WINDOW-SHADE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID E. PLATTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Shade Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved window shade holder and has for its primary object to provide simple means for mounting and supporting the windo-wshade, whereby the same may be bodily raised or lowered so as to provide ventilation at the top of the window while covering the lower portion thereof.

It is another object of the invention to provide a device of the above character which is simple in its construction, efficient and reliable in operation, and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.

It is another important object of my invention to provide means for applying the shade holder to the window frame, whereby the necessity of marring the face of the frame or breaking the plastering is obviated.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates a metal rod which is adapted to be disposed longitudinally upon the upper edge of the window frame indicated at F. This rod is provided at its ends with apertures to receive suitable fastening screws 6.

Upon the rod 5, adjacent each end thereof, the sleeves 8 formed ini one end of the bracket members 7 are engaged. These bracket members extend downwardly over the face of the window frame and upon the lower end of each bracket, a guide roller or sheave 9 is rotatably mounted.

ably constructed from a single plate of sheet metal. The member 10 has its longitudinal edge portions bent into spaced, parallel relation to the body of the plate, as at 12, to provide guides for the other supporting member 11. Thus, these imembers may be moved in relatively opposite, longitudinal directions and extended in accordance with the width of the window frame. Each of the supporting members is provided upon one end with an angularly disposed arm 13 and 1-1 respectively, one of said arms having a circular opening therein and the other being provided with a, slot in the usual manner to receive the trunnions on the ends of the shade roller indicated at R.

A metal ring 15 is suitably connected to each of the members 10 and 11, adjacent their outer ends, and to these rings the adjusting cords 16 are attached. The cords 16 may be tied or knotted together at intervals, as indicated at 17, to cooperate with a fastener fixed in one edge of the frame F. This fastener consists of a length of resilient wire bent to provide spaced loops 18 therein. The terminals of the wire are driven into the frame F and the loops 18 extend horizontally therefrom.

In the use of the device, it will be understood that when it is desired to ventilate the apartment, the cords 16 are detached from the fastener so that the shade roller and its support will drop downwardly, the cords 16 moving over the spaced guide rollers 9. When the shade has been lowered to the proper position, one of the knots 17 is en gaged beneath the opposed portions of the spaced loops 18, the cords 16 being tightly clamped by said loops. The upper sash may now be lowered. In this manner, the room or apartment can be thoroughly ventilated, while the lower portion of the window is covered by the shade. The shade is withdrawn from the roller in the usual manner, and when the roller is at the top of the window frame, the shade may be extended so as to cover the entire window.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood.
