To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT M. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparks, in the county of Doniphon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in punches and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature for punching elongated holes in leather for buckles and the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a gage on the punch for regulating the position of the hole in relation to the strip of leather, with means for holding the gage in any desired position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and-one which can be manufactured and placed upon the mar- I ket at a minimum cost.

The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is an elevation of 'the invention V with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.

In these figures 1 indicates one member of the punch and 2 indicates the other member. These members are formed as is usual in devices of this nature, with the curved handle portions, crossing each other and pivoted together as at 3, and then said members are bent in such manner to form the jaw parts 4 and 5. These jaw parts are spaced apart when they are in a closed position for a purpose which will be apparent later. A spring 6 is connected to one member and has engagement with the other member to normally hold the jaws apart. While the members may be formed of any desired shape I prefer to form them of channel iron, as shown in Fig. 1, and the spring has its ends Specification of Letters Patent.

resting in the channels. At the pivotal point said members are cut away so that they over lap each other as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I prefer to form the jaws of solid material and to bend their extreme ends toward each other and at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the punch. .6 indicates an elongated cutting head secured to the end of jaw a while 7 indicates a receiving head, for the cutting head, secured to the end of jaw 5. ment on the jaw 5 and held in any desired position on said jaw by means of the thumb screw 9. This gage is for the purpose of insuring that the hole is punched at the proper point in the leather. By forming the jaw parts so that they will be spaced apart when in a closed position, it will be seen that the top of the gage 8 will not abut or have any association with the jaw part 4 or in any way hinder the operation of the punch.

In using the device the gage 8 is placed at the proper point on jaw 5 and secured therein by the screw 9, the leather is then placed between the jaws and the handles brought together to force the cutting head 6 through the leather. Thus an elongated hole will be made in the leather to receive a buckle or the like.

It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

I claim as my invention:
