Description
JOHN (1-. G-OT'I'Y, F JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.

No Drawing.
. State of Florida, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Processes for Lining Turpentine-Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a process for lining turpentine barrels or other vessels to prevent leaking, and relates also to a cementing process for closing leaks on the outside of said barrels and other vessels.
It is the common practice at the present time to apply a coating of glue on the inside of the turpentine barrels and, as this g'lue must be applied when hot, it does not eifectively close all the pores and openings in the barrel. The barrels, therefore, must be subjected to several coats of glue to completely close all leaks and these several operations are expensive in the matter of labor, time and material.
The improved process consists in applying the lining coat of glue simultaneously with the tanning solution. The glue is dissolved in water to which there is added the tanning substance and some ammonia alum and strong vinegar or other acid, the proportion of water being enough to hold the composition in solution. The addition there after of a few drops of carbolic acid or some other disinfectant serves to prevent the gluefrom rotting. This preparation is then applied when cold and. it impregnates the woodof which the barrels are made. After drying, the evaporation of a certain proportion of the water leaves the coating in a soft pliable state, as when the glue coating is covered with a tanning substance.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgmgntefl mm 2, 191g, Application filed November 80, 1917. Serial No. 204,702.
This preparation of the glue, together with the tanning solution and with the ammonia alum and Vinegar or some other acid or disinfectant, as aforesaid, is useful for all purposes where glue is required.
.The tanning substance mixed with the glue serves to make the latter more undissoluble, tight and durable, while the am monia alum conserves the glue and in connection with the tanning substance keeps the glue n a more pliable state than would be the case were the tanning substance alone used.
In connection with thisprocess, it is possible to convert the lininsubstance into a cement by the additiono? enough ammonia alum to form a thin paste which may be applied on the outside of the barrel at points where leaks appear. This paste, after having been applied and when set and given a coating of ordinary paint, efi'ectively closes any leak from the outside.
.Having thus fully described this iniaention, what is claimed as new and useful, is:
1. The method of coating barrels and the like which consists in applying to a surface of a barrel a composition of glue and water to which there is added a tanning solution, some ammonia alum, some acid and some disinfectant.
2. The method of closing leaks in barrels and the like which consists in" applying to a part of the surface of the barrel a cement composed of glue dissolved in water, a tanning solution and ammonia alum, and thereafter applying over the cement when set, a coating of paint.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
