GEORGE W. OORSON, OF PERRYSEURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'TREADLES FOR STAVE-JOINTERS. v
SI ecifieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,25 l, dated September 10, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GoRsoN, of Perrysburg, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Treadles for Stavo-Jointers, &c.; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being apart of this specification, in which- Figure l is' a perspective view of my improved treadle in the raised position, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, depressed.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
This invention relates to a compound treadleleverformortisingand stave-jointingmachines, and others of like character, in which the reciprocation of the working parts is effected by treadle or foot lever, and the object of which is to enable the operator to exert a greater power or force upon the knife or chisel without being obliged to employ a lever of such length as to remove him from a convenient distance from the work. The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement, with relation to the treadle proper, of a second treadle," pivoted at its rear end to a vibrating standard, its front end overlapping the rear end ofthe treadle proper, to which it is connected by a stirrup. The overlapping part of the second lever adds practically its length to the treadle proper, while it brings the operator its length nearer his work than if he used the treadle alone.
A in the drawing represents a treadle rigidly secured to a rock-shaft, B,journaled in two short standards, O, rising from the door. To the rock shaft are secured two cams, a, and chains b, for operating a stave-jointin g knife. The foregoing parts are substantially the same as are used in all similar machines for the purpose. At some distance to the rear of the operator, who would ordinarily stand with one foot at the end of the treadle A and facing the rockshaft and the table above it, (the latter not shown,) I pivot a vibrating standard, D, to the floor. To this standard I pivot a lever, E, which overlaps the rear end of the treadle LA, which supportsV it by a stirrup, c, in the manner shown. Above the front extremity of the lever E I pivot avibrating foot-plate, d, by which the operator may exert his power on the extremity of the lever E, and not where his heel would rest thereon, as is the case with treadles of the ordinary type. The use of this foot-plate, by not requiring him to bend his foot at the ankle, makes the operation much less fatiguing also, while the arrangement of the levers enables him 4to exert more force on the tool,` and yet bring him nearer his work, or the table on which it is done.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement, with relation to the treadlc A, of the vibratin g standard D, lever E, and stirrup c, or its equivalent, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE W. OORSON.
