Description
M. M. GELLEN-BECK.
GARMENT.
APPLIICATION FILED MAR.\3I, 1919.
( lvnwmtoz M/mv A4. GELLE/YBECK,
Que-nun I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MABYML. GnLLnnB'EoKQoF :rAcoMA, WASHINGTON,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY M. GELLEN- BECK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Tacoma, county of Pierce, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to new. and useful improvements .in. garment construction, and the obj ectof this. improvement is to provide means for reinforcingthe seam-of the gar ment under the arm to overcome ripping and tearin thereof, and to preclude the fabric of the outer portion'of the garment from being worn. out by the stays of-the corset asformerly:
The invention .conslsts in the arrangement construction and combination of parts as will be more fully described in the following specification illustrated in the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the present invention; a part of the waist portion being broken away to illustrate the relation of the reinforcing member to the sleeve and side of the garment.
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of the same. j
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the reinforced seam.
Fig. l is a plan view of reinforcing sleeve. Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 1 designates the upper portion of a garment which is joined to a lower, or skirt portion by a suitable waist band 3.
The present invention seeks to provide a construction which will be more effectit e than anything heretofore used to preclude the seam of the garment from tearing under the arm, as it is at this place most garments are worn out. Especially is this a fact with garments worn by ladies with tendency toward stoutness.
In overcoming this difliculty I have provided the sleeves 9 of the garment with reinforcing sleeves 5, comprising single strips of material as shown in Fig. 4:, which are made to fit within the outer sleeves and extend from the ends thereof up over the shoulders itl'lCl'thQIlCG downwardly and connect with the waist band'at the sides of the front and back. i
v Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb 24, ,192() I Application filed March. 31, 1919. Serial No. 286,440.
The adjacent edges of the sleeve reinforcing strips and als o the edges of the fabric forming the garment sleeves and waist are all secured together by a seam 2 in what is'known as a French seam, and the same eX- tends from the end of the under side of the sleeve up under the arm and down the side i of the garmentto the waist band.
Particular attention is called to the construction of the seam; thisis made by placingthe edges. of both the reinforcing memher .and outer garment which are to be joined, together with the outside of the fabric facingout and placing a row of stitching as at 10 adjacent the edge to fasten all the edges together, then turning the matched portions of the fabric back onopposite sides of the stitching, as at 11, and again stitch ing through all parts with parallel rows of stitching 12 and 13 between which is placed a strip of taped, which extends from the outer end of the sleeve and connects with the waist bandat 8. This provision doubly reinforces the seam so that when the arm is closely than the outer so as to afford circu-' lation between the members and to preclude the stays of the corset from piercing thefabric'of the outer garment.
lifted the strain will-be directly applied 'to' Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: r
.1. In a garment of the character described, a relnforclng member conslsting of a s ngle strlp disposed within the garment reinforced thereby, and secured at its ends to the waist band of the garment at the side of the front and back; the strip extending over the shoulder, and having a sleeve forming portion extending within the garment sleeve and a seam securing the adjacent edges of the strip.
2. In a garment of the character described, a reinforcing member comprising a single strip applied interiorly of the garment to extend over the shoulder and having its opposite ends secured to the waist band of the garment at the side of the front and back and having a sleeve forming portion extending within the garment sleeve; the adjacent edges of the reinforcing strip being secured within the seam which likewise secures partsof the garment to which it is applied. 3. In a garment of the character described, a reinforcing member comprising a single strip applied interiorly of the gafment' to extend :overthe shoulder and having its opposite ends securedLto, the waistband of the garment at the side of the'front and back, and, having, a; sleeve forminggzportion extending -.-.vvithin the garment sleeve; the adj acent edges, of the rein-forcin ,member tandem-responding edges of the lront and baek parts of the outer garment all being secured together b a seam tomprlising spaced. nowsof stitc ing and a reinforcing strip located ithin the. seam, extending frqnithe; end of the sleeve teth waist-band ofthegarment.
4 A. garment waist: :havingan outer. and a short inner sleeve, said inner sleeve having wings ,extendingffrom; its, shoulder. section -.downw;ardly to. the waistline, theouter end of theinnen'sleeve being stitchedwto the outen'sleeve, the. meeting edgeszof the inner sleeve and ,of its downwardly extending Wings 5 being stitched together vand to .the
outer-sleeve and waist b a seam which en tends along the :under sic e of the sleeve and then-down to'the waist.
,5. A garment waist having an outer and a short inner sleeve, sald lnner sleeve having wings extending from its shoulder sec-' --tio.n downwardly to the waist line; the outer end ofithe inner leeve being stitched to the outer sleeve, the meeti'ng edges of the sinner sleeve" and of its ndQWnwardly, extendlng.
wlngs. being -"stitched together i and to the outeit sleevezandwaisthyaseam'which exiten dsalfing thennder-s de of the sleeve and 1 then, :ClO I o the WalSt and a; reinforcing apestitched.intosaideseam- 1 6. A garmentwaist ,having an outer: and a short ,inner sleeve, the inner sleeve hav ng mgs extend ngfi owiiwarclio. the waistlin and stitched to the waistbody vin. such, manner, to, snpport the waist, .body and: leave the shoulder, .part ,of the waist and outer sleevev loose ,over, the shoulder, the outer, end
, 0 the inner sleeve bein tit hed t l the .outer sleeve.
