Application filed March 24, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN TRAUB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Washtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Silo-Cleat; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to silo cleats and has for its object to provide a cleat adapted to be secured to the adjacent edges of the staves forming the silo, also to provide the cleat with eyes through which bands may pass, whereby the bands may extend around the silo for further bracing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cleat for securing the adjacent edges of the staves of a silo, said cleat being provided with rongs adapted to be embedded in the a jacent edges of the staves while the cleat is straight and means at the ends of the cleat whereby the ends may be secured to the staves, said securing action causing the cleat to bend and conform to the curvature of the silo and also causing the prongs to force the edges of the staves together as the cleat is bent.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may-be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a silo, showing the cleats applied thereto.

2 the staves forming the same. The edges of the staves abut each other and are secured in position by means of cleats 3. Each cleat {5 is formed from a strip of metal 4., which 1s normally straight, but adapted to be bent to conform to the curvature of the silo when the cleat is in position transversely of the adjacent edges of the staves. This bending of the strip 4 is accomplished by means of screws 5 which pass through apertures 6 at the ends of the strip. A centrally disposed elongated aperture 7 is provided and extending inwardly from the ends thereof are struck in prongs 8, which are adapted to be embedded in the adjacent edges of the staves when the strip is in a straight condition. After the prongs have been embedded the screws 5 are set up on, which setting up action will cause the strip 4 to bend until it conforms to the curvature of the silo, however the bending action will cause the ends of the prongs 8 to move toward each other, thereby forcing the edges of the staves into close engagement with each other so that the joint between the staves is watertight.
Each cleat is provided with eyes 9, through which a silo band 10 passes whereby the silo as a whole may be additionally braced. The ends of the bands may be secured together in any suitable manner as shown at 11.
It will also be seen that by forming an elongated aperture centrally of the strip 4, that the strip will easily bend when the screws are being set up on.
In Fig. 5 a strip is shown wherein the prongs 8 and elongated aperture have been eliminated. The operation of this form is the same as in the other form with the above exception.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A cleat for securing the adjacent edges of silo staves comprising a metallic strip, said strip being normally straight and having prongs spaced apart and substantially centrally. of the strip, said prongs being struck in from the ends of an elongated centrally disposed aperture, said aperture form ing means to allow the easy bending of the strip when the ends of the strip are forced into engagement with the staves to cause the strip to conform to the curvature of the silo, said bendin action causing the prongs When embed ed in the adjacent edges of the staves to a move toward each other thereby forcing the engaging edges of the staves into close engagement and eyes carried by the strip for the reception of a silo band.
