Description

C.'COHAN.
CHORD STRIKING MECHANISM FOR CHIME CLOCKS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29. 1918.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES COHAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOTR TO THE HERSCHEDE HALL CLOCK COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CHORD-STRIKING- MECHANISM FOR CHIME-CLOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Application filed May 29, 1918. Serial No. 237,223.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CoHAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chord- Striking Mechanism for Chime-Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to produce an improved chord striking mechanism for striking the hour in chime clocks, in which the notes of the chord to be struck may be varied as desired.
A further object is to produce a chord striking mechanism in which each of the hammers of the notes of the chord to be struck will strike its [bell with the same intensity each successive time the chord is struck.
These and other objects are attained in the mechanism described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which discloses a portion of a chime clock having a chord strike mecha nism embodying my invention.
In my invention I provide brackets 1 and 2 at the ends of the bar 3 which pivotally mounts the levers 4 which are operated by the pins 5 on drum 6 and which are connected with the chime hammers (not shown) by means of strings 7. In these bracket I rotatively mount a square shaft 8 upon which a series of lever operating finger 9 are adjustably mounted by means of set screws 10 located preferably in the bottoms of the fingers; Attached to the end of shaft 8 is a crank arm 11 which is connected by means of a link 12 with a crank 13 through which the mechanism between clock plates 14 and 15 operates to cause fingers 9 to push levers 4 back and thus retract the hammers from the bells ready for the chord striking movement of the levers as soon as the crank 13 is released.
Because of the adjustability of the fingers upon the shaft 8, they may be secured in po sition to operate upon any one of the levers 4 to thus change the notes of a chord to be struck, as desired.
In addition to this, the mounting of the fingers upon shaft 8, rigidly connects all of them so that all of the levers operated by them are drawn back simultaneously without relative movement between them. This causes the chord notes to be struck with uniformity and simultaneously.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A chord striking mechanism for chi-me clocks, consisting of a series of hammer operating levers, a series of a smaller number of fingers adapted to operate selected ones of the levers, a shaft rotatively mounted adjacent to the levers, means adapted to mount the fingers adjustably upon the shaft to secure them in position to operate all of the levers selected, and means adapted to rotate the shaft.
2. A chord striking mechanism for chime clocks, consisting of a series of hammer operating levers, a lever carrying bar, a series of a smaller number of fingers adapted to operate a selected number of the levers, a shaft, brackets extending from the bar, adapted to mount the shaft rotatively, set screws adapted to mount the fingers adjustably upon the shaft opposite the selected levers, and means for rotating the shaft.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27th day of May, 1918.
CHARLES COHAN. Witness:
W. THORNTON BOGERT.
