MINING MACHINE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 3, NH).
Patented Sept. 9, 1919.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- I WILLIAM E. YOUNG, F UNION'I'OWN, PENNSYLVA.
MInIne-Macmnn.
To all whomiit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM a citizen of the United States, and resident of Union-town, in the county of Fayette and- State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in; Mining-Mas chines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. r V
My invention relates to minlng machlnes.
The object of my nvention is to provide 7 a simple and efficient form of mimng'ma- "chine in which. the coal maybe mined rapidly and expeditiously, doing away with the hand-operations now commonly employed in the mining of coal with the pick and shovel."
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a planview of my improved mining machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a detail of the frame for shifting the picks.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a suitable truck mounted on wheels 3 adapted to travel on the track 4, which is laid on the floor of the mine.
Mounted forwardly of the truck 2 is the frame 5, said frame being composed of the side bars 6 which have the forwardly and the frame for the-purpose more fully hereinafter set forth. At the forward end of the frame 5 are the casters or wheels 15 which support the forward end of the frame when the machine is in operation, said casters traveling on the floor of the mine beyond the track 4. In
order to raise the I a Specification of Letters Patent.
E. roam,
are mounted at opposite sides front and of the frame Patented Sept. 9,.19f9.
Application filed may 3, 1919. Serial No. 294,431.
and lift the casters 15 from the floor mine, provide the latch hooks 16 which of the truck 2, said latch hooks being connected by the rod 17 so as to be capable of being operated.
in unison. An operating rod 18 is connected as to the rod 17 and said rod 18 is connected to the lever 19 whereby the latch hooks are moved into and out of engagement with the cross-bar 10. It is apparent from the above that the cross-bar 10, the forward end of the frame will be elevated so as to lift the casters from the floor of the mine when the machine is being. transported on the track 4 from. a r
one part/'ofthe mine to another.
A. suitable electrical motor-'20 is mounted a on the frame 5 which has the bevel-wheel I 22 which meshes with the bevel-gear 23 on the stub-shaft 24. A sprocketwheel 25 on the stub-sh'aft24 is'engaged by the sprocketto chain 26. This sprocket chain 26 engages a sprocket-wheel 27 on the vertical shaft 28 journaled in bearings in the members 7 and 8 at the forward end of the frame 5.
30 on the stub-shaft 24 15 A gear-wheel meshes with a gear-wheel 31 onthe stubshaft 32. Stub-shaft 32. carries the sprocketwheel 33with which the chain 34 engages. The chain 34 also engages a sprocket wheel 35, on the vertical hearings in the members 7 and 8 at the opposite side of-the frame 5.
At the forward end of the frame 5 are the tringular shaped chainguides 39, said guides being supported by the. standards 40 to the frame 5. The verp and 40 secured tical" shafts 28 and 36 pass through the triangular chain-guides 39 and have the cutter chains 41 mounted: on
er the a when the latch hooks engage to.
A multiple double crank-shaft 52 is journaled in bearings 53 on the frame 5, and said crank-shaft is driven (by power transmitted to the sprocket 54 by means of a chain 55 passing around the sprocket 56 on the shaft 57 which is driven by a suitable motor 58. The picks- 59 are mounted to reciprocate in guides 60 in the frame 46, the inner endsof said picks being connected to 'pitmen 62 crank-shaft so that said picks alternate with each other in advancing and withdrawing from the coal. These picks, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 3, are secured to a box-like member 61 which is adapted to reciprocate in the guides 60, said member being pivotally connected to the pitman 62 as at 63, so as to allow for the throw of the crank 52.
A belt-conveyer 64 is provided for conveying the coal from the forward end of the machine toward the rear, said belt being mounted on rollers 65 and 66. .P'ower for driving said belt is transmitted from the motor 58, butras said conveyer-belt forms no'part of my invention, it has not been deemed necessary to illustrate or describe the same in detail. The belt 63 delivers the coal onto a conveyer-belt 67, and this belt carries the coal to the rear to be .delivered into a mine-car. This conveyer-belt, however, forms no partof my invention, and has it at the hei 5 is released by the not been illustrated in detail.
hen my improved machine is in use, the
truck 2 is brought up on the track 4 into position for the machine to operate on the coal, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The frame hook-latches 16 and said frame drops with the casters -15 resting on the mine-floor. Power is then appliedto operate the cutter-chains 41 and these outters cut into the coal across the wall thereof making the cuts at different heights. Simultaneouslywith this operation of the cutter-chain .4 1 the picks 59 are put into operation, said picks being inclined at an angle to the wall and Working alternately on the coal above the chain-cutters. The angle at which the picks operate can be changed by raising or lowering the bar 47 and securing ght desired in the clevis 49.
y mountmg the cutter chains on the triangular frames at the front end of the maof a frame,
chine, thevchains are very materially reduced in length and less power is required to operate the same thereby reducing the cos-t of operations, and providing a more effective cutting means.
The coal, as it ismined, is deposited on the conveyer 63 and carried to the rear of the machine.
The frame 5 may be shifted laterally due to the fact that said frame is pivotally mounted on the king-pin 13, and in this way the cut may be made across the entire Wall of coal. i
What I claim is:
1. In a mining machine, theoombination of a suitable frame, triangular shaped chainguides at the forward end of said frame at different heights, cutter-chains mounted in said guides, and means for driving said cutter chains.
2 In a mining machine, the combination of a frame, a series of triangular shaped chain-guides at the forward end of said frame arranged at different heights, a vertical shaft in said frame passing through said chain-guides, means for driving said shaft, sprocket-wheels mounted in said chain-guides, and cutter-chains engaging said sprocket-wheels.
In a mining machine, the combination of a frame, a series of cutter-chains carried by said frame at different heights, picks above said cutter-chains, and means for reciprocating said picks.
In a mining machine, the combination of a frame, cutter-chains carried thereby at different heights, picks above .said cutterchains, means for changing the angle of said picks, and means for reciprocating said picks.
5. In a mining machine, the combination of a frame, cutter-chains carried thereby, arranged at different heights, picks above said cutter chains, and means for reciprocating said picks, said picks alternatingwith each other in advancing and withdrawing from the coal.
In mining machines, the combination of a frame, a series of cutter-chains arranged at different heights, means for drawing said cutter-chains, a pick-frame supported by said frame above said cutter-chains, said pick-frame having guides therein, picks mounted in said guides, and means for reciprocating said picks.
In a mining machine, the combination a series of chain-cutters arranged at different heights, pick-frames supported by said frame above said cutterframes, picks carried by said pick-frame, means for reciprocating said picks, a rearwardly extending bar connected to said pick-frame, said bar being fulcrumed on vof a frame, a series of cutter-chains arranged at diflerent heights, a pick-frame on said frame above said cutterrehains, picks mounted in said frame, a double-crank 4 shaft mounted insaid frame, connections between said picks and said double crank 10 shaft, the cranks of said shaft being set at difierent angles Withreference to eaehiother.
In testimony whereof, I the said WILLIAM E. YOUNG, have hereunto set my hand.
LLIAM E. YOUNG.
