Description

G. 0. ERICKSON. COLLAPSIBLE HAT BOX. APPLICATION FILED AUG.I9, 1919.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
GILBERT O. ERICKSON, OF TAKOMA PAR-K, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COLLAPSIBLE HAT-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application filed August 19, 1919. Serial No. 318,507.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT O. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Takoma Park, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Collapsible llatBox; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same.
The invention relates to but boxes and has for its object to provide a collapsible or knock down'box of this character, thereby allowing the shipment of boxes in a compact condition so as to conserve shipping space.
A further object is to form the cylindrical body portion of the box in one strip provided with marginal attaching means whereby the same may be brought together to form the cylindrical body portion and to provide a bottom and cover for engaging the top and bottom edges of the cylindrical body member and to provide a string fastening for the box as a whole, said string fas,
tening being secured to the body member adjacent its end edge by a disk fastener and adapted to pass around fasteners on the body member at diametrical points and having its ends after passing around the bottom of the box tied above the top of the box, thereby maintaining the cover and bottom on the box.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat box.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the body member is formed.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing the bot tom and cover in telescoped position for compactness in shipment. 7
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body member of the box, said body member having its end 2 provided with tongues 3, which tongues are adapted to pass through slots 4: in the end 5 of the blanks from which the body member 1 is formed. hen the lugs 3 are in engagement with the slots 1, a cylindrical body member is formed, which body member may be oval shaped or round as desired. However, it is to be understood that as many lugs and slots.
3 and 4 may be provided as necessary according to the depth of the box desired.
Body member 1 has its bottom closed by means of a bottom 6, which bottom 6 is preferably provided with an outwardly ex tending flange 7 so that a cover 8 ha 'ing a correspondingly shaped flange 9 will easily telescope and nest therein thereby conserving space in shipment. It is the object to ship the blanks forming the body member 1 in-fiat form.
After the bottom and top have been placed on the body member 1 a string 10 which is secured to the blank forming the body member 1 as at 11 by a conventional form of disk is passed around the box as a whole. String 10 being secured at 11 by the disk 12 at a point spaced from one of its ends leaves a section of string 13 which is adapted to be passed-upwardly and be secured over the cover 8, there being a section 11 which section is passed circumferentially around the body member and over the disk fastening 15 thence downwardly and under the bottom as at 16 and passes transversely across the bottom, turning upwardly as at 17 at a point diametrically opposite the point 16 and passes over the disk fastener 18 thence passing circumferentially of the body member and around the disk 19;. p: ing downwardly and extending transverm as at 19 of the bottom, then passing upwardly as at 20 and around the disk fastener 21, which disk fastener is substantially at a diametrical point to the disk fastener 12. After the string leaves the disk fastener 21 it passes upwardly and over the edge of the cover 8 as at 22, and has its free end tied to the section 13 of the spring as at 24, thereby providing means for holding the cover on the box after the contents have been placed therein.
From the above it will be seen that a hat box has been provided which may be shipped in a fiat and compact form and one wherein the bottom will be securely held on the bottom of the cylindrical body portion after the box has been set up and means whereby the cover will be held in position after the box has been filled with merchandise.
' The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A collapsible box formed fron a blank,
said blank having means at its ends'for fas-jv tening saidends together thereby forming a cylindrical body member, a flanged bottom anda flanged top on said body member, a
string secured to the body member and adapted to be passed across the abutting edges of the blank to a fastener, thence downwardly and diametrically across the bottom of the boX, thence upwardly over a disk fastener at a point diametrically 0pposite to the first named disk fastener, thence circumferentially of the body memher and over a disk fastener at the starting point of the string, thence downwardly and diametrically under the bottom of the box at right angle to the cord previously placed across/the bottom, thence upwardly and around a disk fastener carried by the body part at a point substantially diametrically opposite the disk fastener at the starting point ofthe string and the .free end of the string being adapted to be-tied'to a string carried by the disk member at the starting strip, the vertical edgesofsaidbody strlp disk and string,
end of the string for maintaining the cover,
on the box. a r
2. A folding carton comprising a bod being provided with means adapted to in- *terengage, said body strip having secured thereto adjacent one of its vertical edges a said string being-secured at a vpoint spaced from its ends thereby forming a portion adapted to bepassed around the box and a portion adapted to be passed .over the cover and tied to the end of the first mentioned portionofthe string,
.a series of disks secured :to said body strip in alinement with the'firstmentioned-disk,
said disks being so disposed that when the vertical edges of the strip are brought together, said disks will be disposed at dia metrically opposite points at right angles to each other, top and bottom sections'for
