Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may' concern:
Be it known that I, OTHo W. S'rILEs, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved caps or attachments for pens and pencils, and is particularly adaptable to fountain pens; its
prima object being to house in the removable tu ular cap of a pen or pencil means for holdin an eraser, blade, pencil or other device, an to provide a spring pocket clip having connections therewith, whereby said erasing or other device may be readily thrust out through the end of said cap, or withdrawn therein, and locked automatically in position.
Further objects 0f the present invention are to produce an improved locking arrangement combined with and capable of convenient manipulation by an effective form of springi clip for clasping the hemmed edge of a poc et; to provide for interchanging and renewing the various types of erasers, blades or pencils, which may be employed; to adapt the device to either a removable or fixed tubular cap, or to a tubular extension integral with a penholder or pencil; and to make the improvements readily applicable to existing forms of writing instruments.
' Minor objects will become apparent from the following description of preferred forms embodyin my invention, reference being had to t e accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fountainpen with my invention applied thereto.

Fig. 7 is a frontal view similar to Fig. 3, being partly broken away to show a steel blade substituted for the wire eraser shown in the latter figure.
Fi 8 is a side view, partly in section, showlng the improvements applied to an integral extension of a pencil casing for adjustable leads.
The reference letter a indicates the barrel of a fountain-pen; or the shaft ofa pencil or penholder as in Fig. 8, may be substituted therefor; is the pen-point; and c designates as an entirety the cap used to cover and protect the pen or pencil point, which is also tted to receive and engage the tapered upper end of the barrel a, in the usual or any suitable way. The cap c has a tubular body or shell d provided with a narrow slot e extending longitudinally a considerable distance from its upper end; and said upper end is interiorly slightly beveled or countersunk and eXteriOrly reduced in diameter and screw-threaded to a shoulder, as shown at f. A removable internally threaded end closure g, is fitted to be screwed on the terminal threads of the tubular shell d, and abut against the shoulder f. Said closure q has also a circular oove formed in it with a beveled edge L asripted to engage the countersunk end of the shell d to maintain the tubular form of the latter; and a central aperture i, preferably of rectangular form, as shown in Fig. 4, is provided in the closure g to permit the passage therethrough of erasing or other means hereinafter described.
A cylindrical body or plunger j is slidably fitted to reci rocate within the tubular shell d, and has ormed in its upper end a central tap ed out bore ada ted to receive and hold t e screw-threade shank 7c of a blade, eraser, pencil, or other device designated generically by the reference letter Z. The cap c and plunger y' may be of hard rubber, metal, or any suitable material, but the shank la should be metallic, as also are the casings of the erasers l shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 8, and the steel blade Z of Fig. 7.
In Figs. 2, 3 and 4 is shown at Z a form of the well known wire brush eraser, being a fagot of small tempered steel wires m secured at one end in a tubular holder n telescoped into an outer tube o, and held in position b a clamping screw p slidable throughout a on 'tudinal slot g in the tube o. It is obvious t at an eraser of rubber or composition material may be substituted for the fagot m in the same or an analogous arrangement such as indicated in Fig. 8. In Fig. 7 a steel blade for erasing or cutting is shown at Z; or a small lead pencil may be substituted; and these various forms of l may be 'l position2 as shown by the dotted lines and,A
readily interchanged after removing the end closure A flat metal leafspring s with a U-shaped bend has its inner leg provided with lateral ears n and concaved to fit the curvature of c, being disposed longitudinally the ci?) there() and secured to the plunger y' by suitable means such as a screw t which may slide in the cap slot e. The outer leg of the spring s is sprung back against the cap c, at a point below the termination of the inner leg and has its end slightly bent outward an shaped as at u to form a spring clip ada ted to slip over and clamp the hem of a poc et against the cap c.
A dee rectangular groove or indentation 'u is cut aterally across the plunger j near its lower end; and a lock-bolt head w is slidably fitted therein, being rovided with a stem y slidable in the cap s ot e. The stem y projects outward through an aperture e in the inner leg of the spring 8, and its termination is secured by riveting or otherwise to the outer leg of the spring s about midway of the length of the latter, as shown at 2. The .bolt head w is rectangular, except as to its outer face which is curved concentrically with the plunger A plurality oit' pairs of recesses 3 are su in the interior surface of the tube d athwart the slot e and each pair is adapted to receive the outer end of the bolt head Iw so as to prevent movement of the plunger j. Only two pairs of locking sockets or recesses 3 are shown herein, but it is evident that more may be provided if desired.
