IMPRQVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,990, dated September 3, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Pruning-Shears, invented by lVIANAS- SEH GBOVER, of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio.
The nature and object of my invention relates to the mode of construction of the jawlever of the said prunin g-shears in such a manner as to diminish the expense of construction and enhance their strength and durability, and materially diminish the liability to become deranged or out of order; but to accomplish these results the jaw-lever is cast of malleable castiron or any other suitable material, and is cast with a pivot, and rivet, and lapshoulder, and arranged and operated in combination with the blade-lever and guide-cap. The obj eet of the pivot is to fasten the jaw-lever to the bladelever in the manner of a pair of shears, and also fastens the forward end of the guide-cap onto the blade-lever, and stands permanent with the jaw-lever without liability to become loose and vibrating, and is cheaper than the common bolt-pivot, and also obviates the necessity of making a hole in the jaw-lever for said pivot, thereby avoiding that great weakening of the jaw-lever and facilitates the construction and enhances the permanency of the pruning-shears; and the rivet, being cast with is an edge view of the pruning-shears shut.
A is the jaw-lever, cast of malleable castiron or any other suitable material, and is cast with the pivot B, and the rivet C, and the lap shoulder F, and arranged and operating in combination with the blade-lever E and guidecap D. B is the pivot, extending through the blade-lever E and guide-cap D, which fastens the said blade'lever to the jaw-lever A in the manner of a pair of shears. U is the rivet that rivets the rear end of the guide-cap D onto the shank end of the jaw-lever A. D is the guide-cap that acts as a rivet-cap to the pivot also as a guide that guides the blade-lever E"\ in such a manner as to diminish the liability of the blade L from looking with or cutting into the jaw H. F is the lap-shoulder, which prevents the handles from coming in contact with the hands of the operator, and also raises the shank end of the jaw-leverA on a plane with the blade-lever E, which forms a plane surface for the guide-cap D to rest on, thereby requiring the that side of the guide-cap to be straight, which facilitates its construction and enhances its durability.
What I claim as a new article of manufacture and as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The cast ja'w-lever A with the cast pivot B, and with the cast rivet O, and with the lapshoulder F, operating in combination with the blade-lever E and the guide-cap D. all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
MANASSEH GROVER.
