IMPROVEMENT IN MATTRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,268, dated October 15, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER ENsooE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Mattress, of which the following is a specification:
A great defect in the mattresses now in use is the'depressing into settled indentations to which they are subject. The object of this invention is to obviate this defect, and to this end consists in a circular section arranged in the middle of the mattress so as tobe capable of being turned round to change its position and thereby equalize the depression all over its surface.
The accompanying drawing represents a top view or plan of a mattress made according to my invention.
A represents the frame of a. bedstead, and B G O the mattress. B is the circular section, before mentioned, and occupies the middle portion of the length of the bed and extends the whole width thereof. It is stuffed and tufted in the usual manner, and forms the body or main portion of the mattress. O O are end pieces which fit between the square ends of the bedstead and the rounded sides of the aforesaid section B. The section B may be stuffed with horse-hair, and the end pieces 0 O with inferior material; or the said section may be furnished with springs and the end pieces be padded.
Mattresses, to obviate the defect above alluded to, have been made with a square section which can be shifted to four different positions to equalize the depression. This, however, is inadequate, -as there will soon settle in the said section four indentations. With a circular section this defect is wholly obviated, for the reason that the section can be shifted to an indefinite number of positions, and thereby enable the depression to be thoroughly equalized over the whole surface. The circular section need not necessarily occupy exactly the center of the mattress, but may be nearer one end than the other, and perhaps it would be preferable that it should occupy a position A mattress having a circular section, essen tially as and for the purpose specified.
