Description

W. F. THOMPSON.
NECKTIE SUPPORT.
APPLICATION man FEB. 8.1919.-

INVENTQR.
WILLIAM THOMPSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTIE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1919.
Application filed February 8, 1919. Serial No. 275,760.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. THOMP- soN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 2110 Summer street, Philadelphia in the-count of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Supports, of which the following is a specification. e 4
The invention relates to apparel devices and more particularly to neck tie devices, and has for an object to provide a simple holder or support for a neck tie to secure the same in position at the front of a collar and prevent undue sidewise or upward or down ward movement thereof, and also secure and hold the tie in a graceful position relative to the collar.
The invention comprehends among other features, the provision of a neck tie support which is preferably formed ofa single piece of material suitably fashioned for attachment to the usual stud or collar button, which holds the collar at the'front, the device by reason of its formation and disposition, holding the neck tie against any sidewise movement or from slipplng up or down and also retaining the neck tie in a graceful position, it eing understood that these func- 80 Jiwpply at the point where the knot of the neck tie is made, and which is usually at the front of the collar between the two outer flaps thereof.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, cation, in which similar characters of reference'denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,
Figure 1-is a vertical sectional view taken through a collar and shirt with a neck tie, and my device shown in side elevation, the device being in applied position.
Fig. 2-is a front elevation of the device.
Fig. 3.is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 4-is a plan view.
Fig. 5is a similar view showing the device applied, and,
. Fig. 6-is a front elevation of a slightly modified form.
Referring more particularly to the views, the numeral 10 indicates a shirt, the numeral 11 the collar band thereof, and the numeral 12, a collar, a collar button 13 being provided to pass through the collar band 11 at the front and also through the collar constituting a part of this specifi- 12 to secure the collar in position on the shirt. A tie 14.- of the usual four-in-hand.
variety, is shown applied to the collar in the usual manner. 1
. My'invention as set forth in Figs. 1 to 6 incluslve, comprises a single piece of material preferably a'heavy grade of wire and indicated by the numeral 15, said piece of material being bent at its medial portion to form a button receiving loop 16 and then bent to form stem portions 17 forming a shank, after which the piece of material has the portions 17, bent in opposite directions upon themselves to form upwardly extending sides 18 which terminate in downwardly projecting arms 19, the termini of which are bent upwardly and inwardly to form gripplng elements 20. By reference to Fig. 3,
it will be seen that at the point of formation of the side portions 18 with the stem port1ons'17, said side portions 18 are bent slightly backward or rearward so that the loop 16 and shank formed by the stem port1on 17 Wlll lie in advance of the sides 18, this formation being also shown in the plan View in Fig. 2.
Now by reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that in applying the device, the same is sprung over the projecting front end, of the collar button 18 and then suitably manipulated to brlng 1t 1nto a position immediately behind the knot 14;, of the tie. It will be noted that in this operation, the rear faces of surfaces of the sides 18,'pres sing against theoollar 12 together with the engagement of the loop 16 w1th the collar button, will force the loop 16 and stem portion17, rearwardly into the vertical plane of the sides 18 and this operation causes gripping elements 20 to be moved closer together so that the pointed portions thereof will grip into the tie and thus hold the same rigidly. This operation is clearly shown in Figs. 1, 4, 5, and on reference to- Fig. 4, it will be seen that when the device is by ltself the gripping elements 20 are spaced a certain distance apart, whereas the application of the device to the collar button and collar, will move said gripping eleilnentg closer together, as clearly set forth in With this device it will be seen that the tie will now be held against any side-wise movement and also be held from slipping upwardly or downwardly relative to the collar; further the device will eflectively hold the knot of the tie in a sort of forwardly bulging position, which arrangement is found to be highly desirable, particularlyin connection with certain forms and shapes of collars, thus greatly enhancing the appear- I of my invention, in which instead of having only one loop 16, I form a blank to form a I plurality of loops 16, 16'. With this ar- I and it will be noted t rangement the tie can be secured toward the lower portion of the collar or if desired, can
be held near the top portion of the collar, at I also disclose in Fig. 6, slightly difl'erent forms of gripping elements 20*, which instead of 1:erm1nat-' ing in pointed portions are formed with knobs 20 7 From the foregoing description it will be clearly apparent that the tie support described can be cheaply manufactured, being formed of a single piece of wire-like material, and that it can be readily applied to effectively accomplish the purpose for which it is desired. I
Hayi'ng described m invention, I claim,- As 'a new article 0 manufacture, a neck tie support comprisin' a single piece of mat rial bent at its me 1al portion to form a loop, and having portions bent downwardly to form a shank, said piece of material then being bent upon itself slightly rearward to form side portions extending upwardly and then 'bent forwardly and downwardly to form arms terminating in upwardly and slightly relatively inclined gripping elements.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature.
