Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application filed February 17, 1919. Serial No. 277,461.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD ANTIEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Rouge, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Button Device, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a button the parts of which may be separated readily, to permit the button to be assembled easily with a garment, and to permit the button to be used repeatedly, novel means being provided for holding the parts of the button.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as. the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a button constructed in accordance with the present invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse Sections of the button, the cutting plane being disposed at right angles to each other in the two figures; Fig. I is a plan of the button; and Fig. 5 is a perspective showing one member of the button detached from the other member thereof.
The button forming the subject matter of this application includes a body 1 provided with a chamber 2, there being a passage 3 in the body 1, leading to the chamber. The outer end of the chamber 2 may be closed by means of a face plate 5 secured to the body 1.
The invention includes a stem 6 carrying a head 7, through which a slot 8 is formed, there being a recess 9 in the head at one end of the slot, a fulcrum piece 10 extending across the slot 8 at the other end thereof.
The numeral 11 denotes a lever comprising a filler 12, around which extends longitudinally, a loop-shaped metal binder 1 1, the bend of the binder receiving the fulcrum piece 10, the fulcrum piece being located between the bend and the corresponding end of the filler 12, the lever 11 thus being fulcrumed at one end so that it may be swung into and out of the slot 8 in the head 7.
In this connection it is to be observed that, as indicated at 25, the lever 11 is beveled at one end, this beveled end of the lever bemg disposed adjacent to the recess 9, and the construction being such that the finger nail of the operator may be inserted under the beveled end of the lever, to permit the lever to be swung upwardly into the dotted line position of Fig. 2. Intermediate its ends, the filler 12 of the lever is supplied with an opening 16 in which the intermediate portion of a U-shaped retainer 17 is pivoted, the retainer including resilient arms 18 terminating in diverging fingers 19. The stem 6 is pointed as shown at 20, to facilitate the insertion of the stem into the passage 3 of the body 1. The stem 6 is supplied with a bore 21 wherein the arms 18 of the retainer 17 are located, there being openings 22 in the stem 6, the openings communicating with the bore, the fingers 19 of the retainer passing outwardly through the openings 22,
In practical operation, when the two parts of the button are connected as shown in Fig. 3, the lever 11 is seated in the slot 8, and the fingers 19 extend into the chamber 2, thus holding the constituent members of the button together. The lever 11 may be swung into the dotted line position of Fig. 2, thus retracting the fingers 19 through the openings 22 into the bore 21 and disengaging the hooks from the rib 4;. Thus, the parts of the button may be separated. When the lever is swung into the slot 8, the fingers 19 will advance through the openings 22 and engage with the rib 4 in a manner which will be understood clearly from Figs. 2 and 3.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A button comprising a body; a stem insertible into the body and having a head; a lever fulcrumed on the head; and a retainer pivoted to the lever, the retainer being slidably mounted in the stem, and being provided at its inner end with a resilient finger cooperating with the body.
2. A button comprising a body having a chamber and a passage leading to the chamber; a stem insertible into the passage and provided with a head; a lever fulcrumed 0n the head; and a U-shaped retainer pivoted intermediate its ends to the lever, the retainer terminating in a resilient finger 00- operating with the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
RICHARD ANTIEAU.
