To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. Cosenovn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lWledford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Heel-Building .Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This inventionv relates to heel building machines and has particular reference to means for controlling the application of pressure to, and the driving of heel building nails through, the pile of assembled heel lifts which is to constitute a heel blank.
In machines of the general type to which this invention is applicable, a contractile heel form is provided. lVhile the form is expanded, a series of lifts sufiicient for a heel blank is piled into the form, which is then contracted to engage the lateral surface of the heel, aline the lifts properly and maintain them in alinement while the blank is subjected to pressure and a nail driven through it to secure the lifts together. A typical example of this style of heel build ing machine is illustrated and described in Patent No. 1,056,720, granted March 18, 1913, upon the application of Eliphalet A. Tripp.
In machines of the type referred to, the mechanism for contracting the form jaws upon thelateral surface of the heel is operated independently of the pressure and nailing mechanism, and it has been possible to apply pressure to the pile of lifts and to drive one or more nails through them while the form jaws were open, or out of engagement with the heel. This often resulted in causing the lifts to slide one upon another with the consequent distortion of the heel and was particularly troublesome in the case of heels including one or more pieced lifts, where the pieces were likely to become separated.
The main object of the present invention is to overcome the difficulties above outlined, and to this end a primary feature of the invention consists in the provision, in a heel building machine having a contractile heel form and mechanism for performing an operation upon the heel, of lockout mean" Patented Feb. 24, 1920.

for preventing operation of said mechanism when the form is not contracted. This means may conveniently take the form of a stop lying in the path of movement of an element of the operating mechanism, or the devices which control it, the stop being connected with the contractile heel form in such a manner that when the form is closed upon a heel, the stop is withdrawn from the said path of movement, and the operation of the machine upon the heel is permitted.
A further feature of the invention consists in the provision of means for preventing expansion of the form, with a consequent release of the heel from lateral confinement, before the operation of the machine upon a heel is completed. In a practical embodiment of the invention, this feature may be combined with the feature previously referred to in such a way that the starting of the machine when the form is not contracted upon the heel is prevented, and the expansion of the form during the operation of the machine upon the heel is made impossible.
These and other features of the invention will best be appreciated and understood from the following detailed description of one embodiment thereof, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the in vention applied to a well known form of heel building machine;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1;
Fig.3 is an exploded view of certain details of the controlling mechanism; and
Fig. 4 is a view of the organized machine, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section.
The invention will be described as embodied in a machine constructed like that shown in Patent No. 1,056,720, above referred to, and reference may be had to that patent for a full disclosure of the details of construction of those features of a heel building machine which are not novel, per 86, with the present inventor.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 indicates the frame and 12 the table of a heel building machine. Mounted upon the table 12 is a die and form holder 14 in suitably formed guiding grooves in which is secured a nailing die 16 having the usual driver and nail guiding holes 18 for the nail drivers 19, and upon the upper surface of which is supported a contractile heel form comprising a breast member 20 and side jaws 22, 24. The jaws 22, 24 are carried by the ends of arms 26, 28, pivoted respectively at 30, 32 to the member 14:. A spring 3%, attached to the frame 10 at 36 and to the jaw arm 26 at 38, tends normally to swing the jaws, which are interconnected by a pin and slot at 4L0, in a direction to open or expand the heel form to facilitate the introduction of the lifts.
The outer end of the jaw arm 26 is connected by a link 4-2 to a bell crank lever H: which moves about a pivot 46 and is actuated to contract or-close the form jaws upon the heel in opposition to the spring 3 by a treadle rod 48.
A beam or arm 50, corresponding to the beam 122 of the patent previously menent, and a detailed description thereof need not be repeated here.
Inasmuch as the expansion and contraction of the form jaws are controlled by the treadle rod L8 and are entirely independent of the power pressing and nail driving mechanism, it will be apparent that the arm 50 may be drawn forward and the power operation of the machine gone through with without the jaws 22, 24 being closedsecnrely upon the lateral surface of the heel. In or der to prevent this, a pin 54 is mounted to slide horizontally in a stationarj guide 56. The outer end of the pin 54- is threaded to receive adjustably a collar 58 having an annular groove 60, a check nut 62 serving to secure the collar in adjusted position upon the pin. A bellcrank lever 64 mounted for movement about a stationary pivot 66 has,
' at the end of one of its arms, an upwardly projecting lug 68 arranged to enter the groove 60 to control the longitudinal position of the pin 54 in the guide 56. At the end of the opposite arm of the bell crank lever 64 a pin 70 projects upwardly into cooperative engagement with a slot 72 formed in a lug 74 upon the under side of the jaw arm 26.
Normally, when the heel form is open or expanded, the pin 5% lies in the path of movement of the arm 50, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, preventing, or looking, the arm from being swung forwardly sufficiently to trip the clutch and start the power operation of the machine. When, however, the treadle rod %8 is depressed and the form is contracted upon the heel, the pin 5a is, through the connections above described, withdrawn, toward the right as seen in Fig. 2, sufliciently to permit the arm 50 to he swung forwardly into operative position.
