DRAWER on SHELF LINING.
Specification of Letters Patent. A Patented Jan. 13,
Application 1ed March 15, 1918. Serial No. 222,600.
specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in drawer or shelf linings, proposing a lining which is especially intended for domestic use in connection with the drawers of articles of furniture, such as bureaus, chiffoniers and the like or with shelves of cupboards, wardrobes and similar cabinets.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a lining which may be easily and quickly adjusted to fit the drawer or shelf with which it is to be used, which, when fit ted in position, shall not be liable to displacement, which, despite its capacity for adjustment, may carry out or preserve certain designs of ornamental character, and which may be manufactured and sold at very low cost.
With the above objects in view the invention consists generally of a liningr which is made in sections adapted to be fitted in the respective corners of a drawer or shelf and to be secured together as fitted whereby to provide a single continuous lining sheet which vconforms to the dimensions of said drawer or shelf and presents an even, regular, and unbroken surface which maybear ornamental figures or designs whose esthetic value will be preserved in connection with anyadjustment of the lining. o
An embodiment of the invention is illus trated in the acompanying drawings, where- 1n Figure 1 is a bottom -plan view of the sections of the lining, showing them spaced from one another and in the relation of their normal adjacency.
Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views ofthe lining as applied to two different drawers which vary from one another in length and width.
Fig. 4 is a' sectional view on theline 4-4 l if Fig. 2. In this figure it has been necessary to somewh-atexaggerate the thickness of the sections of the lining.
"Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts "throughout the several vlews'. y I
The lining consists of four sections which are differentiated from one another bythe letters A, B, C and D, and, as manufactured, will preferably bear distinguishing indicia applied to their underfaces. These sections are counter-parts, as to outline and dimensions and are of rectangular form;'they differ structurally from one another, however, as regards certain features of their under faces which are employed to effect their mutual connection in adjustedy relation whereby the sections will constitute'a single lining sheet. V
Thus the under face of the section A may' be perfectly plain; the under face of the section B has a strip or zone 1 of mucilage or similar adhesive along its inner side or longitudinal edge; the under face of the section C has a strip or zone 2 of adhesive material along its inner end or transverse edge; and l the under face of the section D has strips or zones 3 and 1 of adhesive material along its' inner side or longitudinal edge and` its inne]l end or transverse edge.
In fitting the lining to a drawer the sections arevarranged with .their faces shown in Fig. l,` downward and the procedure is as follows: The section A isirstplaced squarely in the upper or rear right hand corner of the drawer; then the section B is placed in the lower or front right hand corner of the drawer and its inner side or longitudinal edge is laid over the section A and pasted to it by means of thestrip or' zone of adhesive material 1; the section C is then fitted in the upper or rear left hand corner of the drawer 'and its inner end or trans-l verse edge is laid over the section A and pasted to it by means of the strip or zone of adhesive material 2; and the section D is then fitted in the lower or front left hand i, corner of the drawer with its inner side or longitudinal-edge laid overthe section -Gand @its -inner end or transverse edge laid over the section-B to which the said inner side andl end -edges are then secured by means of the zones of adhesive material 3 and 4. It will thus be seen that the adjustment of the sections relatively to one another whereby they conform to the dimensions of the ldrawer is an incident of the iittingl of said sections squarely in the corners of the drawer in the manner described.- When the sections have'been secured together'by means of the zones of adhesive material 1, 2, 3 and 4 they 'constitute a single continuous lining sheet which is not liable todisplacement and whose upper or exposed surface is even, regular,y and without interruption. The increased thickness of the sheet inthe portions where thesections overlap is obviously without any appreciable veffect on the regularity or evenness of the upper or exposed surfac of the sheet. i
The word longitudinal las applied'ito edges of the sections refers to the edges which will lie withinthe .dimension taken between the end walls of they drawer and the word transverse as applied to theedges of the sectionl refers to the'I edges which will lie within the dimension taken between the front and rear walls of the drawer.
` The upper faces of the sections may bear any suitable ornamental figures or designs selected to provide a composite scheme of 2o ornamentation throughout the sheet, re-
gardless of the dimension whichthe sheet may have in consequenceJ of the adjustment of said sections. tov a'particular 'drawer or .A shelf. As aneX'aInpleof this the drawings show thev upper face of the sheet'as vhavingv a marginal` border X and a ie'ld Y within the border and which may be provided with smallornamental'igures. It will be noted that theform and relation of the 'border and field will not be impaired'by variations in thepdixnensions of the sheet.-
l While the ornamentation of the sheet may 'be'of `any desired character it is preferred rthat it include the border, as shown, since such aborder assists inproperly locating the sections with relation to one another andto the sides and ends of the drawer or shelf.
While the sections of each lining will be Witnesses: slightly greater thanfthearea of a. A 4
- Having fully described. my invention I claimi A 1. An adjustable lining for drawers -or shelves composed of four rectangular sections which are counterparts 'in size, therst' of which may have al plain underface and the second of which is provided with a strip inner transverse edge of its underface and the fourth with strips of adhesive material along both the inner longitudinal and inner transverse edges of its underface. l
of adhesive material along the inner Vlongitudinal edge of its underface, the third with a strip of' adhesive material along the 2. An adjustable lining forv drawers or.'
lshelves composed of four rectangular sections-which are counterparts in size', the first of which may have a plain underface and lthe second of which is provided with a strip A'of adhesive material along the-inner longitudinal edge of its underface, the .thirdwith a strip of adhesive material along the inner transverse edge of its underface and the fourth with stripsl of adhesive material along -both the inner longitudinal and inner transverse edges of itsunderfaceythe said sections having such ornamentation applied to their upper faces `as will facilitate the proper location ofthe sections relatively to -the sides andends of the drawer or shelf yto which the lining is to be itted.-
3.-.An adjustable lining for drawers or shelves comprising four counte art rectangular sections,v .certain of which have their underface's gummed ,whereby the sectionsmay be fitted in the respective corners of a drawer or shelf, and secured together as -they are fitted-to provide a single 'andvco'ntinuous lining 4sheet vwhose dimensions will conform to the surface dimensions of said drawer or shelf.
In testimony whereof I-.have hereunto-set nesses.
