To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WILEY ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottsville, inthe county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Heat-Regulating and FueLSaving Attach ments for Heaters of Various Kinds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel automatic heat regulating and fuel saving attachment for heaters of various constructions and types.
The main object of the invention is to provide an unusually simple, economical, novel and thoroughly efiicient self-regulating attachment for heaters of various kinds which will readily demonstrate its automatic draft regulating and fuel saving qualities.
A further object of this invention isto so construct my improved attachment that itmay be easily secured to or be formed integral with the outer casing of various types of stoves, furnaces and heaters, and will be automatically operated by the increased air inlet current and gravitation, or by the increased or decreased atmospheric pressure which is occasioned by the increased or decreased intensity of the heat inside of the stove or heater, together with gravity, thereby preventing the heater or stove from being overheated and also from getting too cold, thereby saving the time and trouble of having to frequently turn on and off the draft dampers, as is now customary with the ordi nary devices employed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel attachment which may be constructed of sheet or cast metal of any suitable size, shape or thickness, that will be readily capable of meeting the required conditlons of the stove, furnace or heater to which it may be attached.
Another object of this invention is to con-,
struct my novel attachment in the form, of a hinged door provided with means for holding the loosely suspended dampers in a closed position, thus making said dampers partially or wholly inactive. V
The foregoing and such other objects as may appear from the ensuing description are accomplished by the novel features of construction, combination, location and arrangement of the parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, it being understood that slight changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inventlon.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the specification, it will be seen that:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, showing a portion of a stove or heater with the novel attachment embodying my invention secured thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing a portion of a heater with the attachment hinged thereto Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the heater casing with a slightly modified form of my novel attachment.
F ig, 4 is a similar view, showing a slight modification of the attachment, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, showing another slight modification of the attachment.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out this invention as illustrated, the numeral 1 designates the outer casing of any suitable or desirable type or construction of stove, furnace or heater, and attached to said casing, preferably at a point below the grate 2, by rivets, bolts or suitable hinges 3, or formed integral therewith, is the attachment 4 provided with a flanged portion 5 by which the attachment is riveted, bolted, or it may be in the form of a door suitably hinged to the stove casing, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and formed integral with the attachment 4, extending inwardly near its upper end, is a shouldered portion 6, terminating in a depending member 7, said portion 6 and member 7 extending en tirely across the recessed portion 8 of the attachment, and secured to the lower end of the member 7 by a rule joint or suitably pivoted at 9 is an adjustable and detachable wall'or diaphragm 10, provided with openings 11 for the free passage of air therethrou h, said wall 10 having an outwardly extending flange 12 formed integral with the bottom ortion thereof, with a slotted opening 13 t erethrough adapted to receive a threaded thumb crewl having a securing nut 15 fitted on its threaded end for, firmly fastening the wall 10 in its suitably adjusted position to the inwardly and upwardly inclined or curved lower wall 16,
which terminates at its inner end with or Z pended from the lower face of the shouldered portion 6 by S-shaped supports 18, or
by any other suitable ordesirable means, are
a plurality of dampers 18 adapted to swing perpendicularly with respect to the wall 10,
to allow the free passage of air through the openings in the said adjustable wall, when not closed automatically by the atmospheric pressure, or by the'closure fastening means hereinafter described.
Pivotally supported by the integral bearings or socket portions 19 formed on the outer face of the attachment is a swinging bail 19 havin a weighted portion 20, adapted to counterbalance and cause the depending portion 21 of the bail to engage the outer face of the loosely suspended dampers and securesaid dampers in their closed position when desired, thereby making said dampers partially or entirely inactive, and formed integral with the outer face of the attachment is a socket 22 or other suitable means for holding the bail in its disengaged or released position, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In the slightly modified form of the 'attachment-shown in Fig. 3 it will be seen that the attachment is secured to the heater by suitable means, and depending from the inner portion thereof and formed integral with its upper wall 2'3 is a depending member 24,: to which is secured the detachable and adjustable wall in the manner hereinbefore described, the bail 19 being suitably supported 'by the depending bearings 25,
' formed at the outer end portion of the attachsment, and the inner lower face of the attachment is formed on a curve 26 with a radius usingthe point 9- as a center, said attachment being provided with a main air draft pening 27 having a suitable cover 28,
and a downwardly and inwardly inclined member 29 serving to direct and guide the f passage of the air within the heater, the
dampers being loosely suspended by suitable means depending from the lowersurface of the top portion of the attachment.
