IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS.l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,816, dated October l, 1872.
To all lwhom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, FELICE FAERICI, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented 'a newand Improved Head-Rest for Gar-Seats, of which the following is a specilication:
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved head-rest for car-seats. Fig. 2 is a side ele- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable headrest to be applied to the backs of railroadlcar seats for increasing the comfort of the passengers. The invention consists in the combination of notched standards which are applied by spring-jaws to the seat-backs with a head-rest having projecting pins that are supported in the notchesof the standards. A A in the drawing are` the two head-rest standards. Their lower ends are bifurcated and yielding, the springs `ci a being either single, These forked springs serve The upper parts of the standards are notched at regular intervals. B` is a cushion of suit*v able size and shape. It has projecting pins b b at the sides, and is by them supported in the notched standards, as shown, and can be set higher or lower inthe notches to suit the` height of the person using it. The dotted lines in Fig. 2 show a third spring attached to the double spring a, which, however, may be dispensed with, as well as the outer second spring a. A brace, d, is pivoted to the back of one of the standards A and hooked over a projecting pin on the other standard, and
serves to hold the standards the requisite distance apart, allowing them, however, to be conveniently folded together when the headrest is not to be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim `as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the cushion B and pins b b with the notched standards A A, so constructed at their lower ends as to embrace a chair or seat-back, as specified.
2. The pivoted hook brace d, in combination with the standards A A, and a cushion supported thereby, substantially as specified.