While I prefer to incorporate the .device with a removable cap c in all cases, yet it may be desired to embody the invention, as shown in Fig. 8, with an extension d of the shaft or barrel a of a pencil or pen. This construction is best adapted to pencils for holding and adjusting a bare lead 4, as shown; and the arrangement, is similar in other respects to that a'bove described.
It should now be apparent that the erasing or other device Zis normally housed within the tube d, being locked therein because of the retention by the spring s of the bolt-head fw in engagement with the lower pair of registering recesses 3; and springing the clip u over the hem of a pocket locksrthe said parts together even more rigidly. The device is quickly and conveniently made ready for use, however, ay slight pressure of the o erators thumb upon the outer leg of t e sprin s in the vicinity of the point 2 serves to re ease the head fw from the sockets 3, Whereu on a forward thrust of the thumb slides t e said spring, together with the plunger j and its device Z, to the operative arrows 1n Fig. 2. In this position for use the device Z projects outside of and is steadied by the walls of the capaperture i,
and releasing the thumb pressure permits the head w to spring outward into the u per pair of sockets 3, or into any other pair of such. sockets that ma be provided, which prevents both longitu inail and rotary movement of the device Z.
Substantially the same simple operation with a Withdrawal of the thumb returns the device Z and locks it within the tube d.
I further point out and distinctly' claim as my invention z- 1. In a device of the class described, a tube having a longitudinal lslot therein, a toolholding plunger slidable in said tube, a spring rigidly connected through said slot with said plunger and ada ,ted to ride on the exterior of said tube, an means operative by said spring for locking said plunger to said tube.
2. In a device of the class described, a tube having a longitudinal slot therein, a tool-holding plun er slidable in said tube, a spring member located exteriorly of said tube and rigidly secured to said plunger by a connection slidable in said slot, a bent part of said spring member terminatin in a pocket clip, and means whereby the ent part of said spring member operates normally to lock said plunger to said tube.
3. In a device of the class described, a tube having a longitudinal slot therein, a tool-holdin plun er slidablein said tube and provi ed with a groovel formed laterally across it, a spring poeket clip member adapted to ride on the outside ofsaid tube, said member being securedl to said plunger by connecting means assingthrough said slot, and means slidab e in said groove and operatively connected with said pocket clip member for locking sald plunger to said tube.
4. In a device of the classl described, a tube havin a longitudinal slot therein, a plunger sli ablin said ,tube provided with means for holding tool, a bent spri having its inner leg a apted to ride on t e eX- terior of saidtube and, rigidly connected throughsaid slot with `said plunger, the outer leg of said spring ,overhanging the end of its innerleg and terminating Ain contact with said tube, and means operatively connected with the outer leg o said spring for lookin said lunger to sai tube.
5. Tie com ination with a writing yinstrument, of a tubular capthereforrovided `with a longitudinal slot, a top ,-,holding plunger slidable in said, cap iand, aving a recessV in its side, a spring located eXteriorly of said cap and rigidly connected ,through said slot with saidplunger, a bent part of said .springh termmating-inlja ,pocket clip bearing a ainst said capa lookin member fitted to side in the I'QWSSD; Sil plunger, and connecting means whereby said locklng member is normallymheldt in engagement with said cap by the resilient force of the bent part of said spring.
6. The combination with a Writing instrument, of a tubular cap therefor having a longitudinal slot therein and provided With a plurality of interior sockets disposed in pairs on opposite sides of said slot, a toolholding plunger adapted to reciprocate in said cap and having a parallel-Walled recess in its side, a spring located exteriorly of said cap and rigidly connected through said slot With said plunger, a bent over part of said spring terminating in a pocket clip bearing against said cap, a locking bolt havin its head fitted to slide in the recess in said plun r and engage the interior sockets of sai cap, and a stem of said locking bolt leading out through the slot in said cap and terminally secured to the bent over part of said spring.
