To all whom t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH A. GUsTAv Prnwrrz, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester', in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic Cameras, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to photographic cameras, and more particularly to the type which employs a sensitized material in the form of a film movable from one roller to another to expose successive portions thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved film winding mechanism of the type in which a compensating means is employed for determining the length of the successive movements of the film winding means, said compensating` means embodying a plurality of stops with a selector controlled by the film winding means. Another feature of the invention is a connection between the operator and the film winding key which will permit the turning of the iilm winding key independently of the operator.
Still another object of the invention is to provide'a construction for carrying out the hereinbefore mentioned objects which will be simple and accurate in its operations, not likely to get out of order, and inexpenslve to manufacture. To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

This embodiment of the invention employs a film winding mechanism in which the film is moved from one roller 7 on to the other by a single operating member, the mounting of said member being controlled by a compensating means.
detail view of the invention shifted and about to which is journaled in the casin In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the spool 7 is held at one end by a key 8 arranged on the stub shaft 9 1 and is adapted for axial movement. his key is moved toward the spool 7 by a helical spring 10 which, in turn, is inclosed lwithin a tube 11, having its opposite walls slotted at 12 to form guides for the key 8. A clutch may be interposed between the sleeve or tube 11 and the sleeve 11b on the casing, for the purpose of preventing the return movement of the spool so as to keep the film taut. This clutch may be of any suitable construction as for instance an ordinary roller clutch having rollers 11 adapted to produce a binding action between the sleeves 11 and 11". It is apparent that, if the shaft 9 be turned, the spool 7 will also turn, and if the shaft 9 be moved axially to withdraw the `key 8 from engagement with the spool 7, the latter may be removed. A thumb piece 13 is arranged on the outer end of the shaft 9 to facilitate the manipulation of the shaft 9. On the shaft 9 a pinion 14 is arranged, and this pinion is engaged by a gear 15 which is journaled on a stub shaft 16 mounted on the casing 1 to one side of the shaft 9. Also turning on the stub shaft 16 is an operating member or lever 17, the latter having a clutch connection with the gear wheel 15, whereby, when the operating member is moved in one direction, motion will be transmitted to the gear wheel 15, and, when the operating member is moved in the other direction, the gear wheel 15 will remain stationary. At the same time, this clutch oonnection permits the rotation of the film by means of the thumb piece 13, independently of the operating member 17, to permit the film to be shifted independently of the other portions of the winding mechanism. suitable clutch connection may be employed between the o erator 17 and the gear 15, that shown emiodying an annular depending flange 18 on the operating member 17 having its inner periphery adapted to be engaged by cylindrical rollers 19, which are pressed outwardly by cam projections on the gear wheel 15 to engage the flange 18 when the operating member is turned in one direction, but which recede or move away from the flange when the operating member 17 is moved in the other direction, this being a -common form of clutch.

stop 32, which is yieldingly mounted on the lever 17 ,-and is adapted to coperate-successively with l.the stationary stops 33 which are arranged concentrically about the pivot of the film winding lever 17. These stationary stops'33 are beveled on one and the same side at 34, so that, when the operating lever 17 is moved in one direction, the stop 37 lwill coperate with said beveled faces and ride over the stops, but when the lever 17 is moved in the other direction, if nothing interferes with the action, the stop 32 will coperate with the stops 33 to limit the movement of the operating lever. In order to determine `which of the stops is to. be engaged, a selector isy employed which causes the stop 32 to successively engagethe stops 33 to shortenthe throw of the operating lever 17oneach successive movement. This selectoig-in this instance, embodies a shifting member having two curved arms 35 and 36 connected together at one of their ends andseparated at their other ends, these armsv Vlying on opposite sides of the curved series of stops 33. The top surface of one of these arms is in a plane slightly above the Vuppermost end of the stops 33, so that when said surface lies adjacent to said stops, it will serve as a guide for the stop 32 and prevent engagement between said stop- 32 and Vthe stops 33. The other arm 35, of the selector yields laterally and is bent or deflected inwardly at 37 ,so las to projectA between the stops 33 in order to hold the selector in its shifted position. f
It is apparent that the selecting device can be moved in a line which will cause it to successively expose the stopsr33 for en- This -movement of the selecting device is preferably stepby-step, and isaccomplished by providing a shoulder 38 on the selecting device -at the end of the guide arm 36. Vhen the stop 32 reaches the end of the guide arm 36, it drops behind the shoulder 38, so.that, upon the return movement of the stop 32, the selecting' device will be lshifted until the stop 32'engages the beveled face 34, Vafter which said stop 32 will pass onto the guide portion 36. Upon the stop 32 reaching the first portion of the guide, a portion or shoulder 39 on the film shifting lever 17 will cop'erate with the extreme end of the arm 35, due to the deflection of saidarmV into the path of said portion 39 by the engagement of the portion 37 with one of the vstops 33, as will be more clearly shown in detail in Fig. 10. To guide they selector in a path concentric with the axis of turning of thefilm-winding lever 17, the selector is provided with a projection 42 depending into a guidegroove 413 formed in aplate on the camera casing 1. After the selector has been 4shifted to the end of its movement, due to the winding of the film, said selector is returned so that the end thereof exposes the. firststop 33`for engagement bythe stop 32, this return being effected by pressing with the ngers upon the selector at the end thereof, s forming a connection between the arms 35 and 36. It is apparent, however, that the selector may be returned to its original position by any other suitable means. An index or pointer 35@1 may be provided on the selector-to cooperate with a scale V35b on the casing so as to point out the number of the exposure. j Y l With a camera constructed inaccordance with this invention it is possible to employ a film winding mechanism in which the operator'has a single movement to shift the lm` i the desired distance and is controlled bya compensating means which employs a plurality of kfixed stops under the control of aY selector which successively exposes said stops for engagement by the film winding mechanism. i
What' I claim as my inventionV andY desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination in a lilm camera, an axially movable filmV winding key having a linger piece thereon and also a pinion on its shaft, a `gear wheel meshing with said pinion and arranged so that the latter maybe moved out of mesh therewith to turn the key independently of the i ator connected to the gear to turn the latter.
2. In combination in a camera having a film winding means, compensating means for determining the lengths of the successive movements of the lm winding means comgear, and an operr a movable selecting means Controlled fby said film winding means and coperating with said stops to determine the effective one.
3. I'n combination with a roll film camera having a film Winding means, provided with an operator having a stop, a plurality of stationary stops for eoperating with the stop on the operator, and selecting means controlled by said film Winding means for causing said operator stop to successively engage said stationary stops to determine movements in the operator corresponding to the amount of material on the film roll of the camera.
4. In combination in a roll film camera havinga film Winding means provided With an operator having a stop, a plurality of stationary stops, and a selector for the sta tionary stops Controlled by the film Winding means.
5. In eombinatign in a roll film camera Copies of this patent may be obtained for having a film windinor means, a yieldingly mounted stop on the film winding means, a plurality of' stationary stops for successively engaging said yieldingly mounted stop, and means for holding said yieldingly mounted stop out of' coperation with those stationary stops over which the yieldingly mounted stop must pass to coperate with the desired stationary stop.
6. In combination in a roll film camera having` a film Winding means, a yieldingly mounted stop on the film winding means, a plurality of stationary stops for successively engaging said yieldingly mounted stop, and a shiftable guide for holding the yieldingly mounted stop out of engagement with those stationary stops over which the yieldingly mounted stop must pass to coperate with the desired stationary stop.
