Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed April 1B, 1817. Serial No. 162337.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form. v
I desire it to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific applica-.
tion of myEanti-rattler to automobiles as it may be used upon any form of coupling where it is desired to prevent looseness and play oftthcpartsl V S illustrate'd in the preferred embodi- 66 went ofrmy invention, I have shown it as Extendingfromjthe ends of the spring to he ap-' the; iilhtion at the-snob: the rod tlj applied to the standard type of connection between the steering rod and steering arm of automobiles and referring to the lnven tion in detail, with reference to the draw ing in which like reference characters in 1 dicate corresponding parts,-my inventi n comprises a si"le pie'ceof heavy wire bent. upon itsel lto vform a coil spring 2 having a looped'central portion 3 project ing at one s'idetherefrom; and arcnawl; formed to' provide a. hooked en'd'portion and at-the op itefside thereof, the remaining portion 0 the wire forms spairl of spaced parallel arms 5 audit extending for a con *1) sidemble-distaii'ce beyond the-coil '2 of. thr

When it is desired to apply my anti-rattler, the arm 6 is disengaged from the hook 8 formedon lt e transversely on tending areuate end po 210 117 andthe pro jecting hook member is'dis d,. betw een the fumations of the end .the steering rod 9 in enga ent withjh of the knuckle 10. When it is des'iredto detach the same, it is mefiel necessary to disengage the arm 6 from't e book 110 8 and remove the device in the manner in which it was applied.
Owing to its construction and arrangement as clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings supplementing this description, it will be seen'that the hook member 4 under action of the coil spring 2 will bear against the surface of the knuckle 10 pro- Ylding an efl'ectual means for preventing ,10 looseness of its connection with the adjacent ingbeyond the portion 7' and in t e same direction. The arm 6 terminates short of the arm 5' and the hook member 8 of the referred form is dispensed with. When the Hevioe is applied the arm 5 will be bent so as to e'ngagethe arcuate portion 'U over the si ,of the rod having the portion 7" th thereover.
I g 'le I have shown and described .cer-
tain specific details and manner of con- "struction as well as location of the component parts of my invention, I desire it to be-Iundrstoodthatl do not wish to limit ,i my'self specifically to these details as de-,'
i jscribed .and shown, but that any changes 'may be made therein as may fall within the 4o sec of the appended claims. claim 1. In combination with first and second lane parallel with. the bent port1on-7' o t e arm 5, lpromotmembers having a hinge pin joint therebetween, of a wire bent n on itself and engaging one member at t 10 bent portion of the wire, said wire being fulcrumed'on the second member adjacent the hinge joint, the free ends of the wire extending away from the joint and providing means meeting by springing the wire as its own integral 5 unit to engage the second member and hold the wire assembled with the members at the Joint.
2. In a device of the class described, a. longitudinal spring formed from a single piece of resilient metal bent upon itself to form intermediate coils, said 5 ring in its extent one way from'said coils eing ofl'set to ex-' tend partially about a knuckle of a steering gear and receive the arm of said knuckle, and in its extent the other way from said coils being adapted to encircle partially a connecting rod of a steering device for maintaining the spring in place. i
3. In combination with a spindle arm of 35 a stubaxle, a steering rod having a forked end to whichsaid spindle arm is pivoted a wire bent upon itself at its longitudinal center and engaging at its bent portion the pivotal spindle end and extending between the forked art of the steering rod, said- \fn'irf: being lcrnmed over the edge of the or ed short distance from its free bent to form oppositely disposed books adapted toyieldlngly engage the steering rod ortion andbent at righ lee a P ends, end
In testimony whereof I havehdreunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. go
