinged thereto provided at its lower end with an annular outwardly projecting flange, of a guard for the upper section of the heater comprising a cylindrical body 01": open mesh material closed at its upper end for positioning over the upper section of the heater to inclose the same with its walls in spaced relation to the upper heater section, the lower edge of the guard terminating above the annular flange of the upper section and spaced therefrom, said guard being provided with inwardly and downwardly projecting spring members for engaging the annular flange and fashioned to cooperate therewith and maintain the guard in position against vertical and horizontal movements relative to the upper section, but permitting the upper section and its guard to swing as a unit relative to the base, and a bail pivotally connected with the guard whereby the guard and heater may be bodily lifted by the bail.
