ELLIS L. RICHARD, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN.
BELT-CUTTER.
Application filed May 16, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELLIS L. RICHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the `county ot Muskegon and State ot Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in `Belt-Cutters, ot which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to an improved means Jfor cutting leather strips.
An object ot the invention is to produce a manually operated cutting device :for this purpose wherein a belt or leather strip may be accurately cut in an easy and expeditious nianner.
A further object of the invention is to produce a belt cutting device wherein the cutting blade will operate in a direct line with the bed plate.; wherein `the cutting blade is removably and adjnstably secured upon the operating handle; wherein the bed plate is integrally formed with a1 guide for the belt to be cutand the said guide is `provided with means to which the handle for the cutting blade is pivotally attached.
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature ot the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 isa perspective view of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig.` 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bed ends with a handle extension 4, and on its other endwith a lug 5 that terminates in an eye 6. On the straight end ofthe bed that-is formed with the handle is secured, preferably by bolts 7 a removable guide plate 8. Pivotally secured as at 9 to the outstandingr eye 6 `is the angle end 10 of the Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4l, 1919.
Serial No. 297,592.
handle member 11 for the knife. The handle l1 has its outer face, tor a portion of its length flat as at 12 and the said fiat portion is arranged directly in a line with one ot the straight sides 1.3 ot the bed plate 1. The straight portion of the handle is provided with spaced transverse openings 14 which register with similar openings 15 in the upper edge ot the cutter blade 16. Passing through the openings 15 and 141 are bolts 17 that are engaged by nuts 18. The cutting edge ot the blade 16, indicated for distinction by the numeral 19 has its rear portion arranged at an upward angle as indicated by the numeral 20. The openings 2 may be provided for securing the bed to a suitable support. The angle end of the cutting' edge of the blade permits of a shearing cut to the leather to be operated on. The leather has one of its edges arranged against the guide plate S, and the cutting blade being positioned at a true right angle with respect to the guide plate, a proper right angular cut of the leather will be assured.
The construction is extremely simple, and it is thoughtthat the advantages and operation thereof will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detailed descripnear one of the sides of the bed plate, a lug extending from the opposite end and dise posed near one of the sides of the. said bed plateand said lng terminating in an eye, a removable guideplate on the irst mentioned end of the 'bed plate, a handle having an angle end pivotally connected to the eye, said handle including a straight portion that is arranged parallel with and directly over one of the edges of the bed plate, a cutting blade removably secured to the handle and disposed in contacting relation with the referred to side of the bed plate, and the cutting edge of the said blade, at the rear portion thereof being' arranged at an upward angle, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atiiX my signature.
