To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTE CHANARD, of 5 Rue de Bruxelles, Paris, France, have invented Receptacles for Incendiary Aerial Bombs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In my patent application Ser. No. 247,298 filed'July 29th 1918-, there is described and shown a receptacle for aerial incendiary bombs, in which the body of the receptacle is constituted by two rigid shells which affect, when they are connected together, the form of a solid of revolution and the longitudinal edges of ,which,'placed at a certain interval from each other, are connected by a band'or -surface of easily fusible or combustible material. I
It results from this constructive arrangement that the direct or indirect ignition-of the incendiary material contained in the receptacle brings" about the combustion and the disappearance of'the material connecting the shells, and, consequently, the separation of these latter'and the deposit of the incendiary material upon the target struck by the bomb.
The present addition has for its object a new method of constructing'the receptacle for aerial incendiary bombs forming the subject matter of'the patent application Ser. No. 247,298 filed July 29th, 1918.
It comprises, broadly, two seml-cylindrical shells soldered on to the short sides of a receptacle of rectangular section, so as to provide a certain space between their vertical edges and to form two distinct compartments: one, a central one, formed by the re ceptacle of rectangular section and containing a suitable thermite or highly inflammable mixture, and theother bounded by the two shells, surroundingthe first one and containing an incendiary composition such as that set forth in my co-pending application Ser. No. 24:5,003, filed July 15, 1918, which,
comprises a substance, such as pitch, tar or resin, which is not readily inflammable under normal conditions, a solvent therefor, and a substance capable of supporting the combustion thereof.
This constructive arrangement ceptacle ermits a projectile to be Obtained which aflects the form of a solid of revolution, symmetrical on its transverse axis, and receiving the fuse at one of its ends and the tail at the other end.
The central receptacle contains the autoof the rethermic mixture and is constructed of an easily fusible material and isprovided on its exposed faces, with vent holes closed;

When the fuse acts, the fire is transmitted through the medium ofthe quick match Wicks, to the thermi'te and, at the same time,
the fusible plates closing the vent holes are melted. Theresult is that the auto-thermic mlxture burns in an open vessel, bringing about the disappearance of the receptaclev which contains it and i nites the incendiary composition which will be entirelydeposited ,onarriving at the target, owing to the opening of the two shells insulatedfrom each other by tacle'. 4 g t V 'The accompanying drawing shows, by vay of example, the new method of vobtaining the receptacle for incendiary bombs, ar-

As will be seen in the drawing, the present receptacle for incendiary bombs has a receptacle a, of parallelepiped form, on to the external faces of which are soldered the semicylindrical shells b which are fixed so as to leave a small interval 0 between their longitudinal edges and to formyas has beenfstated above, a solid of revolution symmetrical on its transverse axis. w
This constructive arrangement forms thus two compartments: the central one a, of fusible or combustible material and containing the auto-.thermic mixture, the other (Z "surrounding the central compartment and containing an incendiary composition, such for example'as that which forms the subthe fusion of the central recepv plug (Z screwed into a ring a soldered onto the upper part of the shells b.
The lower part of these shells is likewise connected by a ring f into which is soldered a cover 9 closing in the base of the receptacle d.
The front ring 7 of the projectile thus constructed, receives, on the other hand, by screwing, the breech plug it which carries a fuse of any suitable type.
Two relay fire tubes 2' are arranged in the central compartment (1 and are filled with quick match wicks. Their lower ends open into the chamber h of the nose plug it by passing through the cover 9 soldered onto the ring The fire communicating openings 2" of these tubes i open at the level of vent holes in the central compartment a. 7

The bomb having been dropped from an aeroplane or a dirigible balloon, for example, and the fuse having acted, the quick match wicks contained in the relay fire tubes 2' instantaneously ignite and'mel t the fusible washers closing the vent holes 70.
The disappearance of these washers has as a result to permit the special thermite contained in the compartment or to burn in an open vessel. The combustion of this autothermic mixture, which takes place very rapidly, determines the fusion or the combustion of the said compartment a, sothat the shells I) become separated, andthe projectile is split longitudinally while the incendiary composition contained in the receptacle d is brought to a high temperature and ignited on the very target which it has struck. I
The method of construction above derectangular section, so as to form a certain interval between these longitudinal edges and to form a projectile affecting the form of a solid of revolution, symmetrical on its transverse axis and divided into distinct compartments: a central one, formed by the receptacle of rectangular section and intended to contain a suitable thermite, and the other, bounded by the two shells surrounding the first one and intended to contain an incendiary composition; the central compartment, constructed of material incapable of resisting the action of heat, being provided with vent holes which are formed by fusible washers and into which open the relay fire openings,the tubes of which, provided with quick 'match wicks, open on the other hand into' a chamber formed in the nose plug carrying the fuse, for the purpose of determining, by the action of the fuse, the instantaneous destruction 7 of the fusible washers closing the vent holes and the ignition of the auto-thermic mixture which burns in an open vessel, brings about the disappearance of the receptacle which conta'ins it and ignites the incendiary composition which :is' poured out upon the target struck in consequence of the opening of the two shells insulated from each other by the fusion of the central compartment.
