Description

RAYMND J. 'BRENCKLEy OF MILLVALE, PENNSYLVANIA,
MACHINE FDR CLEANING VEGETABLES.
Toall 'wlw/1i it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMQXD J. 'BEEN-enne.'
a .citizen of the United States, and resident of Millvale, in the county ot lAllegheny `and State oil Pennsylvanie, `have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cleaning 'Yegetables; and I do hereby declare the tolloivino to be e full, clear. and
Y n C exact descriptlon thereof. My invcntlon relates to machines ior cleaning vegetables.
The object of my invention is to provide :i Vsimple and etlicient machine of this character v1n which the vegetables to be cleaned are so handled as not in any wey to injure or bruise the same, ivhile at the same time 'the soil isthoroughly removed Aend the vegetables present e clean and attractive appearance.
To these `ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
ln the drawing, Figure 1 is e plan view of my improved machine; Fig. 2 is an end View; Fig. 3 is "a cross-section; et is en enlarged view of one oic the brushes showing the manner in which the brush is journeled or mounted; Fig. 5 is a section on the line, 5-5, Fig. 1i; end Fig. 6 is e section on the line 6 6, Fig. 4.
n the drawing' the nunieral 2 designates e suitable receptacle or tank, formed of wood or metal as may be desired, seid tank being divided into two compartments 3 end et. by the partition 5 which is provided with the apertures il which torni communication between 'the compartments 3 sind so that Witter introduced into the compartment 3 will pass into the compartment i.
The legs 7 support the tenir 2. llithin the compartment l are the brushes of cleen ing devices 8, and in Fig. 4 l have illus trated in detail the construction of these brushes. It is desired to have these brushes arranged so as to be readily removable either for the purpose of renewal or for changing the brushes for ditiferent kinds of vegetables. Some vegetables will require a stier brush than others, and in Fig. '-1, .l have illustrated in detaii means for the quick removal oi the brushes and for the substitution. of others. At one end of the tank 2 is secured the bearing-'block 9 With.- in which are journaled the bearings 9, said bearings lie-ving the notches or recesses 10 to receive the angular end portions 11 of Specification of Letters :Patent Applicatonle June 23, 191B. vSerial No. 3%,255
Patented Nov. Il, MM2?.
the shafts 12 provided with the collars 13. The angular ends 11 of the shafts l2 are secured within the recesses 10 by cotterpins 14.
The opposite ends of the sliat'ts 12have 'the neck-portions 15 Awhich are adapted to rest inthe semi-circular grooves 16 formed in the bearingbracket 17 secured by' .bolts 18 to the partition 5. The bearingbreeket 17 has the hinged topfglete 19 with semi circular grooves 20 adapted to register With the grooves l16 so that when seid plete 19 is secured in position shown in full lines Fig'. 5, the reduced portions 15 oit the shafts 12 will be joui-nailed to the bracket-brewing so as to rotate freely therein. Any suitable vineens can be employed for holding` the plate 19 in position shown, consisting of the eyebolts 21 which engage thel slots 22 'formed in the 'plate 19. The thumb-nuts are sccured to the upper ends of the eye-bolts.
By this construction. the brushes mounted on hollow sha'lts can be slipped onto the shaft 12 and readily secure/.l in po ion. Jani-nut 25 on the shafts 12 hold the brush securely in position.
The drive-shaft 2G has the pulley 2-7 which may be connected up to any source olf ower, or it' desired an electric motor niay e employed to drive the shaft 2t. 'lll shaft 26 is secured to one o't the beni" i) as indicated in Fig. ei.- The gear-weee 28 on the shaft 2b niesheswvith the Dear Wheel 29 ontiie counter-shaft 3G. in tris manner the brushes 8 are driven in opposite directions.
Splasher-plntes 31 are hinged to tile sides of the compartment end said splaslierplates are arranged in an inclined position, so that when the operator is lieliling the vegetables bet een the brushes the spl .sherplates will protect the opergitor 'from the muddy iveter thrown up by the centrifugal action of the brushes.
In the operation oit my machine, the wege tables to he cleaned :ire introduced into the compartment 3 containingl wetter and the operator picks the vegetables from said com partinent and standing,r et the side of tlie tank inserts the vegetables between the rotilting' brushes i-l, the action of the. brushes together with the Water contained in the coinpertlnent t acts to thoroughly clean tbe vegetables in a rapid and eliicient manner,
and at the saine time Without tearing oli' the in the compartment et becomes too dirty Jfor the washing the plug 32 is removed and the water allowed to run from the tank and the plug is then replaced and a new supply of Water introduced to the tank 3.
It is apparent that lin some cases it may be desirable to remove the dirt in a dry state and in such a case no water will be employed in the tank.
What I claim is:
1. In a vegetable cleaner, the combination of a receptacle for containing water, a pair of parallel brushes arranged therein, means for rotating said brushes i'n`v opposite direction, and a hinged splasher-plate along the side of said receptacle, and extending at f an angle inwardly over` the saine.
2. In a vegetable cleaner, the combination of a receptacle for containing Water, a pair of parallel brushes arranged therein, means for rotating said brushes in Opposite direchand.
tion, and hinged splasherfplates secured to the opposite sides of said receptacle extend ing inwardly and at an angle over saine.
3. In a vegetable cleaner, the combination of a receptacle, bearings on the inside of said receptacle having recesses formed there in, shafts having angular ends adapted to i engage said recesses, means for securing lsaid shafts therein, portable bearings at Jche RAYMUND J.