An adjustable collar 58, in cooperation with the stationary guide member 56, acts as a stop to control the limit of inward movement of the pin 54 and, by adjustment of the collar longitudinally upon the pin, the relation of the pin to the form jaws may be so predetermined for any particular size of heel that the pin will, when the jaws are closed upon the heel, be withdrai *n just sufficiently to permit the arm 50 to pass by its end. When the arm 50 is thus drawn forwardly, the end of the pin, co-acting with the face of the arm, acts positively to prevent expansion or opening of the form until the arm has again been allowed to fall back past the pin after the completion of the J pressing and nail driving operations.
While the particular embodiment of the invention, selected for disclosure herein, has been specifically described as embodied in the organization of the machine of the Tripp patent previously identified, it should be understood that the invention is equally.
applicable to heel building machines of other specific forms of construction, and it is contemplatedthat it shall be so used.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a heel building machine, the combination of a'contractile heel form, means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, and lockout means for. preventing operation of the pressure applying means when the form is not contracted. l
2. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, power means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, and means for preventing operation of the power means when the form is not contracted.
3. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, power means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, and means for preventing operation of the power means unless the form is con inane za -means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, mechanism for expanding and contracting the form, and adjustable means under the control of said mechanism acting to prevent operation of the power means unless the form is contracted to. a predetermined variable extent.
6. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, means movable over and away from the form for applying pressure tov a heel in; the form and means for preventing movement of the pressure applying means over the form unless the form is contracted upon the heel.
7. In a heel building machine, the combination of a heel form comprising relatively movable jaws for engaging the lateral surface of a heel, means movable over and away from the form for applying pressure to a heel in the form, mechanism for efiecting relative approaching movement of the jaws, and means controlled by said mecha nism for preventing movement of the pressure applying member over the form.
8. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, manually operated mechanism for contracting the form upon a heel, power means for applying pressure to a heel in the form and means actuated by said manually operated mechanism for preventing operation of the power means unless the form is contracted.
9. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, means for contracting the form upon a heel blank, means for driving a nail through a heel in the form and means controlled by the form contracting means for preventing operation of the nail driving means unless the form is contracted.
10. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, means for driving a nail through a heel in the form, means for initiating the operation of the nail driving means, mechanism for contracting the form upon a heel and means con trolled by said mechanism for preventing operation of the nail driving means unless the form has been contracted.
11. In a heel building machine, the combination of a heel form comprising heel engaging members relatively adjustable toward and from each other, mechanism for operating upon a heel in the form, and lockout means for preventing operation of said mechanism unless the heel engaging members are adjusted within predetermined limits.
12. In a heel building machine, the combination of form aws relatively movable to engage the lateral surface of a heel, a presser foot preliminarily movable to a position over the form, power means controlled by the position of the presser foot to move it into engagement with the heel, and means for preventing the preliminary positioning movement of the presser foot unless the form jaws. are in heel engaging position.
13. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, power means for operating upon a heel in the form, and means for preventing expansion of the form until the operation of the power means is completed, constructed and arranged to permit free expansion and contraction of the form when the power means is not in operation.
14. In heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, power means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, and means for preventing expansion of the form before the pressure is released, constructed and arranged to permit free expansion and contraction of the form when the power means is not in operation.
15. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, means for driving a nail through a heel in the form and means for preventing expansion of the form before the completion of the nail driving operation, constructed and arranged to permit free expansion and contraction of the form when the nail driving means is not in operation.
16. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, power means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, means for driving a nail through the heel while it is under pressure, and means for preventing expansion of the form before completion of the nail driving operation and release of the pressure.
17. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, and means acting to prevent the application of pressure unless the form is contracted and to prevent expansion of the form before the pressure is released.
18. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, means for applying pressure to a heel in the form, and a single means acting to prevent the application of pressure unless the form is contracted and to prevent expansion of the form before the pressure is released.
19. In a heel building machine, the combination of a. heel form comprising relatively movable jaws for engaging the lateral surface of a heel, mechanism for closing the jaws upon a heel, a pressure applying member movable over and away from the form, and a movable stop connected to the jaw operating mechanism and arranged to lie in the path of movement of the pressure member toward the form when the jaws are open and to be retracted out of said path when the jaws are closed upon a heel.
20. In a heel building machine, the combination of a contractile heel form, mechanism for contracting and expanding the form, power means for operating upon a heel in the form, a member movable to start the operation of the power means, a stop normally lying in the path of the movable member when the form is expanded, and means connected to the form operating mechanism for withdrawing the stop from the path of said member when the form is v movable jaws for engaging the lateral surface of a heel, manually operated means for oscillating the jaws to aline the lifts of the heel, a presser foot movable over the form to apply pressure to the heel, and a stop c0nnected to said manually operated jaw oscillating means and constructed and arranged to lie in the path of movement of the presser foot toward the form when the jaws are open and to be retracted to permit the presser'foot to be moved over the form when the jaws are closed upon the heel.
