Be it known thatI, LoU s FALKENAU, a citizen of thej-United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smokin Devices, of which the following. is a speci cation.

invention relates to improvements in smoking devices and consists primarily providing a suitable holder similar to atobacco pipe with an attachment for containing-and smokingthe tobacco in a proper and eflicient manner, and without placing the tobacco in the usual bowl of the pipe.

My invention further consists in providingj 1n connectlon with such an attachment-anoutlet from the bowl through the pipe-stem, which outlet is located above the bottom of the bowl. 7

In the drawing Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a tobacco smoking device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an elevation of the tobacco-container removed; Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 but showing the paper covering about to be applied; and Fig. 4 an elevation of a modified form of tobacco-container.

In the broader aspect of my invention, that is in so far as the tobacco-container is concerned, the holder may be of any desired construction but I prefer to utilize a tobacco pipe as such holder and to employ the particular construction of pipe herein shown. This pipe consists of a bowl A having a chamber a and an outlet 6 extending through the stem B. As shown this outlet leads from the bowl chamber at a point above the bottom thereof and intermediate its height for a purpose hereinafter explained.

The attachment or tobacco-container C consists of a shell of suitable sheet metal and having its lower portion 0 slightly tapered so as to fit properly within the correspondingly tapered upper portion of the bowl chamber. Describing the form of tobacco-container shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the same is a cylinder except for the slightly tapered lower portion, and the same is provided with series of small openings 0 which are adapted to give v the necessary air opening through the shell, but without unnecessarily weakening the same or to permit buckling or distortion from its oylin drical form clue to heat in the tobacco being smoked,

The tobaccocontainer is open from top to bottom with the exception that it is provided in its lower portion with a suit-able transverse perforated partition (Y'forming' thebo'ttonl of the container and holding the "tobacco therein. As "shown, and by preference, this perforated bottom is interme- 'diate theperforations 0. and the'lower end of the container.

f A sheet of paper such 'as the ordinary cigarette paper D is wrapped around this container, and thus enveloping the outer sides thereof and covering the perforations therein, the edge of such paper which is firstattached to the container, as shown in Fig. 5, being moistened and thereafter'the other or opposite edge being likewise moistened for attachment to the overlapping edge. By' preference I provide the container with a comparatively broad solid surface 0 extending from top to bottom thereof as a means for effectually holding the paper.

I prefer to use the cylindrical form of container shown in Fig. 2, inasmuch as it permits me to utilize as the paper covering permit sufiicient air to pass through for the combustion and will prevent the ashes from dropping through the perforations. Moreover, any drippings of nicotin or the like or of ashes through the perforated botton C which drop to the bottom of the bowl and chamber, but as the outlet Z) is a considerable distance above such bottom it will not become clogged thereby.

By means of this attachment the tobacco by eing placed in this container can be smoked to its full extent, which is not the case when the tobacco is placed in the bowl of the pipe, and moreover the nicotin and so forth is permitted to drain therefrom instead of being retained in a solid ma'ssof tobacco; Furthermore, by the use of the paper the proper air supply is obtained and the retaining of the ashes Within the container is effectually performed.

I claim:

1. In combination with a holder similar to a tobacco-pipe, a tobacco-container fitting into the pipe bowl and projecting upwardly cxtraneously therefrom, such container consisting of a shell having side and bottom perforations, and a strip of paper extending around the outer sides of the shell and covering the side perforations thereof.

2. In combination With a holder similar to a tobacco-pipe, a tobacco-container fitting into the pipe bowl and projecting upwardly extraneously therefrom, such container consisting of a shell having side and bottom perforations, and a strip of paper extending around the outer sides of the shell and covering the side perforations thereof, said shell having a comparatively Wide and unperforated strip extending from top to bottom to provide for attachment of the paper.

' 3. In combination with a holder similar to a tobaccopipe, a tobacco-container fitting into the pipe boWl and projecting up Wardly extraneously therefrom, such container consisting of a shell having side and bottom perforations, and a strip of paper extending around the outer sides of the shell and covering the side perforations thereof, said bottom of the container being located near the top line of the bowl.

4. In combination With a holder similar to a tobacco-pipe, a tobacco-container fitting into the pipe bowl and projecting upwardly extraneously therefrom, such container consisting of a shell having side and bottom perforations, and a strip of paper extending around the outer sides of the shell and covering the side perforations thereof, said side perforations being numerous but comparatively small to prevent burning up of said paper.
