ADVERTISING DEVIGE. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed August 25, 1919. Serial No. 319,660.
. b all whom it may concern:
' provide a device of this character wherein the advertising matter is carried upon a band and mechanism is provided for causing this band to travel so as to display the advertising thereon.
Afurther object is to provide a device of this character so constructed that it may be readily placed. in any show window and in which the advertising band may be of different'sizes so as to suit difi'eren-t sized show windows without altering or changing the mechanical featuresfof the mechanism.
A further object is to provide a very simple, cheap, and easily operated construction of this kind requiring but little power, and
in which the means for operating the display a band is entirelyconcealed from view.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein f- Figure 1 is a front elevation of an advertising device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the construc tion illustrated in. Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a detail. sectional view of the supporting base forthe shaft 14; v
Fig. 5 is a sectional view onthe line 5- 5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my device comprises a motor hous-.
ingdesignated 10 having therein a vertical shaft support carrying the main driving shaft for the display band, this housing, as
- illustrated, being made of thin, light metal and being somewhat conical or pyramidal in shape. It is formed at its base with an outstanding flange 11 throu h which pointed screws 12 may pass, where y the base may V be attachedto the'fioor of the show window. This housing provided with a door-13 whereby access to the interior of the housing may be had. Disposed within the housing is a vertical shaft 14: which extends upward through the l top of the housing and which rests in a vertical bearing member 15', this bearing mem her being hollow and provided at its lower end with a scatter an anti-friction ball 15.
' The shaft 14 is rounded at its lower end and rests upon this ball 15 so that theshaft may rotate with the least possible friction. Mounted upon the shaft by means of a set screw is a gear wheel 16 which is adapted to mesh with a pinion 17 carried by the shaft of the motor 18". This motor may be an electric motor or any other suitable motor, butit preferably is an electric motor.
The shaft 14 extends above the top of the housing and carriesupon it a cylindrical,
hollow, metallic roller 19 of thin sheet metalwhichis suitably connected to the shaft at metal shall be concentric to the shaft. This shaft or roller is formed with a conical up per end 20 which may be formed of a plurality of sections of metal soldered together, or might be spun up. This roller at its lower end is formed with a flange 21 and between the cap 20 and the flange, the roller has a length of approximately 10" under a plurality of points so thatthe shell or ordinary circumstances andthe roller has a diameter of about 6", though it may be of any suitable diameter.
Coasting with the housing 10 is a second housing 21 also formed of thin sheet metal and having a base flange 22 for the purpose of attaching set screws and at the top of this housing is a shaft 23 resting on a ball 24' carried in a tubular bearing 25, and this shaft also carries upon it the shell or roller 26 having a conical or pyramidal cap, the roller being formed with a flange at its outer end. Operating over these two rollers is a traveling belt 27 upon which" advertisingmatter is placed. 4
It will be understood that the roller 26 is idle, that is it is not a driving roller. The roller 19 is the driving roller.
It will be obvious that with the mechanism illustrated this display band 27 may be caused to travel around the rollersf19 and 26 so as to display the advertising "matter thereon to the public. The band may "be of any suitable dimensions and obviously of any desiredlength and thus it is an easy matter to dispose it in any show window without regard to its length, as the band' verydight, can be put in place at any timeand as quickly removed, and, because of the conical or pyramidal caps to the rollers 19 and 26, it 1s an easy matter to remove a band or place a new one in position. The sign belt may be, made from 5 to long.
The advertising matter can be constantly changed by changing the belts and without anything except a short stoppage .of the machinery. Thus, the advertising belts may be changed every day and new matter placed thereon. The belts may be made of any suitable material and it IS obvious that theybelt carried by said rollers,
may contain a variety of attractive and interesting matter.
While I have illustrated aform of my invention which I believe to be thoroughly effective in practice, I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction illustrated, as the details of construction may be changed in many ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim An advertising device of the character described comprising two "disconnected base members, a bearing projectin from the-bottom of each base member, a s raft jou-rnaled at one end, .in each bearing, the 'free end portions of said shafts projecting above said base, and a'roller carried by and-surrounding the free end of each shaft, each of said rollers having a conical end and an endless said belt being guided onto the rollers by said conical ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflixmy signature.
