To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS A. MoNreoM- ERY, citizen of theUnited States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and 'State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Passenger Railway-Car Seats -or Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in passenger railway car seats or chairs, and has particular reference to an attachment for. the back element of the seat or chair, which attachment is adapted to be opened, and used for various purposes.

An important object of the invention is to provide an attachment of. the above mentioned character which may serve, when opened, as a writing desk, a lunch table, a baggage, or luggage tray, or as a seat or crib for a baby, while not necessarily restricted to these uses.

Other objects and vention will be apparent advantages of the induring the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the seat element of the seat or chair, which may be suitably upholstered, and supported 'by legs 6.

The inner sides of the back sections or trays are preferably lined with plates 16, formed of any suitable material, and these uppermost when the the open or horizontal Support straps or links 17, pivback sections or trays work 8, as shown. The numeral 19 designates rails, each of which embodies longitudinal bars 20, carried by vertical posts 21 having reduced ends 22, for detachable engagement within openings 23, formed in the plates 16. These rails are therefore adapted, to be detachably secured to the upper surfaces of the back sections,when in the open position, such rails then vertical. Particular attention is called to the fact that these rails and the support'straps 17 form an .inclosing frame with the back sections, the Same being then adapted to serve as a crib for a baby, and will prevent the baby from falling'out of the same, which might otherwise be caused by the movements of the train. It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described of a railway seator chair having an openring formed therein which exten s through the opposite sides thereof, of back sections pivoted to the back element and adapted for movement into the opposite sides of said opening, support straps connected with the back sections and back element and diagonally arranged when the back sections are open, and rails .detachably connected with the free ends of the back sections and coacting with the straps-for providing aisurrounding frame for the open back sections.
