To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABEL ROBERT Hosrnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the followin is the specification.

lily invention relates to improvements in hinges, and refers especially to sliding hinges.

The main object of my invention is to provide a hinge by which seats of settees and the like may be hinged at the back without the insertion of an intermediate strip when the said settee is provided with a back.

My invention is more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which similar parts are designated by similar numerals throughout all the views.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinary settee having the usual back 2, arms 3, and removable seat 4. The arms 3 are recessed at 5 substantially on a level with the bottom of the seat 4. The vertical portion or riser 7 of the initial step 6 of the hinge is suitably attached to the back 2, and the tread 8 of the second step of the said hinge are secured to the underside of the recesses 5. The tread 6 of the initial step 6 is also preferably provided with depressions 9. The pins 10 have flat portions 11 by means of which they are secured to the rear of the underside of the seat 4.

When the seat 4 is down the pins 10 rest on the tread 6 of the initial step. As the front of the seat is lifted the pins 10 slide forward along the tread 6 of the initial step, and when the seat is in its upturned position the said pins rest in the depressions 9. The latter are provided so as to prevent one end of the seat 4 from going back cornerwise against the back 2 as it is being lowered, and jamming against the arms 3. The function of the said recesses is to hold the pins 10 in their forward position until the seat 4 has been lowered, when the latter -is again pushed into place against the back 2. From the foregoing it will be seen that although the provision of depressions 9 is advisable in cases where arms are employed, the hinge may be made with the tread 6 directly connected with the vertical portion 12, and, in fact, the latter form of construction is advisable where no arms are used.

Although in the foregoing my invention has been shown and described as applied to a settee, this form of sliding hinge may be used on automobile seats, hall stands, or for any article in which the seat or top is to be opened from the front and which has a back projecting vertically above the level of the said seat or top.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hinge for settee covers, comprising in combination with the frame having a back extending above the seat, a seat having pivot pins extending beyond the ends at the corners adjacent to the back, and brackets forming slides engaging said pins and extending forwardly from the back and adapted to allow the coverto incline backwardly at the top when open.

2. In a hinge for settees, the combination with the cover and the frame having recesses in the inner sides of the ends, of metal brackets forming slides having horizontal portions arranged within said recesses, said brackets having rounded depressions at the forward ends and end stops at the outer sides of said depressions, and pivot pins rigidly secured to the underside of the cover at the back corners and having rounded portions extending outwardly into said slides and adapted to rest in the depressions in said brackets when the cover is raised allowing the seat to incline backwardly against the back.
