Description

J. T. HUMPHREY.
FOLDING CLOTHES RACK. APPLICATION man JUNE 26, 1911.
1,326,059. Patented Dec. 23,1919.
JOHN T. HUMPHREY, OF GOUVERNEUR, NEW YORK.
FOLDING CLOTHES-RACK.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1919.
Application filed June 26, 1917. Serial No. 177,036.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. HUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gouverneur, in the county of St. Lawrence, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Clothes-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes drying racks, and pertains more particularly to devices of this character which are portable.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to use either for drying clothes inside of a building, or outside of the building.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a device of this character in which a plurality of clothes supporting arms may be folded to either an inoperative or an operative position.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a View in elevation showing the device with certain of its arms in the operative position and certain arms in the inoperative position,
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the device,
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the device, and;
Fig. 4: is a detail view of one of the standard 10 the semi-spherical member be-' ing designated by the reference character 11, and said semi-spherical member is provided on its interior with a socket or the like 12 for the reception of the upper end of the standard 10.
Arranged concentrically of the semispherical member, on the interior thereof The lower edge of the semi-spherical member 11 is provided with a plurality of equidistantly spaced notches or the like 15, and extending transversely of each of said notches, there is a pin 16, said pin being positioned at a point in the same horizontal plane as the concentric member 13.
Mounted on each of the pins 16 there is an arm 17 said arm 17 being provided with an elongated slot 18 through which the pin 16 is adapted to pass, and by means of which the arm is mounted in such a manner that it has sliding movement on said pin. The end of the arm adjacent the elongated slot 18 is provided with a hook 19, and said hook 19 is adapted to engage the circular concentric member 13 to support the arm 17 in a position at right angles to the standard or support 10.
The standard or support 10 comprises two sections which are secured together, one of said sections being provided with a socket 20 into which extend the end of the other member which is tapered at its lower end as at 21 to provide means by which said stand ard is adapted to be inserted into the ground if the device is to be used out of doors. To provide for using the device indoors, a plurality of supporting legs 25 are adjustably secured to a ring 26 and said ring is provided with a set screw or the like 27 by means of which it may .be adjusted longitudinally of the standard 10.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if the hook portion of the arms 17 is disengaged with the circular wire member 13, that the arms will hang vertically from the edges of the inverted semi-spherical member 11. If however, the arms 17 are moved so that the hook portions 19 are engaged with the circular concentric member 13 the arms will be supported in a plane at right angles to the standard 10. In this position they are capable of supporting the articles which are adapted to be secured to the arms 17.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A folding clothes drying rack, comprising a hollow, hemispherical head having its concavity disposed downwardly and open, the head having radial slots through its margin and pins bridging the slots, ears extending radially from the inner surface of the head between certain of the slots and adj a cent said margin, a ring supported in the With the arm radiating from the head and ears in spaced relation to the inner surface a stanc lard for the head. 10 of the head, an arm disposed in each slot In testimony whereof I afiix my signature and having a slot in which the correspondin the presence of two witnesses.
ing pin is received for pivotal and sliding JOHN T. HUMPHREY. movement of the arm with respect to the Witnesses: head, each arm having a hook at its inner DALLAS M. I-IAZELTON,
end disposed to engage at times the ring WILLIAM OORBIN.
