Description

A syrum. Improvement in Window-Shutters. No. 132,001. Patented 0m '8, 1972.
QWW z? UNITED STATES ALVIN S. FLINT, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WlNDOW-SHUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,001, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALVIN S. FLINT, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inVVindowShut ters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a view of awindow supplied with my shutters, the vertical flap thereof drawn up above the window; Fig. 2 is a view of the same with the vertical flap down to the level of the window and shut down-the two horizontal flaps opened; Fig. 3 is a view of the same with the flaps adjusted into an awning for the window; and Figs. 4 and 5 are detached views of the .auxiliary flaps which form'part of the horizontal flaps.
The object and purpose of the invention are the production of window-shutters which shall serve the purpose of common shutters, and shall serve other purposes, which will be apparent as this specification proceeds.
The letters a indicate the bearing-rods on which all the flaps are hung, and they may be simply the length of the window or may extend above or below it. These rods are fastened to the house. The letter 1) indicates what I term the vertical flap hinged to the crossbar a, so that it may swing outfrom the window. Besides this vertical flap there are horizontal flaps (Z d hinged to the rods 01, which, when closed together, cover that part of the window not covered by the vertical flap. Upon the ends of the flaps d d are hinged the auxiliary flapse e, the hinges thereof being so constructed that the flaps e 0 may be readily detached from the flaps d at when desired. All of these flaps may be provided with blinds, as indicated in the drawing. The cross-bar 0 slides by its ends upon the bearingrods and the vertical flap may be secured in the position shown in Fig. 1 by the button f.
When the flaps d d are closed, as shown in Fig. 1, and the vertical flap let down upon them, the whole window is covered, and the upper or the lower part of the window may be readily uncovered by obvious adjustment of the vertical or the horizontal flaps. These flaps may be adjusted to form an awning by swinging out the flap b, as shown in Fig. 3, and it may be supported by the pawl g. If it is desired to have sides to this awning the flaps d (I may be elevated, as in Fig. 3, and supported in position by the hooks h h. In order to have the sides of the awning extend to the end of the vertical flap the auxiliary flaps e 0 may be attached to the flaps d d, and they can be locked so as to swing with the flaps d d by means of bolts 6 e. A greater length can be given to the flaps d d e c if desired, and in such case these flaps may be made to extend somewhat below the bottom of the window.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the flap b and flaps (Z d hinged as described, and arranged to cover the whole of the window when closed.
2. The combination of the flap b, pawl g, and flaps d d sliding on the rods a, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the flap b, pawl g,
flaps d d, and flaps e e, constructed, arranged,
and operating substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the flap b hinged to the cross-bar c and the rods to a, and arranged to operate substantially as described.
A. S. FLINT.
