Description
R. M. HAWVES BENDING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 30, 1919- Patented 'Dec. 9, 1919.
INVENTOR Rl/SSLLL M. H4W5 WITNESSES Hilda 4 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT orFIoE.
RUSSELL M. HAWES, OI JEB SEY CITY, JERSEY.
IBENIDING-TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL MtHAVtZES, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of J erse City, in the county of Hudson and State 0 New Jersey, have inventeda new and Improved Bending-Tool, of which the following is 'a full, clear, and exact descrlption.
This invention relates to pipe or rod bend ing devices and has for an object the provision of an improved construction which 1s 1n the nature of a tool so that it may be carried from one place to another and operated to bend a rod or pipe whenever desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bendin tool wherein .the parts are arranged so that the bending action will also act as a gripping'action so that the tool will not slip at any time during its operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a bending tool wherein the clampin hook is moved in such a manner as'to a mit the insertion or removal of a pipe or bar at the side so that a bend may be provided easily atany point along the' bar or pipe.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side View of a bending tool disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section-through Fig. 1 on line 22.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through Fig. 1 on line 3-3.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a slight modified form of the 1nventio Fig. 5 is a rear view of the shown in Fig. 4. I
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a pipe having a tubular fitting 2 secured t 'ereto at one end, said fitting being internally threaded so as to be screwed over the threaded end 3 of the lever 4. This lever is provided with an arm 5 having rounded cam surfaces 6 and 7 for engaging the rounded standlng walls 8 and 9 of the loop 10. This loop 1s preferably formed integral with the sliding bar 11 merging into a hook 12 at the lower end, co-acting with the base plate 13 which base plate is formed with an enlarged bead 13,
structure said bead merging into the base plate so as I Specification of Letters fatent.
lever 4 is moved to bend the pipe 15.
- ceiving a pipe 15. A pivotal pin or bolt 16 ticularly in Figs. 1 and 3, so that whenever this lever is moved the loop 10 and hook 12 are moved in respect to the base. In order to provide a proper back and forth movement the loop 10 extends through a slot 17 whereby the arm 5 is on one side of the base 13 and the bar 11 is on the opposite side. The base 13 is provided with an overhanging shou1der'18 on one side of bar 11 and a lug 19 on the other side whereby additional guiding means are provided coacting with the loop 10 so asto guide the bars 11 and 12 and to take the strain ofi' loop 10 when the Patented Dec. 9, '1919. Application filed June 30, 1919. Serial No. 807,637. I I i It will be noted that a pipe 1 of any desired length may be screwed on to lever 4 so as to secure additional leverage, which may be necessary. It will also be noted that when the lever 4 is being moved for bending pipe 15 hook 12 will be pressed more and more tightly against the pipe 15 whereby slipping cannot take place though a proper bending action may be easily produced.
It will be seen from Fig. 2 that hook 12 is only slightly hook shaped so that the pipe 15 may be bodily removed sidewise and bodily applied, and in fact different sizes of pipe may be bodily applied and removed, thus permitting a ready easy operation of the tool at any point along any pipe or rod. By providing a reciprocation of the bar 11 and hook 12 difi'erent size pipes or rods, within certain limits, maybe readily bent without the adjustment of any of the parts, except where exceptionally small or exceptionally large pipes are to be bent, either exceptionally small or exceptionally large bending tools must be provided, the same, however, conforming to the same general principles involved in the particular size indicated in the drawing.
In Figs. 4 and 5 a slightly modified form of the invention is shown in which'the base plate 20 is provided with a slot 21 through which a pin 22 passes, said pin being threaded into the hook 23. The lever 24 is pivotally mounted at 25 on the base 20 while the arm 26 of the. lever accommodates the bolt 27 which passes through arm 26 and also through the hook 23. By this construction and arrangement the loop 10 is eliminated,
and the various parts are reduced to a inimum while the gripping action between the book 23 and the'bas'e 20 is retained as well as the ability to place pipe into remove the same laterally.
What I claim is: 1. A pipe bending tool comprising a base having an arc-shaped grooved edge, a lever pivotally connected with the base, a'reciprocating hook carried by the base and coacting with the grooved edge thereof, and means connecting the lever with the hook for causing the lever to pull the hook toward a given pointon the grooved edge of the base when moved in one direction so as to grip the pipe and then turn the same as the said slot, said hook member being formed with a loop extending through said slot, and
a lever pivotally mounted on said base member, said lever being formed with an arm projecting through said loop whereby when the lever is moved in one direction the hook,
on the opposite side of said slot to said flange, a bar merging into a hook member arranged to engage flatwise said base beposition and base and norma ly covering said slot, a
looped member connected with said bar extending through said slot, means for guiding said bar as it moves back and forth, and a lever pivotally connected on said base formed with an arm having oppositely positioned cam surfaces for engaging theopposite walls of said looped member whereby as the lever is moved the hook will be moved and when the pipe is engaged b said hook same will be bent by a continued movement of the lever in one direction.
5. A pipe bending tool comprising a base hook arranged adjacent the base coacting with said grooved edge, a lever pivotally mounted on said base, and means for connecting said lever with said hook for reciproeating the same as the lever is moved pivotally so that the hook may be moved to an open position when the lever is in one position, and may be moved to a'closed position when the lever is moved to a second position,
said pipe being bent by a continued movement of the lever in said second position.
