Description

C. F. S-PERY.
CLAMP. Y APPLICATION FILED APILZS 19H.
Patelited Feb. 10,1920.
'Il 'III' .grilli lrlli i i 'UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F.. SPERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
v CLAMP.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.'
'lhis invention relates more particularly to` clamps which are used for attaching or securing one device to another such, for instance, as attaching a telephone to a support or bracket, or attaching a cylindrical member to a stand or support.
In forms of clamps heretofore used for attaching telephones to brackets, screws are commonly used for tightening the jaws of the. clamps. #It isl somewhat troublesome and more r'lless difficult tohold the several parts while the screws are being inserted vand the clamp properly adjusted. Theobjects of the present invention are to provide a clamfp of the lcharacter indicated which will have no screws or bolts for tightening the same; to provide a clamp4 which may be readily, applied to a telel phone or the like, 4and the parts quickly attached without the necessity of using any tools; to provide an improved form of clamp of the character described which will be simple in construction and will be particularly neat and attractive in appearance; and in general, to provide. such advantagesas will appear more fully from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention:
Figure 1 is a side view of the clamp shown I in connection with a 'telephone and bracket.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Figg is a front view; and,
Fig. 4 isa sectional view taken on the lines 4 4 of Figs. 1 and 2.
For convenience in description this invention may ,be considered as applied to a telephone bracket, although it may, of course,
be used for other purposes. As shown in the drawings, the bracket 5 has a rod or shaft 6 which is engaged by the clamp. The clamp. comprises, in general, two portions, one of which is iXed to the rod, while the other portion engages with the tubular part 7 of the telephone. .The portion-which is applied to the rod or shaft 6 is preferably made of a single piece of metal which is bent to form a cylindrical part 8 which sur- Speciication of Letters Patent. parts 9 which extend out from the tubular v part 8, .and are fastened together in any suitable manner. i This may be conveniently done by forming tongues 10 at the ends of one of these parts and bending these tongues in over the adjacent opposed part. The outer portions of the metal plate are bent, as shown -in Figs. V1, 2, and 4, to form converging channels 11 which coact to provide a tapered socket for the portion 12 of the clamp which embraces Ithe tube 7 This portion may, in some instances, be made of a single piece, but is preferably made in two pieces when it is to bel used for attaching a telephone. One of these pieces is providedv with a tongue 13 which engages with a suitably shaped slot .or recess 14 in the opposite piece, so as to make a smooth and inconspicuous joint. The edges 15 of the two parts are bent, as shown in Figs. 1,2, and 4, to form converging, engaging rmembers for engagement with the grooves 11.
The operation and advantages of this devicewill be readily apparent to those skilled lin the art. The bracket 5.is preferably made seen that this makesv an exceedingly/simple device to ap ly and, while it will hold' the parts secure y in position, it may also be readilydisassembled when desire -It will be observed that various changes may be made in the form of construction for applying the devicein different Ways, Without departing from this invention and, therefore, I do notf wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described except as set forth in the following claims inwhich I claim:
1. The combination of a single plate of metal bent to form a cylinder at one side and asocket at the other side, and a coacting clamping member comprising two jointed sections forming acylinder with tapered tongues `for engagement with said socket,
the arrangement being such that the second named member Will be tightened around the part to be held when the tongues are pressed into the socket.
2. The combination With a telephone bracket having a Vertical rod,of a clamping member rotatably engaging With Said rod and having a tapered socket, a second clamping member adapted to encircle the tube of the telephone74 saidmember comprising tWo portions, the adjacent edges of which are bent to form tape-red tongues for engagement With said socket.
