RECEPTACLE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 3. 1919.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.

GRANVEL FRANKLIN, F FLINT, MICHIGAN.
RECEPTAGLE.
l,dl6,023.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed march a, 1919. Serial No. saunas.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, G'RANVEL Fnenrcnm,- a citizen of the llnited States, resldmg at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
'llhis invention relates to deposit and collection receptacles and more especially to those adapted to contain milk bottles, and the object of the same is to produce a receptacle of this character adapted to be set up outside the kitchen door or the tradesmens entrance and having compartments in which supplies may be left in the absence of the householder.
lhe invention comprises a central compartment for various goods and packages which may be dropped .into place, with means for preventing access thereto by unauthorized persons, and end compartments for milk bottles and the like, whose doors are automatically latched when closed while the milk bottle is in place filled with milk.
The invention also comprises other details as fully set forth in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of this receptacle with certain of its doors open.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section.
Fig. 3 is a right hand end elevation with the door open, and part of the. top broken away.
Fig. l is a horizontal sectional ,detail showing the catch for one of the end doors.
l will say at starting that this receptacle may be made of any appropriate material and proportions. it is adapted to be screwed against the house wall alongside the kitchen door, or it might be disposed upon a shelf or mounted on a post. in rural communities, it may be disposed alongside the road at a considerable distance from the homestead. The body of the receptacle comprises a closed bottom l, a closed upright back 2, a top 3 preferably inclined forward and having a considerable opening 4 between its ends, a front 5 having a large door opening 6, and a door 7 hinged at its lower edge at 8 to the front edge of the bottom 1 and adapted to be closed and looked as at 9 by means of a key which remains in the possession of the householder. Within the body thus formed are two transverse partitions l0 producing a large central compartment and two smaller end compartments, but all of these compartments are exposed when the front door is swung open, and therefore the opening of time door gives access to the entire interior.
Within the partitions near their upper ends, are journaled the truions ll of a rotating door composed of four wings 12 radiat ng from the center and two disk like end pieces 13 which lie near the end pieces of the top 'lhis rotating door closes the openlng 4 1n the top, and yet any small article laid upon one of the wings l2 will cause the rotary door to turn on its axis and the article will be dropped into the large central compartment. Yet the presence of th1s door prevents an unauthorized person from reaching into the top and withdraw- 1ng said artioleor articles after they have reached said compartment. lo quite an extent also, the presence of this door encludes snow and rain, and certainly it lreeps animals out of the interior. "lhe trnnnions ll of the door may be carried ccmpletelv through the ends 15 of the body as showh at 16 in Fig. l, but the lower portion of each end has a considerable opening l'i' in which on spring hinges 18 is mounted a door 19. When the two doors lll are closed and latched by means yet to be described, access to the interior can only be had by opening the front door 7. The details of the smaller compartments beyond the partition 10 are shown with respect to but one of them, but as these compartments and their contents are alike a description of one will be sulficient.
Hinged at 20 upon the bottom l is a small platform 21 from whose rear rises a link 22 which is connected with a movable keeper constituting a catch for the door. This catch as seen in Fig. l is of inverted llshape, being a piece of resilient metal slidably mounted in a guide 23 carried by the rear wall of the receptacle or baclr 2 of the body. The inner leg 2d of the catch is connected at its lower end with the link 22, so that depression of the platform 2l moves the entire catch downward against the tension of a spring 25 which coects the center of the catch with a screw eye or staple 26 in the back plate 2. 'lhe front leg 27 of the catch is held normally by the spring at a point about even with the guide 23 at which time the platform 21 is raised as shown. A hooked latch 28 is carried by the door, being Patented Sept. 1c, 1919;
lib
llltl becomes latched so that thereafter it may of the spring hinges 18, places his milk on the platform 21, and then releases the door. The weight of the bottle and milk draws down on the catch against the tension of the spring 25, and the front leg 27 thereof is projected below the guide 23. As the door closes the beveled tip of the latch 28 passes the lower end of the front leg 27 which swings aside slightly, and the door not be opened. Now whenthe householder comes, he unlocks the front door 7 at 9, swings it open as shown in Fig. 1, and reaches into the left hand compartment 10 and removes the bottle of milk. Thisof course releases the tension on the spring 25 .disengages the latch 28, and the door 19 may be swung open as described above. The same is true with the compartment at the right end of the receptacle. One of these compartments may be utilized by the milk man, and the other by some other tradesman, whereas small articles may be dropped through the revolving door in the top of the receptacle.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove'expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a milk bottle receptacle, the combination with a body having a door opening,
a door hinged within said opening, and a latch on the door having a beveled tip; of a guide within said body, an inverted U-shaped catch slidably mounted in said guide, a platform movable within the body and connected with one leg of said catch whereby a weight on the platform will depress the catch and throw the other leg into the path of said latch, and yielding means for normally raising said catch, as described.
2. In a milk bottle receptacle, the combination with a body having a door opening in its front and a door opening in its end, a main door closing the front opening and having means for looking it, a second door closing the other opening and having a latch with a beveled tip, and spring hinges for the second door holding it normally closed; of an inverted U-shaped catch slidably mounted Within the body and having a long rear leg and a short front leg, a platform connected with the rear leg and capable of being depressed by a milk bottle, and a spring connected to the top of the catch for normally raising it out of the path of said latch and yielding under the weight of said milk bottle.
3. In a milk bottle receptacle, the combination with a body having a door opening in its front and a door opening in its end, a main door closing the front opening and having means for looking it, a second door hinged on said body for closing the end opening, of an inverted U-shaped catch slidably mounted within said body and having a long rear leg and a short front leg, a latch having a beveled tip carried by said second door, a platform connected with the rear leg of said catch and capable of being depressed by a milk bottle, and a spring connected to the top of the catclrfor normally raising it out of the path of said latch and yielding under the weight of said milk bottle.
'4. In a milk bottle receptacle, the combination with a body having a door opening in its front and a door opening in its end, a main door closing the front opening and having means for looking it, a second door hinged on said body for closing the opening in the end of said body, a latch carried by said second mentioned door, of an inverted U-shaped catch slidably mounted within the body and having a long rear leg and a short front leg, a platform connected with the long leg and capable of being depressed for moving the short leg of said catch into the path of said latch, and yielding means for normally raising said catch, as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GRANVEL FRANKLIN.
