Further, slnce it IS necessary to havethe'feed arranged as shown and to have a second feed operating on the goods in frontfof the needlesand the main feed operating on the goods in the rear thereof, it follows that the needles descend into the U-shaped carrier, and in order to form the stitches the loopers must cooperate with the needles in that position, so that in the present improvement the U-shaped form of carrier is necessary to accomplish the object sought, 7

The rear -portion of the feed dog holder is'providedwith a lengthwiseextending T-slot fi for. adjustably securing thereto several main feed dogs58 (see Fig. 6). Each feed dog car ries a nut 55 to fit the T-slot and is so shaped as to clamp the feed dog in its proper vertical and lateral position, so as to properly cooperate with the throat plate 56 and presser foot 57 to properly feed the Work. The feed dog 58 maybe adjusted vertically on its nut 55 by providing the dog with a slot 58 (shown in dotted lines), and the nut 55 may be adjusted laterally in the T- slot 5 1. In the present instance there-are three feed dogs 58 secured in the T-slot ('see Fig. 2). needle :mechanism and stitch carrying fingers, which areoperative in the manner therein shown'and described.
The operation of these improved feeding: and looper mechanisms is as follows; i
The parts are sotimed as to'give endwise reciprocation to the link 10 to rock the arms 12 on their shaft 14:. This rocks the arm 18 and gives endvvise reciprocation to the feed dog holder or carrier 25 and at-the same time the-eccentric 4 operating in its bearing 59 operates lever 51 so as to give motion to the feed dog holder or carrier by means of the' adjustable yoke connection comprising parts 44 46 and iS) thereby to give a rise and-fall movement to the feed dogs and feed dog carrier so as to effect a four-n'zotion feeding action-toproperly feed the work. The movement'of the lever 51 also actuates the lever 61 onits shaft 63 to operate the arm and reciprocate the-link 67, and the yoke 69 thereofgiving endwis'e reciprocation to the loopershafts 70 and 71. Simultaneously with this'movement the rod 76 is also actuated so as to rock the looper shafts by means .of its connection 77 with the crank 78. The sliding feed dog 30 is'moved at the same time with the feed dogs 58 butthe stroke of the feed may be varied by manipulating the slide block t up and downthe curved arm &0. The link 46 has the same movement as the link 10 when the slide block is adjusted to the lowest position on'the-arm 40 so as to meet the bottom stop screw 41 (see Fig. 1). At this time the differential feed dog 30 will have the same movement as the feed dog 58, that is to say, they will feed in unison. On the other hand, when the slide block 42 returns to its initial or substantially its top position as shown in several views, the differential feed dog 30 will have a greater movement than the feed dog 58 to produce a gathering action on-tho work! It will of course'be understood that the various details may be more or lessvaried or departed from without changing the scope or spirit of the present improvement. From the foregoing it will be" observed that the looper mechanism "includes a pair of spaced independently 'supported' and opposed loopers 'loc'atedto operate in the spacebetween the' feed dog su'pporting'portiens of the feed dog carrier, and that, al' pai t' oftfi looper actuating means is animated withthe driving shaft through the, 'inediiin'i"Pof the same member or lever whiclf givesthefrisa and fall m'ovement'to'the feed dogcarrier.
It will also be observed that the actuating means for the dilferentialfeed' dog' is connected with the means which recip'rocates the feed dog carrier, so that the" difierential feed dog may move in unison with'the main feed dog when desired, and'that "dating the op eration of'the feed mechanism the-feeding movement of the differentialfe'ed dog may be varied at the will "of; the'jopratoi' by merely shifting the block 42 on thei'curved arm s0, and therefore the" resent improve ment provides a very e cient combined feeding and looper mechanism operated from the same driving shaft and largely from the same actuating means on that drivingshaft. f
The needle mechanism in the presentinstance, as shown in Fig. 3, comprises two sets of spaced needles 79, each set consisting of three needles while the finger mechanism comprises a pair of fingers 80, the needles being reciprocated by suitable means in the usual way, while the fingers are moved in a circular path substantially around the path of the needles by suitable mechanism, the details of which not'being claimedoherein, it is not'necessary to further describe, since this operating means is 4 described and claimed in my co-pending application here inbefore referred to.
The present improved machine, being particularly constructed for a special char actor of work, this somewhat governs the form of the feed mechanism used. This special form of work also requires the use of a post machine and as the working mechanism of the feeding and stitching elements must be confined in that post and as it is necessary to have access to these parts, it is therefore'necessary'to have both sides of the feed carrier open for the movement of the loopers, the handling of the thread'and the threading of the loopers. As the top of the feeds must act through the slots in the throat plate to feed the work, there is only one position in which the U-shaped portion -'of the feed carrier can be located, and that rier a two sided feed carrier were used with the bottom le t open but suitably braced or yoked atthe sides instead of at the bottom, "there would be' 'no way to thread the loopers or adjust them, "neither would there be a S of @I llectillglthe' feed liftg connection 46% r v. v
i In the present machine, the feeding arrangement-issuch asto permit the work to be drawnin from the rear and feed off the machine. This necessitates that the major portion of the feed actuating mechanism be'located at the front of the machine, which is' -a' somewhat unusual arrangement in this type ofjmachlne.
