Be it known that I, JESSE W. D. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States,residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton Dis# tributers; and I do hereby declare the fol# lowing'to be a full, clear, and exact descr1ption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v This invent-ion relates to a cotton distributer, and particularly to the push board Y ordinarily used in a `rollerv gin for use upon long staple cotton.

The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of reciprocating push board having mounted thereon a toothed cotton distributer movable independently of theV board and ypreferably laterallyto the travel'of the board. f

A further objectV of the invention is to provide a push board having at its outer edge a toothed cotton distributer--bar slidinglyfmounted thereon together with means for reciprocating this distributer independently of the movement ofl the board and laterally thereto.

The numeral "10 Vdesignates the Acasing -Vof a cotton gin which may be of any desiredV size or configuration and is provided with suitable tracks of ways 11 in which the usual type of push board 12 is adapted to reciprocate. This board may be actuated by any desired means, for instance; the pitman rods 13 pivoted thereto at 1&1 and also pivoted at 15 to a crank arm 16 carried by a driving shaft 17. This shaft may be oscillated by any mechanical means, for instance:

The cottondistributer bar 22 maybe mounted upon the push board 1'2 in any preferred manner, a desirable form thereof being herein shown in which the distributer bar is disposed'inl a sloti2'8 formed in the outer free edge of the board and adapted to move therein lateral-ly of the direction of travel of the board'. For the purposey ofretaining the distributer 22' and guiding its movements it is provided with elongated slots 24; through which pins 25 removably secured to the` board-extend. The distributer is also provided with teeth or needles' 26 to operate uponLand loosen any vmassed cotton which maylie in the path'of the gin knives.

A modied form of the actuating means for the distributerl bar' is shown in- Fig. 3 wherein the bar y6 is of'tliey same general constructionasfshown in vFig., 2, but is provided with curved `faces 33" at` opposite ends.

In operation of the invention a push board is reciprocated toward and from the gin knives in the usual manner and during said travel the distributer pins or needles are reciprocated laterally of the board in opposite direction so as to keep the seed cotton from banking in front of the knives and scatter it so that the cotton seed may be passed through the gin and relieve the banking of the feed against the knives. The seed cotton which falls from the upper part of the gin stand is liable to bank up in front of the push board unless means be provided to distribute and separate this mass. Such bulked seed cotton forms a compact body which is liable to spring or break the gin knives. It will be seen that the push board provided with this distributer provides two movements one forcing the cotton toward the gin knives and the other distributing it over the area thereof and thus relieves the congestion.

Vhilethis invention has been shown as applied to a particular type of cotton gin and means disclosed for operating the parts still the invention is not confined to the details thereof, but embraces the novel construction of push board and distributer as defined by the patent claims.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, a push board mounted to reciprocate toward and from said mechanism, a distributer mount-ed upon said push board to move therewith and also laterally of its travel, and means for actuating said distributer due to its movement with the pushboard.

In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, a push board mounted to reciprocate toward and from said mechanism, a distributer mounted upon said push board to move laterally of its t avel, a cam for actuating said distributer in one direction, and means for restoring` said distributer. i 3. In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, a push board mounted to reciprocate toward and from said mechanism and provided with a slot in its free edge, a toothed distributer bar mounted to slide in said slot to move with said board, and means relatively to which said bar is movable with said board for reciprocating said bar.

4. In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, apush board mounted to reciprocate f toward'and from said mechanism and provided with a slot inits free edge, a toothed distributer bar mounted to slide in said slot,

a cam face adapted to contact with one end of said bar, and means to restore said bar.

5. In the cotton distributer, a. gin mechanism, a push board mounted to reciprocate toward and from said mechanism and provided with a slotted free edge, a toothed distributer bar mounted in said slot and provided with elongated slots therein, guide pins carriedby the board and extended through said elongated slots, an inclined cam face carried by the gin casing and adapted to contact with one end ofsaid bar, and means for restoring said bar.

In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, a push board mounted toreciprocate toward and from said mechanism and provided with a slotted free edge, a toothed distributer bar mounted in said slot and provided with elongated slots therein, guide pins carried by the front and extended through said elongated slots, an inclined cam face carried by the gin casing and adapted to contact with one end of said bar, a lug carried by said bar and extending into a recess within said board, and a restoring spring disposed in said recess to bear against said luO.

7. In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, a push board mounted to reciprocate toward and from said mechanism, a distributer, mounted upon said board and movable therewith and also independent thereof, and means for moving said distributer by its travel with said board.

8. In the cotton distributer, a gin mechanism, a push board mounted to reciprocate toward and from said mechanism, a distributer mounted upon said board and movable therewith and also independent thereof, and means relatively to which said distributeris movable with said board for moving said distributer laterally to the path of travel of said board and during the movement of the boa-rd.
