Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERWIN H. OAKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Inkwell, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fountain ink well and has as one object the provision of an inner and outer receptacle spaced to form a chamber to receive any surplus ink that may be forced out of the inner receptacle through expansion of air therein.
Another object is to provide an elevated bottom on the outer receptacle to extend into the inner receptacle so that all of the ink will flow out of the receptacle without reducing the level in the dip basin attached to the outer casing.
Another object is to provide means for supporting long or short pens in the dip basin A still further object is to provide a pen rack which will accommodate a number of pens and prevent the same from rolling.
l/Vith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel form and arrangement of parts to be more fully described and claimed, it being within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and enhance the utility of devices of that class to which the present invention appertains, it being understood that slight changes may be made in the device without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference there is shown an outer casing 1 which may be made of any desired material and comprising a back 2, front wall 8, and side walls 1. A bottom 5 is spaced above the lower edges of the back, front and side walls and is provided with a raised portion 6 for a purpose to presently appear. The casing 1 is provided with a conical basin 7, the bottom 8 of which is below the upper edge of the bottom 5. The front wall 3 of the casing is provided with a notch 9 which extends from the top of the wall to a point approximately midway between the bottom touch the ink in the basin and become smudged.
An inner receptacle 11 is provided, of any desired material and comprises a top 12, a back 18, a front 14 and sides 15. The top 12 extends over the periphery of the outer casing to form a flange 16 which rests on the said periphery, a stepped portion 17 extends around the flange 16 and spaces the walls of the inner receptacle from those of the outer receptacle to form a chamber 18, for a purpose to be presently alluded to.
The front wall 14: of the inner receptacle is provided with a notch 19 which extends from the top of the wall to the bottom thereof. The front wall being provided at the notch 19 with a thickened portion 20 which engages the front wall 3 of the outer casing and has an opening 21 communicating with the dip basin 7.
Transverse ribs 22 are mounted on the top 12 of the inner receptacle and are provided with notches 23 which form a pen rack when the inner receptacle is disposed within the outer receptacle.
In practical operation, with the inner receptacle filled with ink and mounted in the outer receptacle, ink flows through the opening 21 to the basin, a barometric feed being provided, the ink filling the basin to the level of the upper edge of the opening 21. It is necessary that this opening be elevated above the lower edge of the walls of the inner receptacle, so that ink will flow around the edge of the walls and seal the same to prevent air from passing under the walls into the inner receptacle which would disturb the level of ink in the dip basin.
The raised portion 6 of the bottom 5 of the outer receptacle is on a level with the top edge of the opening 21 so that the same level of ink in the dip basin will be maintained until all the ink has flowed from the ink receptacle to the dip basin.
The air that passes into the inner receptacle and accumulates in the top of the ink compartment as the ink is used will vary in density due to changes in temperature and any expansion of the air in the inner comcare of by the compartment 18. The ink that is forced out of the inner receptacle will flow into the compartment 18 to be later fed to the dip basin.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is 1. An ink Well comprising an outer casing having a bottom and a front Wall the bottom having a raised portion; a dip basin connected with the front Wall, the front Wall having a notch cut through the said wall and communicating With the dip basin; and an inner receptacle mounted in the outer receptacle the raised portion of the bottom of the outer receptacle fitting into the inner receptacle, the inner receptacle having an opening communicating with the dip basin by Way of the notch, the top edge of the notch being on a level with the top of the raised portion.
2. An ink well comprising an outer casing having a bottom, the bottom having a raised portion; a basin carried by the outer casing; and an inner receptacle Within the outer casing the walls of the inner receptacle being spaced from the outer receptacle and cooperating with the raised portion to form an air chamber, the casing and receptacle having cooperating openings communicating with the basin.
3. An ink Well comprising an outer casing; a dip basin carried by the outer casing, the dip basin being provided With stepped bearing faces to receive and support pens a given depth in the ink; and an inner receptacle Within the casing, the casing and receptacle having cooperating openings communicating With the basin.