By reference tothe' modified form shown in Fig. 4 it will be perceived that my attachment is provided with a downwardly and inwardly sloping-or inclined face ortion 30 pended from the top portion and adapted to swing perpendicularly with respect to the outer faceof the' attachment and the wall 32, the bail 19' being supported in any suitable or desirable manner for the purpose hereinbefore referred to, and the upper portion of the attachment having an opening 35 therethrough for the direct draft, provided with a suitable cover 36. v
The modification shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings shows a simple door 37 suitably hinged to the casing of a heater in a downwardly and inwardly inclined or sloping position, and to the upper portion of which is secured a plurality of loosely suspended dampers which are adapted to swing'perpendicularly with'respect to said door, so as to allow. the free passage of air through the openings 38 formed therethrough when not closed by atmospheric pressure or held closed by the depending portion 21 of the bail, which is carried by the door in any suitable or desirable manner. 1 It-will be readily perceived that, although I have shown and described a plurality of dampers, a single damper loosely suspended substantially inthe manner described may be employed in connection with my novel attachment such as herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An automatic heat regulating attachdampers loosely suspendedontheouter face,
of the attachment and adapted to open and close said openings, said dampers being exposed to the outer air.
2. A device of the character described .comprisin an attachment. secured to a Hill heater, sald attachment having a .downwardly and inwardly inclined adjustable and detachable wall provided at its bottom with a slotted extension, means'for securing said wall in its adjusted position, and a plurality of loosely suspended dampers supported at-the front of said wall adapted to swing with respect to said Wall.
3. A device of the character described comprising an attachment secured to a heater, said attachment having a downwardly inclined adjustable and removable wall provided at its bottom with a slotted extension, means for securing said wall in its adjusted position, a plurality of loosely suspended automatically'operated dampers supported'at the front of said wall adapted to swing with respect to the wall, and means for securing said dampers in their closed position.
4. A device of the character described comprising an attachment secured: to a heater, said attachment having a down wardly and inwardly inclined adjustable and removable wall provided at its bottom with a slotted extension, an inward and upward curved portion near the bottom ofthe attachment, means carried by said curved portion for securing said wall in its adjusted osition, a plurality of loosely suspended automatically operated dampers supported wardly and inwardly inclined adjustable and removable wall provided with a plurality of openings therethrough, and a slotted extension at the bottom thereof, means for securing said wall in its adjusted position, means for securing the dampers in their closed position and for releasing them, and
means for securing the damper securing means in its released ppsition.
\ 6. A device of the character described comprising an attachment secured to a heater, said attachment consisting of a downwardly and inwardly inclined wall provided with a plurality of openings therethrough, and a slotted extension at the bottom thereof, means for securing said wall in its proper position, a plurality of loosely suspended automatically operated dampers supported at the front of the-wall, swinging means for holding the said dampers in their closed position, and means for securing said swinging means.
7. A device of he character described comprising an attachment secured to 'a heater, said attachment consisting of a downwardly and inwardly inclined wall provided with a plurality of openings therethrough, and a slotted extension at its bottom, an inward and upward curved portion near the bottom thereof, means carried by the curved portion and fitted in the slotted position, a plurality of loosely suspended automatically operated dampers supported at the front of the wall adapted to swing with respect to the wall, means for securin said dampers in theirclosed position, an
