Description

FUEL INJECTING DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES. APPLICATION FILED IuLY 24. 1912'. IIIEIIEWED DEC. 4. Isls.
1,310,565. l Patented July 22, 1919 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- CARL GRN-"WALLS, E BREDE'NEY,
To all whom may concern.'
Be it known that CARL GRUNWALD, a citizen of the German Empire., residing at Bredeney., Germany, here invented certain new and usefui improvements in Foei-in jeoting; Devices for lrnterfnalomhustion i. gines, of which the oliowing is a specification.
internal eoznhnetion engines dwith fuel. injection using slowly igniting imei such ae tar oil, have the disadvantage, that the ignition Wili cease when the engine runs with light loafl. The reason for this is that with a light load, only a small quantity oi". fuel is injected, and that in consequence the 'fuel will he completely hiown away ron'i the atomizei', or more correctly, from the eircular space above the needle seat ancl that when the fuel valve is nait openecl, colfl Compressed air runs into the Working eylinder'ancl prevents the subsequent ignition ot the fuel, it on the other lia-nfl been found that the ignition occurs with eertainty9 when care is taken that at least a very small quantity oi fuel is present in the space directly above the. needle seat of the fuel miie. when the latter ogeneii.
ln order te attain thiS, and to Void the disadvantage iii-entionetl above7 t` eiiouhu space loont-eri. ahove the needle wilh in accor-lance with invention he hroi'lght momentarily in connection with the inside of the working cylinder before the raising` oi the needle which serves to introthieeI the iuel.
@ne embodiment of the intention is iilustratecl in the d av/ingy and:
Figure l shows longitudinal vertical section through aiuel valve anal a part of the Workingl o fiihcler;
Fig. 2 e top plan View of e ieolar d of gearing for the roei mire iliustrate Fig. l;
Fig. 3 a second embodiment corresponding to Fig. l fue?. iniecting; devie and Fig. Il fthe caro .g belonging to Fig. 37 as seen from the "t,
t of the invention shown in Figs. l and m'ill ist he fleserihed. A Valve cage A inserteil in the Cover M of the Working cylinder inoloses the fuel needle B which is governecl by the Cain clisk il by means or" a lover and are atomizing plates, D the ,nitoznizing cone. The pons E amil l? serve to provide the fuel and the atomizing compressed air.
l-esiie the usual fuel earn tooth nl on the loael is din'linisiiefl below a Certain iin'i'it Specification o! letters Eatent. emita 229 j jlf enefai ecenibei 2, i918. Serial No, 265,318.
5 to this invention, another small @am tooth 'n2 provided and placed in iront of tl e fuel Cain tooth nl counted e, direction of 'rotation indicated hy the arrow. This auxiliary Cain tooth causes a momentary raising' and closing of the. iioineedle preceding the opening of the imei valve. is now' the pr i nre in the Working ej-,iinier is less than tho pressure L1 o fuel valveIn diminishing oi' pressure will occur in the circular space G by ineens this n'iomontary raising oi" the iuel needle B anfi :i consequent advancement ot fuel supplied by the pump will taire piace in the nozzle, that at the second opening of the foei valve Cansecl hy the cam tooth 'f1/1, no colti Compressed air but fuel will he injected in the working eyiii'nier, so that e more eertain ignition assured.
i-lsV the danger oi the ceasing of the ignition onij7 when the engine runs under a sine-ll ioacl, the above described eon'tiol o the foei may therefore he arranged in such manner, that the auxiiiary @ein the tooth 'n2 only .comes into action .when
L (to about haii lo( C )g and that otherwise duration of the advanced openir 1f width oli the advanced opening ot :ne :titel needle will he increase@ with t l' n. e faimiiiishing loafli Such an arrangement of the two ein teeth n.1 and n on the diei: "l is shown in Eig. 2. As Will he seen in this figure, the main cani toot-h 'mi for the fuel supply is ahoot twice as Wide auxiliary cam tooth rhe auxiliary @am tooth 11.2 has furthermore two running; suifaoes oi' cliierent height Whieh are connectedv with. each other and with the oirfizumiforential gmiiaee ofthe @am through inclined surfaces. The earn disk "i is in usual manner aiaily tlispiaoeahle on tile shaft E hy ineens fl or groove and lieu' and can he adp three different positions (i ll. AQi) hy means of the adjusting lever S. lil/ien the engine is under full load, the lever S oceu-l pies the position l. lThe @am disk will then .take the position relative to the lever lj shown in Fig. 2 so that the gear roller p1 will cooperate with the fuel Cain tooth nl;
ted in- Should the load of the machine now he diminished to about half load, Jthe adjusting iever will he transferred to the middle. position ll. is a consequence the lower part o 'the auxiliary Cain tooth n will then arrive in the path oi the gear rollen .An advanced opening of the fuel valve will then take place before the main injecting of the fuel. Lastly when the engine runs empty the adjusting lever I would be brought into the position III whereby the high p art of the auxiliary cam tooth n2 will come into action and a greater advanced opening of the fuel valve will be the lconsequence.
The position of the auxiliary cam "tooth n2 on the cam disk N has to be found by experiment.
The,difl`erence between the embodiment represented in Figs. 3 and 4, fromthe described embodiment consists particularly therein that the connection of the circular space G with the working cylinder is not made through the. fuel nozzle but rather through a separately geared lby-pass K. The opening of this by-pass and the closing thereof, is here actuated by means of the auxiliary needle valve L which is also operated by the cam disk N by means of a second lifting lever T situated in advance of the lever P. For this purpose a Isecond cam tooth n2 is provided besides the-normal fuel cam tooth nl on the cam disk N, and this second cam tooth is situated in advance of the'fuel cam tooth 11,1 in the revolving direction indicated by the arrow. This second cam tooth n2, in this case, is not located in the same plane as the cam tooth 'nl but instead in the plan of the gear lever T which belongs thereto (see Fig. 4r). This auxiliary camtooth n2 acts in such a manner on the needle of the auxiliary valve L that a mo- 'Inentary connection between the circular space G andthe cylinder is established through the short raising and lowering in advance of the opening of the fuel valve, and that thereby a diminishing of pressure in the circular space will take place; The
action of this on the fuel is the same as in the previously described embodiment.
