Be it known that I, Enivstr Gr. HIELANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, lVlahoning county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Condensers, Of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beillg had to the acco1npanying drawings, forming part of t-his specification, in which- Figure 1 is a ,vertical section of a condenser embodying my invention, and

My invention has relation to improvements in condensers, and more particularly to jet condensers of the counter-current type.
The object of 1ny invention is to provide a condenser having means whereby the largest possible area of water surface will be exposed to the action of the incoming steam, while at the same time permitting a maximum volume of cooling water to be used economically in a condenser of a given size.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown a preferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes can be made in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of the parts without departng from the spirit and Scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings the numeral 2 desig- .nates the main conclensing Chamber having the steam inlet pipe 8, the water supply pipe 4, and pipe connection 5 leading to an air pump or other suction apparatus, in the usual manner. 6 indicates the tail pipe.
Placed below the discharge opening of the water inlet pipe t is a baffle consisting of a horizontal portion 7 and a vertical portion 8 at the farther end of the horizontal portion, there being a free space or passage 9 between the outer wall of the ohamber :2 and Said vertical portion 8. The horizontal portion 7 has formed tl1erein a plurahty of water distributing slots 10' which are arranged in fan-like form, being separated from each other b-y greater distances at the ends thereof adjacent to the water inlet than at the opposite ends. 11 designates a second baffle placed above the steam inlet connection 8 and also consisting of EL horizontal and a vertical portion, there being a free Space or passage 19 between the vertical portion and. the outer wall of the condenser. The horizontal portion of the battle 11 is also formed with a plurality of through slots 13 arranged in fan-like form, but reversoly to the slots 10. That is to say, the slots 13 are separated by greater distances at the ends adjacent to the steam inlet than at their opposite ends, the steam inlet being shown as being at the opposite side Of the condenser from the water inlet. The baillie 11 is also provided with the oblique downwardly and inwardly extending deflector projection 14 which 'is in the path of a portion of the incoming steam. 5
In the water distributing arrangements heretofore generally in use in condensers of this type, the water falls in the form of a cone whose surface is exposed to the action of the incoming steam. Such a cone does not expose a very large Surface of water, and the steam that is not immediately condensed has to force its way upward. to meet the falling water at a higher level. This has a tendency to limit the amount of water that may be used to advantage in the conclenser, since if the water falls in a compact mass the steam cannot readily Work its way through. By my improved distributng arrangement, 1 *at once expose the largest possible surface of water to the incoming stea1n which is deflected downwardly by the Projection 14- By reason of the fan-like arrangement of the water clistributing slots, very little resistance is offered to the incoming steam at the first contact, after which the distances or open spaces between the slots becomes contracted, thereby acting to force the particles of Steam close up to the falling Sheets of water before the water reaches the free passage 19. The unconclensed Steam and uncondensable vapor passes upward through the passage 12 and again meets the upper series of falling Sheets of water from the slots 10. The residue passes upwarclly through the passage 9 and thence to the air outtake. As the steam passes underneath the upper 'baifle 7 t again at first meets with a minimum of resistance, due to the greater distance separating the upper series of slots 10 at that side of the condenser, but as t passes toward the passage 9 there is a further action tending to force tho particles of steam closely between the falling Sheets of water before the steam can escape said passage 9.
My invention very greatly increases the efiiciency of the condenser and provides a simple construction by which a maximum amount of cooling water can be run through a condenser of a given diameter thus decreasing the size and cost of the condensing vessel required. I have also found that there is practically no loss in Vacuum between the part of the condenser where the air enters and the top where the air is taken off. Friction losses in the condenser are also small. The vertical portions of the water distributers provide means where'by water may collect on the distributers to a sutiicient depth to form a proper head for forcing the cooling water through the slots.
I claim:
1. A counter-current condenser having a Steam inlet pipe which enters the concenser vessel horizontally, and also having a cornloined baftle and water container forming in effect a continuation within the vessel os: the upper wall of said pipe said baille and container having an upturned free edge at the side opposite the Steam inlet, and also having a plurality Of water-distributing slots which converge toward each other in a fan-like arrangement in a direction away from the steam inlet pipe there being a free npward passage between the np-tarned edge of the balile and the adjacent wall O'i" the condenser vessel, the condenser also having another similar baille above the lirst named one and placed oppositely thereto so.
