Application filed March 22, 1919. Serial No. 284,290.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUDDIE JOHNSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Stockhani, in the county of Hamilton and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog Butchering and Scalding Tables, ;of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved table and derrick boom for scalding, butchering and cleaning hogs and the like, particularly adapted to use on farms and elsewhere. y One of the objects of the invention is to provide a table of this kind, mounted on runners, whereby the table may be moved from one place to another. a
The invention further aims to provide means for the support of a hog, and means whereby the hog may be raised and lowered in a barrel of scalding water, for scalding the 110g. p
The invention further aims to provide means whereby the barrel may be supported on different inclines, and means for holding the derrick boom in such positions with regard to the inclinations of the barrel,
whereby the hog may be raised and lowered more conveniently according to the scalding result desired.
It is a further aim of the invention to afford improved means for holding the derrick boom in different adjusted positions.
As a further object of the invention it is the aim to afford means for supporting the hog straight up and down after it Is scraped, whereby the hog may be cleaned on its interior.
Also it is the aim to provide bracing means for reinforcing the sides of the rectangular derrick boom, and also to atlord bracing means for reinforcing the structure of the table. y e
While the structure in the present illustrations is deemed preferable, a reduction of the structure to a practical form for commercial purposes may require alterations. The right to these alterations is claimed,
provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown 1n the drawlngs, and claimed.
Inthe drawings:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of the improved table constructed in accordance with the invention, and in this figure the derrick boom is shown in different position indotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 isa longitudinal sectional view on line 3-3 Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a sectional view on line P L of Fig. :1, at a point through the hoisting drum. i
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line 5--5 of Fig. l, illustrating theintersecting braces, which are clamped together at the point of their intersection by means ofaclamp.
Fig. dis a detail sectional view through the clamp shown in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates porting the super-imposed beams 3; Crossing intersecting braces 5 connect the runners and super-1mposed beams, as shown clearly a frame as a whole, and this frame com in the cross-sectional views ofthe structure.
These braces 5 are designed to reinforce the structure and to insure rigidlty. In order to insure this result the braces at their points of intersection are clamped together by the clamplng members 6 having securing bolts 7. Mounted upon the super-in'iposed beams 3 1s a bedortable plate 8. The forward portions of the runners 2 are provided with eXten sions 9, on which transverse bars 10 are se cured. A barrel contaming scaldlng water or the like is designed to be supported on these. bars 10, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
Theend edgell of the bed or table plate 8 is provided with a semi-circular cut-away portlon orrecess 12. Th s cut-awayportlon conforms to the annular contour of the barrel,in order to holdthe barrel initsproper position. It is obvious that since the bars 10 arespaced as shown, the barrelmay be tilted on different. inclinations, as, shown clearlyin dotted lines. In order to tilt the barrel in such a manner the corner of the barrel engages between two of the bars 10. The barrel is tilted in this manner, in order to accommodate itself to the position of the derrick boom.
Mounted in suitable bearings of the superboom comprises side bars 20, whichare pivotallymounted upon-the bolts 21, which pass throiwh the sidebars and through the beams 3. The outer ends .ofthesidebooms 20 are connected by the cross-piece 21, there being clamps 22 connecting the corner junctions of the side bars 20 and the cross piece 2 1". These clamps are constructedof sheet metal and are designed for straddling the corners of the boom, and are secured'in place as at 23, thereby insuring strength and rigidity, hence reinforcing the boom against strains.
Passingthrough the lowerend ofone of the side bars 20 is aneye-bolt 24, the same being secured in position bythe nut 25. The elongated rod 26, has one end connected in the eyebolt 24,.and its other end terminates in a lateral hook 27, to engage any one of the apertures designated 28, .29 and 30, respectively. It is obvious that by engagin the hook 27 in the aperture 28, the derrick boom will be supported in a vertical position, whereby the hog may be so suspended after it is scraped, :in order that-the entrails may be removed.
By en aging the hook 2 7 in the "aperture 29, therby supporting the boom in an inclined position, the barrel being also inclined, the hog may be raised and lowered in thebarrel (which is supplied with scalding )water, for the purpose of scalding the hog 7 Obviously by inserting the hook 27 the aperture or opening 30, andarranging the barrel vertically, as in full lines in the drawings, the hog maybe lowered into the barrel, subsequently .to having been hoisted from the ground; The-cross piece 21 on the boom has suspended .fro1n a'hook or an eye31, a pulley this ropeor cable is suppliedwith a hook 34,
nectedtothe drum. By connectingthehook of one end of the cableto the hog, .while on the ground, and by imparting motion to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing drum, winding the cable thereon, the hog ends of the side bars of the boom, thereby limitingthe boom in its vertical position.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an apparatus as set forth, the combination with a frame provided with a supporting bed or table, of a lifting boom comprising side bars, straddling and being pivoted toone end of the frame, braces secured to the sides of the frame provided with recesses, said recesses having abutment shoulders to be engaged by the ends of the side bars of the boom, when the ends engage the recesses, thereby supporting the boom in a vertical position.
2. In an apparatus as set forth, the combination with a frame provided with a supporting bed or table, of a lifting boom comprising side bars, straddling and being pivoted to:one end of the frame, braces secured to the sides of the frame provided with recesses, said recesses having abutment shoulders to .be engaged by the ends of the side bars of the boom, when the ends engage the recesses, thereby supporting the boom in a -vertical position, and means for holding the boom in different adjusted inclined positions.
3. In an apparatus as set forth, the combination with a supporting table frame, of means .at .one .end of the table supporting frame for holding a barrel in various in- :clined positions, .a boom pivotally mounted on the supporting table frame near its opposite ends, and means for holding the boom in various corresponding inclined positions relatively to the positions of the barrel, whereby a hog, which may be suspended from-the boom, may be raised and lowered in the barrel. 32, over which a rope 33 passes. One endof In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
