To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELARY L. HEARN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and tate of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in guns, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use as a toy, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved gun wherein an elastic member is employed for ejecting the projectile.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a gun of this general character provided with novel and improved means whereby the projectile is effectively held in applied position relative to the ejecting member during the working stroke of said member.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved gun whereby certain important ad vantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View partly in side elevation and partly in section of a gun constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my in vention;

Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the portion broken away in my improved gun as herein embodied; and

Fig. 3 is a view in bottom plan of the plunger 01' driver as herein employed detached, the coacting elastic member being shown in fragment.

The front end portion of the stock S is provided with a slot 2 in communication with the groove 1 and in which is arranged a trigger T. The trigger T is angular in form to provide a downwardly extending portion 3 and a forwardly extending por tion 4. The portion 3 is of a length to terminate below the under edge of the barrel so that the same may be readily engaged by a finger.

The trigger T is mounted for rocking movement upon a pin 5 intersecting the up per portion of the slot 2 and directed through the heel portion of the trigger T. The forward or free end portion of the extension 4 is provided with an upwardly extending detent lug 6 and a downwardly extending lug 7. The lug 7 is engaged within an end portion of a coil spring 8 seated within a recess 21 at the forward end of the slot 2, and which spring 8 serves to constantly urge the outer or free end portion a of the trigger upward.

Connected to the forward end portion of the barrel 1 is an elastic member 10 herein disclosed as an elastic cord doubled upon itself and having its end portions secured to the forward end portion of the barrel and having the bight of the cord disposed through a plunger or driver 11. The plunger or driver 11 travels in the groove 1 and the forward end portion of the plunger or driver 11 is formed with a cup-shaped recess 12.

The under face of the plunger or driver 11 is provided with a longitudinally disposed channel 14 intersected by a metallic strap 15 or the like which affords a tooth adapted to be engaged with the detent lug 6 of the trigger T.

Extending transversely through the barrel B adjacent the forward end of the stock S is a pin 16 which extends beyond the opposite faces of the barrel B and which coacts with the strands of the elastic member 10 for limiting the forward movement of the plunger or driver 11. As is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, the elastic member 10 extends under the extremities of the pin. 16. I

My improved gun is to be particularly adapted for use iii connection with a shaft 17 or like projectile, and the projectile is disposed within the groove 1 with an end portion thereof sea-ted within the recess 12 when the plunger or driver 11 is retracted and held by the trigger T.

In order that the projectile 17 may be held within the groove 1 for a discharge in the event the gun is upwardly directed or should be held in a lateral position which would otherwise result in a displacement of the projectile, a shield or supplemental barrel 18 is employed.

The barrel 18 is preferably constructed of metal and is substantially semircircular in cross section. The opposite ends of the shield or barrel upon the opposite sides thereof are provided with wings or extensions 19 which partially overlie the side faces'of the stock S and the barrel B and are secured thereto by any suitable fastening members 20. The wings or extensions 19 are of such a length as to space the intermediate portion of the shield or barrel 19 from the grooved face of the barrel whereby the longitudinally disposed slots 21 are produced and through which extend the oppo site end portions of the pin 23 disposed through the plunger 11. This pin 23 is positioned transversely of the plunger and is secured frictionally and detachably in place. It is obvious since the pin is so fixed to the plunger, that it may be easily removed, and by detaching the forward part of the clastic member 10 and disconnecting it from the plunger, the plunger may be easily removed from the rear end or forward end of the barrel, without removing the part 18. The extremities of the pin afford finger grips whereby the requisite retraction of the plunger or driver 11 may be effected.

The shield or barrel 19 is of a length to extend from a point rearwardly of the trigger T to a point in advance of the pin 16 so that the projectile will be properly held Within the groove 1 during the firing stroke of the plunger or driver 11.

From; the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a gun constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my inventionis susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein disclosed in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim: V

1. In -a device as set forth, a gun body having an elongated groove extending longitudi nally of the upper face of the body, a sheet means connecting the forward end of the body and the plunger, whereby the plunger may be operated for firing a projectile from the chamber.v

2. In a device as forth, a gun body having an elongated groove extending longitudinally of the upper face of the body, a sheet metal elongated member semi-circular in cross-section positioned longitudinally of the body and having its longitudinal edges spaced from the opposite portions of the uper grooved face, means for connecting the member to the body to hold same so spaced, thereby providing a firing plunger receiving chamber, a plunger in said chamber, said chamber'being open at both encls,whereby the plunger may be removed from the rear end, and an elastic means connecting the forward end of the body and the plunger, whereby the plunger may be operated for firing a projectile from the chamber, and a pin extending transversely of and frictionally through the plunger and'between the edges of the member and the upper face portions on opposite sides of the groove, for retaining the plunger in the chamber, and means for holding the plunger in firing position, said pin being removable to permit the plunger to be removed from the rear end of the chamber.
