To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN J. KELLUM and lVILLIAM E. HEIDDLESTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Red Lodge, in the county of Carbon and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emergency-Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an emergency brake, and has for its object the improvement of the construction of a brake that is very efficient in operation for preventing an accident on a hill or a mountain grade should the ordinary brakes refuse to work or operate satisfactorily for preventing the car from backing down the hill or grade or over the side of an embankment.
With this and other objects inview, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as. will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the-hub of a wheel, which is secured to the axle 2. The roller-carrying plate 3 dium of bolts 4, to the hub 1 of the wheel,
and 1n the receiving pockets 5 of the rollercarrying plate 3 are positioned rollers 6.
The pockets 5 are provided with an inclined bottom 5 that produces a cam-like surface over which each roller 6 travels, so that when the wheel of which the hub 1 is a part, is rotating forwardly, the rollers 6 will rest in the largest part of each pocket 5 (Fig. 2), thereby not locking the wheel upon the axle 2 when the wheel is moving forwardly. is fixedly secured, through the me-- the direction of the arrow (Fig. 2), this will cause the loose socketed ring 7 to rotate sufficiently to cause the rollers 6 to ride forwardly on the inclined faces fi of the pockets 5, thereby locking the ring 7 rigidly upon the axle 2 and permitting the inner ends of levers 8 to drop in notches or sockets 9 formed in the loose ring 7.
Each lever 8 is provided with an elongated slot 10, and through slot 10 extends' its ends (Fig. 2), and intermediate its ends,
is an auxiliary lug 19. A pair of yieldable lever-supporting bars 20 are attached, at their inner ends, at 21, to the auxiliary lug 19 of the brake ring 17, and the outer ends of these lever-carrying bars are pivotally connected, at 22, to the primary lugs 18. Each lever-carrying bar is provided inter mediate its ends with a plurality of lugs 23, to each of which lugs 28 is pivotally attached, at its inner end 24, a pivoted lever 8.
Upon the inner'ends of levers 8, riding into the sockets or notches of the loose ring 7, after said ring, through the medium of said rollers 6 binding in pockets 5, have locked ring 7 upon axle 2, the levers 8 will jam or force the lever-carrying bars 20 outwardly, thereby jamming or braking the split brake rim 17 against the inner face of the brake drum or casing 14, thereby securely fastening the rear wheels against rotary movement backwardly down a grade or hill, even though the emergency brake lug 25' (Fig. 2) and its cooperating parts fail to work.
In case it is desired to back the automobile, this is provided for byconnecting rod 27 in any suitable manner with the transwith a plunger head 28, and plunger head 28 is positioned in the plunger .pasing 29,
' and plunger casing 29' is secured to the rod to not lock the rear wheels against backward movement. It is to be noted that the brake drum or casing 14 is provided with an elongated slot 34, in which works the extension 33 that is connected directly to the lever guiding ring 12. Each lever 8 extends through a slot 35, in the guiding ring 12 (Fig. 3). I
A coil spring'36 is attached to the lever guiding ring, at 37, and its opposite end is attached, at 38, to the auxiliary lug 19 of the brake ring 17. This spring 36 serves to cause the levers 8 to ride quickly into the notches 9 when the split ring 7 is looked upon plate 3 bythe action of the rollers 6.
We claim 1. In a mechanism-of the class described, the combination with an axle, of a rollercarrying plate positioned upon said axle, a hub secured to said axle, said plate fixedly secured to said hub, said plate provided with roller-receivingpockets, rollers in said pockets, a loose ring provided with notches engaging said rollers and adapted tobe locked against rotary movement upon said plate by said rollers, a brake drum secured upon said axle, a split brake ring in said drum, said brake ring provided with lugs at its ends and a lug intermediate its ends, lever-carrying bars pivotally connected to said lugs of said brake ring, a rotatably mounted lever guiding ring surrounding said loosely mounted notched ring, and levers engaging said loosely mounted guiding ring and pivotally connected at one end to said levercarrying bar and being adapted to enter said notches on said loosely mounted ring for expanding said brake ring for locking the brake drum against rotary movement in one direction, when the braking actionoccurs causing the axle, roller-carrying plate, rollers and loose ring to be locked against independent rotary movement.
2. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a Wheel structure having an axle attached thereto, a brake drum carried by said axle, of a roller-carrying plate secured to said wheel structure, and means including pivotally mounted levers cooperating with said roller-carrying plate and said brake drum for locking the brake drum and plate and Wheel structure against independent rotary movement and also against rotary movement in one direction.
3. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a wheel structure provided With a roller-carrying plate, an axle nected at their ends upon said split.ring,
levers pivotally connected at theirinnei' ends to said bars, guiding means connected to all of said levers, a loosely mounted notched ring surrounding said roller-carrying plate and adapted to receive said levers in its notches, and rollers interposed between said plate and said loosely mounted ring.
4. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a hub structure having an axle attached thereto, of a brake drum carried by said .axle, a slotted guiding ring supported within said brake drum, levers extending through the slots of said ring, 'means attached to said levers on the outside of said ring and being adapted to bind against the brake drum, and means carried by the axle and hub structure for en'- gaging the inner ends of said levers within said guiding ring for actuating the levers for causing said binding action upon the brake drum when said hub structure accidentally rotates in one direction.
5. In a mechanism of the class described,
the combination with a hub structure provided with an axle, of a brake drum carried by said axle, means including a guiding ring for locking said hub structure against independent movement with respect to said brake drum, an extension carried'by said guiding ring, said brake drum provided with an elongated slot through which said extension projects, a link connected to said extension outside of said drum, and a transmission controlled rod and plunger device pivotally connected-to said first-mentioned rod for automatically controlling the operation 3f" said locking means within the brake rum.
6. In a mechanism of the class described,
brake drum, a slotted guiding ring slidably mounted upon said brackets, said levers extending through said slots of said guiding ring, means extending through the slots of the levers and through the slots of said guiding ring for slidably connecting said levers and gu1ding ring, and means carried by said 1,soe,e45 v a hub structure and cooperating with the inner ends of said levers for operably engaging said levers for causing the same to be forced outwardly upon said guiding ring for expanding said carrying bars and thereby expanding said brake ring'against the brake drum for locking said drum against independent movement With respect to said hub structure.
