To all whom it may-concern:

Be it known that I, CARL A. W185, acitizen of the UnitcdStates, residing atWwt Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Sealing Devices, of which the followingis 'a specification. r

This invention relates to sealing devices and more particularly to a car door seal.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a cheap and eflicient seal for the looks, or fastening members, of railroad car doors and the like.

Another objectof the invention is to provide a simple band seal constructed in a manner that will permitit to be easily and quickly placed into operative position and designed to be retained in this position against the possibility of displacement, either accidentally or by tampering of unscrupulous persons.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a sealing device which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to whlch devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;

Fig. 5 is a plan of the blank from which the device is constructed.

Referring first to Fig. 5 of the drawing, it will be observed that the device is formed from an elongated strip 1 of sheet metal which may be of any desired length and width. At one end of the strip is a rectangular plate 2, one marginal edge of which is integrally formed with the strip at the center of the plate, while directlyopposite is a projecting tongue 3. Referring to the remaining figures of the drawing, it will be observed that the strip 1 may be bent to extend. throu h the shackle of an ordinary padlock. As s hown by Fig. t of the drawing, the end of the strip adj acent the plate 2 is bent as at 6, so that the strip lies parallel with the plate forming an open space 7. The tongue 3 is then bent inwardly and downwardly to project into the space 7. This construction brings the locking tongue 5 in lose proximity to the tongue 3, and this tongue 5 is then bent slightly inwardly to project into the space 'f for cooperating with the tongue 3.

The opposite end of the strip 1 is bent as at 10 to overlap itself, and the overlapped portion is bent upon itself as at 11, thus forming two retaining clips 12 and 13. The end portions of the plate 2 will be bent on the dotted lines indicated at 14, and around the adjacent portion of the strip 1 thus forming a casing 15 embracing the space 7.

The two retaining clips 12 and 13 as will be noted in Fig. 3 of the drawings, diverge outwardly from the bent portion 11 so that the tendency of the members 12 and 13 is to spring away from the adjacent sides of the strip. In this manner the retaining clips 12 and 13 tend to lock themselves when they engage the holding members in the casing.

Now, by bending the strip and thrusting the clips 12 and 13 downwardly into the casing between the tongues 3 and 5, the clips 12 and 13 will be received in the lower portion of the space 7 in the casing. hen in this position, the clips will spring outwardly and when the strip is withdrawn for a slight distance, the clips 12 and 13 will engage beneath and behind the tongues 3 and 5 as clearly indicated by Fig. 2 of the drawing.

It will 'be impossible to withdraw the clips from the casing until the latter has been opened, and this could not be accomplished except by destroying the casing. In this connection, it is pointed out that the overlapping edges of the plate which forms the casing are welded or otherwise secured together as indicated at 16 in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable sealing device has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to .be understood, however, that slight chan unto appended.
