HENRI LA BEAU, 0F MONA, MONTANA.
MUSIC-TURNER AND LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
Application filed March 24, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRI LA BEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mona, in the county of Richland and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Turners and Loose-Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates more particularly to a temporary binder for retaining loose leaves, music pamphlets and the like in proper position for convenient reference and combines means whereby the sheets or leaves containing music may be quickly and positively turned so as to obviate any perceptible pause in the playing of a musical composition.
The invention contemplates a binder embodying a cover temporary holding means for the sheets, pamphlets or the like and turning and clamping means for the sheets admitting of the same being instantly turned without causing any appreciable interruption in the execution of a musical piece.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view of a music turner and loose leaf book embodying the invention, showing the same in open position, the dotted lines indicating the leaves or sheets.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the book with the parts arranged as indicated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the book as it appears when closed, the parts being shown on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the book as it appears when open.
Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the clamps for the leaves or sheets.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of a portion of the clamp.
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail of the means for securing the turning arms to the back of the cover.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' and Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
Serial No. 284,720.
The binder or holder comprises a cover 1 and a connecting back 2. These parts may be of any construction and design. To the inner side of the back 2 is secured in any manner a member 3 to which the leaf turnmg members are connected. The member 8 may be of ordinary construction such as gen- .erally provided in temporary binders for loose sheets, pamphlets and the. like. Split rings are connected to the member 3 and are adapted to receive the loose leaves 5 or like parts to be attached to the binder. The split rings 4 are representative of any form of loose leaf holder and the same is true of the member 3 which may consist of a support of any nature to receive the leaf retaining elements 4: and the leaf turning mem are located near opposite ends of the cover so as to clear the leaves, sheets or like parts 5. As shown most clearly in Fig. 1 the arms are disposed so a not to interfere with one another and corresponding arms at the ends of the cover are connected by the clamps 7 so as to move in unison.
The clamps 7 may be of any construction so long as they provide for gripping the outer edge of the leaf or sheet to be turned to connect corresponding arms. As shown each clamp 7 consists of a strip of metal doubled upon itself midway of its longitudinal edges and having its edge portions bent inwardly to form jaws 11 between which the leaf or sheet is adapted to be clipged. The strip from which the clamp is formed is of a length to connect corresponding arms 6, the latter passing through openings formed in the folded portion of the strip, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3 The edges of the jaws 11 are notched to receive the arms 6 and these notches may be errated, as indicated at 12 in Fig. 6 to inure a positive gripping of the arms 6, hereby retaining the clamp in adjusted p0- ition on the arms. Finger pieces 13 are rastened to opposite portions of the clamp and provide means for opening the jaws of the clamp when it is required to place a leaf or like part in position or release the same from the clamp. The operation of the clamp is indicated by the dotted lines in Fi 5.
it will be understood from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the invention provides in one structure means for holding loose leaves and sheets and also for receiving pieces of music and for turning the leaves when playing a musical composition. The finger pieces 13 provide convenient means for manipulating the clamp and also for turning the music leaf holder. The leaves, sheets or the like to be bound between the covers of the device are engaged by the retaining elements 4 and the leaves to be turned have their outer edges engaged between the jaws of the clamp 7 It will thus be understood when playing a piece of music the leaves may be quickly and positively turned, thereby obviating any perceptible pause in the execution. The device also provides for easily and conveniently placing new music or sheets in position and removing old sheets or music not required for immediate reference.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is 1. A combined music turner and loose leaf binder, the same comprising covers con nected by a back, leaf retaining elements applied to the inner side of the back and arms pivotally connected to the back, and leaf engaging means adjustable on and adapted to connect corresponding arms.
2. A combined music turner and loose leaf binder, the same comprising covers connected by a back, leaf retaining elements applied to the inner side of the back and arms pivotally connected to the back, and clamps connecting corresponding arms and provided with jaws which are adapted to grip the arms and hold the clamp in adjusted position and also to grip the outer edges of the leaves to be turned.
3. A music turner and loose leaf book, comprising covers and a connecting back, a support secured to the inner side of the hack, leaf retaining elements carried by the support, posts attached to opposite end portions of the support, pins at the outer ends of the posts, and leaf turning members pivotally mounted upon the pins.
4. A music turner and loose leaf book, comprising covers and a connecting back, a support secured to the inner side of the back, leaf retaining elements carried by the support, posts attached to opposite end portions of the support, pins at the inner ends of the posts, arms pivotally mounted on the pins and clamps connecting corresponding arms.
5. A music turner and loose leaf book, comprising covers and a connecting back, a support secured to the inner side of the back, leaf retaining. elements carried by the support, posts attached to opposite end portions of the support, pins at the inner ends of the posts, arms pivotally mounted on the pins and clamps connecting corresponding arms, each ofthe clamps consisting of a metal strip doubled upon itself and having its longitudinal edge portions inwardly bent to provide jaws between which the arms and the leaves to be turned are gripped.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRI LA BEAU.
