ALFRED STRUBLE, OF FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED HOILAND, OF FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA.
MACHINE FOR TREATING SMUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED STRUBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fargo, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Machine for Treating Smut, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used for dipping vegetable products, such as p0- tatoes, wheat, barley or the like, to bring about the destruction of smut, scab, scale, etc., and one object of the invention is to provide a device of this sort which is so shaped that the dipping solution will be economized to the greatest possible degree, it being possible to dip a decreased amount of vegetables or the like, as the amount of solution decreases.
The invention aims to provide novel means for supporting the tank, and to improve the construction of the receptacle, which, being hinged to the tank, is raised and lowered during the dipping process.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation wherein parts are broken away; Fig. 2 is a top plan; Fig. 8 is a fragmental cross section.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a support including upwardly converging legs 1 connected by a lower frame including side bars 2 and end bars 3. The side bars 2 are parallel, whereas the end bars 3 converge upwardly, follow ing the upward slant of the legs 1. An upper frame is connected to the legs land includes side bars 4 and end bars The side bars 4 of the upper frame project horizontally :beyond the upper ends of the legs 1, and end bars 5 of the upper frame are located outwardly of the legs. The side bars i are parallel, but the end bars 5 converge inwardly and downwardly. One of the end bars 5 of the upper frame carries ears 6.
The invention comprises a triangular tank, preferably made of metal, the tank including side walls 8 and end walls 9. The side walls 8 of the tank 7 are parallel, the end walls 9 converging downwardly to an apex. The triangular tank 7 fits within the upper and lower frames of the support, the side walls 8 of the tank cooperating with the side bars 2 and 4, the end walls 9 of the tank engaging the inner surfaces of the end bars 5 of the upper frame, and engaging the upper edges of the end bars 3 of the lower frame. In this way, the triangular tank 7 is removab-ly mounted upon the sup port. However, the tank 7 may be supplied at its upper edge with an outstanding flange 10 engaging the upper edge of the upper frame, comprising the bars 4 and 5.
The invention comprises a triangular receptacle 11 adapted to fit closely within the triangular tank 7. The receptacle 11 includes side walls 12, and end walls 14: which converge downwardly. One of the end walls 14: of the receptacle 11 is provided with cars 15. A pivot bolt 16 passes through the cars 15 of the receptacle l1 and through the ears 6 011 the end 'bar 5 of the upper frame, the construction being such that the receptacle 11 may be swung in a verticalplan, into and out of the tank 7. The triangular receptacle 11 carries, at its upper edge, a reinforcing angle member 17, the horizontal flange of which overlies the flange 10 of the tank 7 and limits the downward movement of the receptacle within the tank. The angle member 7 carries, at that end of the receptacle which is remote from the pivot bolt 16, a handle 18, of any desired sort, whereby the receptacle may be swung upwardly and downwardly. Frames 19 are disposed within the receptacle 11 and rest on the end walls 1% of the receptacle, the frames having openings 20 bridged by closures 21, which may be made of wire netting or any other foraminous substance, the
closures being secured to the frame. In the end walls 14 of the receptacle 11 are fashioned openings 22 corresponding in size to the openings 20 in the removable frames 19. a
In practical pperation, a quantity of the grain or other material to be treated, is placed in the triangular receptacle 11, the receptacle being swung downwardly into the tank 7. The contents of the receptacle 11 thus will be dipped in the solution which the tank 7 contains, the solution entering the receptacle 11 through the foraminous closures 2 1 and effecting a thorough immersion of the contents of the receptacle 11. The receptacle 11 may be swung upwardly on the pivot bolt 16 by means of the handle 18, the contents of the receptacle being dumped out at the pivoted end of the receptacle.
Especial attention is directed to the fact that the tank 7 and the receptacle 11 are of triangular form. As a consequence, the amount of material placed in the receptacle 11 may be decreased, as the solution in the tank 7 is used up, and the dipping operation may be continued until there is no more than perhaps a pint or two of solution. left in the tank 7. The advantage incident to a the feature last above mentioned is obvious.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1- In a machine for dipping vegetable products, a tank in the form of a triangle having its apex downwardly disposed; a. receptacle fitting closely in the tank and in the form of a triangle having its apex downwardly disposed, the receptaclev including downwardly converging end walls having openings; frames within the receptacle and resting on the end walls of the receptacle, the frames having openings coinciding with the openings in the end walls of the re ceptacle; screens carried by the frames and bridging the openings in the frames; and means for mounting the receptacle for ver tical swing movement into and out of the tank. r
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
