E. M. WALSH.
STAMP RECEIVER.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII PT.24.I918- 1 3 1 2,7 1 3 Patented Aug. 12, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
EDWARD MASON WALSH, OF MAINETTE, WASHINGTON.
STAMP-RECEIVER.
Application fil ed September 24, 1918. Serial No. 255,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MASON lVALsn, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Manette, in the county of Kitsap and State of Nashington, have invented a new and useful Stamp-Receiver, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide novel means whereby a. roll of stamps may be held on a guide through which the stamps are advanced as they are needed.
I do not confine myself to the specific form 7 shown and described, since within the scope of what is claimed, a mechanic might make changes, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a top plan wherein parts are broken away;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 denotes a guide having a longitudinal passage 2 adapted to receive a strip of stamps, one side of the guide being supplied with a slot 3 through which the strip of stamps may be advanced as required. It is not necessary to describe the guide 1 in detail, since a guide adapted for the purpose is shown in my Patent No. 1,261,077, issued to me on April 2, 1918, for sundry improvements in a stamp receiver. The capacity of the guide 1 is limited, and the present invention aims to provide a means whereby a roll of stamps of considerable length may be held in operative relation to the guide.
In carrying out the invention there is pro vided a loop-shaped body 4 which preferably is made of material which may be resilient. Metal or celluloid will answer the purpose. The body 4 terminates in approximately parallel arms 5 which may be secured in any desired way to one end of the guide 1. If desired, a slidable grip 6 may be mounted to reciprocate on the arms 5, the grip being held on the arms by stop flanges 7 which outstand from the ends of the arms. hen one end of the guide 1 is inserted between the arms 5, the grip 6 may be slid toward the flanges 7, thereby compressing the arms 5 and holding the body 4 on one end of the guide 1.
A retainer, in the form of a bar or plate 8, extends across one end of the loop-shaped body 4, the ends of the retainer being secured to opposite portions of the body. Intermediate its ends, the retainer may be supplied with an opening 9; The invention comprises a grip made from a single piece of metal, or other material, the piece being bent upon itself toform a double wall inner member 10 and an outer member 11 overhanging the inner member. The inner layer of the inner member 10 of the grip is extended to form an arm 12,. disposed at right angles to the shaft 14, disposed approximately parallel to the clamp. The shaft 14 may be constructed as desired, but preferably the constituent material of the shaft is bent transversely into trough shape, so as to strengthen the shaft and to enable the clamp, the arm 12 and the shaft to be made out of a single ,piece of relatively thin material. The edge of the loop-shaped body 4 is received between the members 10 and 11 on the clamp, the end of the shaft 14 being received in the opening 9 of the retainer 8, the shaft thus being held in place within the body 4. A roll 15 of stamps is laced on the shaft 14, the shaft and the 0 amp being assembled with the body 4, and the stamps in the roll 15 are slid, as required, through the longitudinal passage 2 in the guide 1, the thumb or finger of the operator being inserted into the slot 3, to secure an advancement of the stamps the stamps unreeling from the roll 15 as required. The construction of the device is such that it may be assembled readily with the guide 1, a relatively large quantity of stamps being always accessible for use in connection with the guide. It will be understood that as the stamps are advanced out of the guide 1, the stamp having been wet, may be applied readily to the letter or package, and be torn off across that end of the guide which is remote from the body 4.
The roll 15 of stamps is held on the shaft 14, for rotation, by the retainer 8 and the arm 12. The retainer 8 exercises two functions, in that it forms a support for one end of the shaft 14, and aids, also, in holding the roll 15 of stamps on the shaft.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a loop-shaped body terminating in approximately parallel arms; a guide having one of its ends inserted between the arms; a grip slidable on the arms and holding the arms on clamp, the'arm 12 being extended to form a provided at one end With an angularly'dis posed arm; and a clamp permanently connected with the arm, the clamp receiving one edge of the body removably.
3. In a device of the class described a loop-shaped body; a retainer carried by one end of the body; and an L-shaped member comprising a shaft having one of its ends detachably engaged With the retainer and an arm disposed at right angles to the shaft, the arm having means for detachably engaging the edge of the opposite end of the body.
4. In a device of the class described, a loop-shaped body; a retainer extended across one end of the body and provided with an opening; and a shaft having one of its ends mounted in the opening, the other end of the shaft being provided With an angularly disposed arm carrying a clamp engaging the opposite end of the body releasably.
5. In a device of the class described, a loop-shaped body including arms having terminal stop flanges; a grip slidable on the arms and retained thereon by the flanges; a shaft located Within the body; and means for connecting the shaft at one end With the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature I in the presence of two Witnesses.
ED'WARD MASON WALSH.
