This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for raising and lowering receptacles used in paint mixing machines and so forth, and consistsessentially in the provision of means for winding up belt connections with a carriage on which the receptacle is placed, and for holding the carriage in different positions.

The invention consists of an apparatus having various details of construction, combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this application and in which simi` lar letters of reference indicate like parts in the views in which,

Reference now being had tothe details of the drawings by letter A designates the frame of the apparatus having standards or beams B with cross pieces at the upper portions thereof upon which a motor C is fastened for supplying power to drive the mixer shaft D which is journaled in suitable bearings in cross pieces of the frame. A counter shaft E is journaled in the frame and has a wheel E keyed thereto which has belted connection with a pulley C fixed to the motor shaft, and F is an idler bearing against the belt G to keep same taut. Said counter shaft has keyed thereto a balance wheel H, and at one end is a bevel gear I in mesh with a similar gear D keyed to the shaft D. Stirrer blades of any shape and designated by letter L, are adjustably held upon the shaft D by means of set screws L adapting same for convenient use as may be desired.

Fixed to the shaft P is a gear wheel R in mesh with a small pinion wheel S fixed to a pin S2 journaled in an aperture in the end of the arm S', which latter is fixed to a hollow shaft S8 journaled upon a headed pin S5 which is fixed to the standard B. Said hollow shaft has an integral finger S4 to which the upper end of the coiled spring SY is fastened, while the lower end of said spring is secured to a bracket S6 upon the standard. A handle S10 has an arm which is fixed to said pin S2 and serves as a means for rotating the pinion S. By the provision of the coil spring S7 it will be noted that the pinion S will be held frictionally in mesh with the teeth of the gear R and serving as a brake mechanism by reason of the friction intermediate the intermeshing gears.

In operation, the ingredients to be mixed are placed within the receptacle, and through the medium of the motor the paddle or stirrer carrying shaft may be rotated, the paddles being adjusted to the locations de- Sired. The operator may by the hand lever, cause the receptacle to be raised to the de sired elevation, to cause the paint materials to be thoroughly mixed. By the provision of an apparatus embodying the construction of my invention, a simple and eiiicient means is afforded whereby lar-ge quantities of paint materials may be easily, thoroughly and quickly mixed, the parts being made adjustible to facilitate the thoroughness of the wor While I have shown a particular form of apparatus embodying the principle of my invention, it will be understood that the details of the construction of the apparatus may be varied if desired without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim to be new isl. In combination with a frame having vertically disposed beams spaced apart, a Shaft journaled in suitable bearings in said frame, a carriage having upright pieces one mounted upon either side of a beam, bars outside the beams and connecting said upright pieces, andf-ooperating with the latter to guide the earriagelas it is raised and lowered, and belts fastened at their lower ends to said bars and adapted to wind upon said shaft.

In combination with a frame having vertically disposed beams, a vertically movable `carriage mounted between the latter, and means for guiding the carriage as it is raised and lowered, a shaft journaled in said frame, belts secured vat their lower ends to the carriage and their upper ends winding upon said shaft, a gear fixed' to said shaft, an arm pivotally mounted upon the frame, a pinion journaled upon the arm and in mesh with said gear wheel, a crank handle iiXed to said pinion, said arm having an integral finger, a spring fastened at one end thereto and its other end to the frame.
