To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED T. Snnvrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ontario, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pouring-Spouts for Cans, of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a device readily attachable in a closed can so that the contents of the can may be poured therefrom as desired.

The further purpose of the invention seeks the provision in combination with a device of this character, of a suitable gasket and an attendant plate and for the gasket having extension adapted to close an air hole in the can, the air hole being provided for the type of the attachment of the device to make the free flowing of the contents of the can.

Further purpose resides in a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other and further purpose appears in the following description wherein the invention is set forth in detail.

To the exact construction in which it is shown and described the invention is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or-alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claims.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown-as a device suited for attachment toclosed cans for the pouring therefrom of the contents of the cans. To this end the invention comprises a spout consisting of the curved tubular section-2 terminating at one end in aninternally threaded portion 3 in which there is received the reduced threaded portion 4 of a frusto conical member 5, the latter having a portion of its length formed with the external threads 6. length and access from the outside to this hollow portion is hadthrough the diametrically disposed rectangular openings 7. The section 5 below the threads 6 blends into a tapering pointed section 8.

The section 5 is adapted for detachable connection with the tubular section of the spout at the internally threaded end of the latter, and the externally threaded end 4.- of the section?) being of the reduced diameter as compared with that part of the section with which it connects, a shoulder is formed-between which and the extremity of the portion 3a rubber gasket 9 is carried, a plate 10' being carried on top of the gasket and abutting the under end of the section 8.

The gasket 9 is formed with a radially projecting portion 11 and the plate 10 is similarly formed with a projection lying on top of the projection 11.

The spout or tubular portion 2 at a suitable point is formed with a projecting portion 12 which is made flat on the upper face to adapt it for striking with a hammer or other implement.

The upper extremity of the spout of the tubular portion 2 carries two spaced ears 13 spanning which there is a pin 14:, the latter serving as a pivot for the cap 15 which closesthe free end of the spout when the can in which the device is attached stands in upright position.

In the use of the device, the gasket 9 and its attendant plate 10 are attached between the spout section 2 and the threaded section 5, as above specified, and the top of the can 16 is punctured at a desired point by the use of the pointed portion 8 of the section 5, the projection 12 being struck with a hammer to effect this in the event that the material of the can is too tough to permit an ordinary pressure by the hand to effect the puncture. To the side of this puncture,

the spout is attached by forcing the pointed portion of the section 5 through the material of the cover of the can until the threaded portion 5 reaches the latter, when the turning of the spout will result in the threaded portion of the section 5 passing through the cover of the can until the gasket 9 lies on top of the can, when the spout becomes similarly attached in the can. The projecting or free end of the spout 2, together with the projection 12 affords adequate means for turning the spout by hand to effect its attachment in the can and the When not in use the can, of course, sets on its bottoma position which brings the spout upright and permits its cap 15 to close its free end, the gasket 9 and its attendant plate being turned so that the projection 11 and the attendant portion of the plate stand over the puncture made in the can. Desiring to pour the contents from the can, the gasket 9 and its plate 10 are swung angularly around or slightly raised to permit air to pass through the puncture into the contents of the can, the subsequent upturning of which will permit the contents oi the can to flow out through the spout 2.

From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing, it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the invention is had to render further description unnecessary.

The. invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the kind described comprising a spout portion, a conically shaped threaded portion connecting with the spout-portion, thethreaded portion having means for causing it to enter the material of a can, and a member secured jointly by the spout portion and the threaded portion, the said member being adapted for covering or uncovering an air hole made in the can beside the device.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the kind described, comprising a spout portion having an internally threaded end, a eonically shaped externally threaded portion engageable in the internally threaded portion 01 the spout, a gasket carried between the spout' and the conically shaped portion and a plate similarly shaped to the gasket and interposed between it and the spout portion, the said plate and gasket being formed with a lateral projection, the conically shaped portion being formed with a terminal point to permit its efi'eeting a puncture of the material of a can so that the threaded portion may be made to screw through said material to bring the gasket against the outer face thereof, the projection of said gasket and plate being adapted for alternate covering and uncovering oi an air hole formed in the can, for the useful purpose specified.
