Be it known that I, Oris D. BELL, a citizenv of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Garment-Pockets, of which the following is a description.

My invention while serviceable in connection with gari'nent pockets generally, is more particularly intended for use in connection with the pockets of fur garments. In the case of fur garments owing to the comparative weakness of the skin, it is extremely liable totear at the corners. Not

' only so, but the strain'on the pocket by pressure of the hand or by the forcing of articles into the pocket or the cverweighting of the same is liable to produce a tear or .rupture in the skin above and more or less distant from the pocket.

.The general objectV of my invention is to provide .means for reinforcing the pocket at the corners in such a manner that strain on the pocket will not be applied at the stitched corner of the pocket but at points inward from the stitched corners, the reinforcing means serving to take up the strain or pressure applied to the pocket. The stated object is attained by reinforcing means of such a character that when applied to the garment at the opposite stitched thereof, they will produce corners inward from the 'actual corners.

More specifically, the invention has for an object to produce a reinforcing device of simple form which may be unfailingly disposed in proper position and then be securely fastened by stitching.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.

ln order to reinforce the corners of thev pocket and prevent tearing at the stitched corners a, l apply tothe pocket at the opening, at each corner a, a reinforcing means which in the preferred form consists of a stamped metal element l() having upper and lower arms l1 substantially parallel and spaced to present a longitudinal Islot l2 therebetween, said slot being adapted to snugly accommodate two thicknesses of the pocket material at the slit or opening thereof.V The device is applied by sliding it on the corner of the pocket at the interior of the garment and with the respective arms l1 lying above and below the pocket opening. Any suitable means may be provided for` fastening` the reinforcing elements l() in position, said elements in the present example each having slots to receive the stitches, the arms ll having elongated stitched slots 13 therein while the outerend or back has a slot 13 therein at right angles Y to the slots 13. By providing the slots, an

opening can readily be found for the needle, thereby promoting convenience in stitching as at C the reinforce in position as best seen in Fig. 8. Thus, the arms ll of the respective reinforce elements l0 will be disposed laterallyvinward, that is to say. the arms of one element lO will be disposed toward and opposite to the arms of the other element at the opposite corner.

It will be seen that with the reinforce in position at each side of the pocket opening, the actual stitched corner a is at the base or inner end of the slots 12, and also the terminals of the arms lvl result in a produced corner laterally inward from the actual corner, whereby the pressure of the hand or the strain of articles being forced into the pocket, will not be effective at the actual corners a of the pocket opening `but will be taken up at the produced corners resulting from the terminals of the arms 11. Thus, it would become necessary before a strain could be eXerted on the actual corners a that a force or pressure be applied to the pocket sufficient to disrupt or distort the reinforcing means. Not only so, but the strain due to pressure on the pocket will be taken up by the described reinforcing means and the strain will be distributed over a wider area of the fur above the pocket instead of unduly straining a given local point or line of the garment so that a tearing of the latter above the pocket as not infrequently occurs at present, is practially made impossible.

I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. The combination with a garment having a pocket, of means applied to the garment and presenting stiE spaced arms above and below the pocket opening adjacent to each corner and forming produced corners at said opening laterally inward from the actual corners and determining the effective width of the pocket.

2. The combination with a garment having a pocket, of a reinforcing element applied to the garment adjacent to each corner of the pocket opening, said elements each including a pair of arms presenting a slot therebetween adapted to accommodate the material of the pocket so that the actual corner thereof is between said arms, adja cent to the junction between the arms, with the free ends of the arms forming produced corners and determining the effective width of the pocket.

3. A reinforcing means for garment pockets, said means including separate elements adapted to be applied tothe garment at the respective corners of the pocket openings and being slotted to accommodate the actual pocket corner and the material of the pocket the material of the pocket at the corner may v be snugly accommodated, whereby the arms will lie respectively above and below the pocket opening, said device having means whereby to secure it in position on the garment, and the arms presenting free terminals so close as to maintain the material at the-top and bottom of the pocket close together to result in produced corners defining the effective width of the pocket.

ing a pocket, of means applied to the garment to reinforce the pocket and-including stiif elements above and below the pocket opening at the corners thereof, and extending toward each other beyond the actual corners of the pocket, said members presenting free terminals producing corners beyond the actual corners of the pocket and determining the effective width of the pocket.
