Description

' rinnna (zoomen-on rrrrsnrnnn, Mn'ssnonnsn'rrs. n
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,744, dated October l, 1872. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PINDAR F. CooLEY, of thetown of Pittseld,State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and Improved Dredging Packing-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents the box embodying the .improvements in this invention, illustrating the same closed; Fig. 2 is the same, represented set for dredging; Fig. 3 represents the same set for removing the contents of the box in mass 5` Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the same; Fig. 5 is avertic'al view of the interior cover; Fig. 6 is a'vertical view of the slipping exterior cover.; and Fig. 7 is a sectional ele- `vati`on, illustrating a modified form of oonstruction of the box.
The same letters of reference indicate like" parts.
My invention relates. to a dredging packingbox, intended to hold spices for commerce, in which it will serve the double purpose of a packing-box for manufacturers and storekeepers, and also a dredging-box for house and tablepurposes; and consists in a sheet-metal box, made at one end with a head, which will be in one part solid', in another part with perforations for dredging purposes, and in another part open, which head is fixed immovable to the body of the box. Over the said .fixed and partly solid perforated and open head, is placed an exteriorslidin g cover, part of which is cut away, which sliding cover is secured to the headV by a rivet, or has its rim clinched or run over to lhold the same in place.
and also renders itcapable of being revolved l in either direction so asto bring the opening in the said cover overeither the opening or the perforated part or solid part of the head, as may be required. The opposite end of the box is made open, and is `provided with a flanged cover, into which end the contents are to be introduced.
In the drawing, AA represent the body of to the body A, as shown in Fig. 4.' rlhe said head has one portion out out, as portion a, which forms an opening to the body of the box, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.r Another portion of the said head is provided with perforations a: a: a', as shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 7, which is to actas a dredge or sifter, while the remaining portion, b, is left solid, as in Figs. 1,4,5 and 7, .which is to close beneath the opening in the sliding cover. Gis the sliding cover, provided with a rim, c, and made of a size to nicely iit overl the end of the box, as shown in the several drawings. A part of the top of the said cover is cut out to provide it with the opening d, which is made in size to correspond with the several parts a, x m, and b, made with the head B. The said sliding cover is secured to the box and over the head B by the central pivot Z or by having its flange ei-nt of thang-aa with the body, as U',
rection; and preference is given to the former in Fig. 7, because of the facility and perfection vof the parts when made by machinery. The opposite end of the box is provided with a rim cover, D, which is to close the said end when filled. In using this invention for a packing-box the sliding cover is to be so turned that the opening d will be made to pass and stand over the solid portion b in the fixed endhea-d B, as in Fig. l; the contents of the`box are then introduced through the open opposite end, (the cover D being removed 5) and when filled the cover D is to be placed thereon, and the box will be labeled in the usual manner.
When used for a dredge-box the sliding cover' scaled box, dredge-box, and an open box, in which no portion is required to be removed when the box is tobe used for any of the pur- -poses it is adapted to.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a packing and dredge box, the combination of the sliding cover C provided with the opening d, with the body A, and fixed head B, made part solid as b, and perforated as :v :z: w, and open as a, when all are constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
