To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CARNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a loose lea-f binder which is characterized by two pairs of binding posts which clamp loose leaves with only two holes or perforations in each of the latter. The binder has also incorporated therein a locking slide by means of which posts of the binder are securely locked together when the binder is in its closed and locked position and locks the loose leaves in place.

A pair of book covers 20 and 21 are shown with the back 22. At the edges of the back 22 are formed flexible joints 23 and 24. With the covers are also formed flexible joints 25 and 26.
Within the cover 20 and between the joints 23 and 25 is located the U-shaped casing A with the members 30 and 31. In each of the members are formed the similar openings 32 and 33. Cylindrical separators 35 and 36 are located between the members 30 and 31 and are clamped in place by means of the rivets 37.
A locking slide B has formed at one end the legs 41 and 42, the latter having formed therewith the stop 43. A clearance cavity 45 in the slide B has projecting therein the locking pin 46. A second clearance cavity v48 in the slide B has projecting therein the ing A are fastened the lower ends of the post member 54, 55 as plainly indicated at the mortise 56 in Fig. 10. Each of the post members 54 and 55 is semi-cylindrical in cross-section and circular lengthwise. Solder is also used to fasten said post members to the member 30 of the casing A. At the lower end of each of the post members 54 and 55 is formed a locking opening 59 which is located to register with the locking pins 46 and 50.
A post member supporting bar 60 is inclosed in the cover 21 between the joints 24 and 26. A pair of post members 62 and 63, similar to the post members 54, 55 are fastened to the bar 60 as indicated by the mortise 61. The latter post members are also preferably soldered to the bar 60. At the outer ends of the post members 62 and 63 .are formed the locking openings 64 which register with the openings 59 in the post members 54, 55 and are engaged by the locking pins 46 and 50, when the binder is located in its closed position.
In the supporting bar 60 is formed an opening 68 adjacent to the foot of the post member 62, and a similar opening 69 adjacent to the foot of the post member 63. When the post member 62 registers with the post member 54, a two membered post, cylindrical in cross-section, is produced and which is also true of the post members 55 and 63.
To use the invention loose leaves D have each pun hed therein a pair of holes at one of the edges thereof, of a diameter and gage suitable for the posts of the binder when the accompanying semi-cylindrical post members register with each other. The binder is located in its open position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the leaves D are located on a pair of the semi-cylindrical post members extending from one of the covers or they may be placed partly on a pair of the post members on one cover, and a portion may be placed on the post members of the other cover.
Before the covers 20 and 21 have been located in their open position, the locking slide B has been pulled out of the casing A, so that the separator bears against the upper end 43 of the stop 43 and the crown 51 of the guide opening 51 is in close proximity of the accompanying portion of the separator 36. The covers 20, 21 of the binder are now placed in their closed position, the post member 62 is located to register with the post member 54. and the post member 63 is located to register with the post member 55.
The openings 64 are located with their axial centers coincident with the axial centers of the openings 59. Finally the operator forces the locking slide B to the inner end of its stroke, so that the separator 36 bears against the crown 51 of the guide opening 51, and the separator 35 bears against the end 43 of the stop 43. Thereby the locking pins 46 and 50 are caused to enter the locking openings 59 and 64 and lock the accompanying semi cylindrical post members together. The leaves D are now securely locked in the binder. The openings 32 and 33 permit the post members 62 and 63 to be located in the locking positions, while the openings 68 and 69 perform the same functions for the post members 54 and 55. The resiliency of the leg 42 permits it to spring, to enable the stop 43 to pass the separator 35 when the slide B is being moved. The resistance however of the leg 42 is suflicient to lock the separator 35 with the end 43 of the .stop 43 of the slide B, when the latter is in its locked position as shown particularly in Figs. 5, 6 and 8.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by- Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In a loose leaf hinder the combination of a pair of book covers, a pair of post meny hers extending from each cover, one pair of post members each having an opening near its foot and the other pair each having an opening near its outer end, the post members spaced so that one pair will lie adjacent to the other pair when the binder is closed and a locking slide coacting with said openings to lock said post members together when the binder is in its closed position.
2. In a loose leaf binder the combination of a pair of book covers, a back connecting the covers, a pair of post members each with a flat face and also a semi-cylindrical face extending from each cover, the post members spaced so that the flat faces of one pair will lie adjacent to the flat faces of the other pair when the binder is in its closed position, the post members of one cover each having an opening adjacent to its foot and the post members of the other pair each having an opening at its outer end and a locking slide coacting with said openings to lock the pairs of post members together.
3. In a loose leaf binder the combination of a pair of book covers, a back connecting the covers, a V-shaped casing within one of said covers adjacent to said back, a locking slide within said casing, having an operating flange extending out of its cover and'a pair of locking pins, a post member supporting bar inclosed within the other cover and ad jacent to said back, a pair of post members each having an opening near its foot extending from said casing, a pair of post members extending from said bar and spaced to lie adjacent to the posts of the other pair respectively and each of the latter post members having an opening at its outer end, the latter opening being axially in line with the openingin one of the other post members when the binder is in its closed position, the locking pins of the locking slide locking each accompanying pair of post members together when the slide is placed in its inward position.
